I was furious. After I had told him not to reveal this information, that Fat Man immediately sold me out. I could have kicked him to death. I turned around and saw that Fatty had already vanished without a trace.
I said to Xiao Ting, "Wait a moment, I'll call you later."
If I didn't vent my anger at Fatty, I would go crazy. When I stepped outside, I saw Fatty in the bedroom showing off to Da Zhang, looking so pleased with himself as if he had already won over Xiao Ting.
I pointed at Fatty and asked, "What did you tell Xiao Ting? Didn't I tell you not to mention this? Are you trying to get her killed?"
Fatty looked confused. "I didn't say anything; are you mixed up?"
"She already knows about Ah Xiang going to Guizhou, and you're still trying to deny it."
"Ah Xiang going to Guizhou to buy Arms is a different matter. I know that someone who has information about Xiao Guolin went to Guizhou, but there’s no weapon deal involved. There's no need to hide this from Miss Ren."
"How can there be no need? If she finds out, the moment she meets Ah Xiang, the truth will come out, and we won't be able to keep it under wraps anymore."
"Then just keep her away; do you really have to let them meet?"
"How do I keep her away? We're in Laos." At that moment, it hit me— Fatty had set me up. Although he hadn't revealed the information about Xiao Guolin buying Arms, he had let Xiao Ting know about Ah Xiang entering Beipanjiang Town. Knowing Xiao Ting's personality, she would definitely seek out Ah Xiang, and all the secrets would be laid bare before her. Fatty was forcing me to return home—and quickly—before Xiao Ting took any action.
"Do you have any principles? You forget who you are when you see a pretty girl." I shouted angrily, "Will I ever dare to work with you again?"
"This has nothing to do with principles. I didn’t say anything inappropriate; what do you want me to do? Keep everything from her?" Fatty replied defiantly.
But even Fatty had some self-awareness. Furious, I slammed the door and returned to the living room. No matter how unwilling I was, I had to hurry back home; I absolutely couldn't let Xiao Ting and Ah Xiang come into contact.
I immediately dialed Jack's number. "I'm heading back home right away. Wait for us in Ban Gui Township; don't let Xiao Ting act alone. I might need to go to Beipanjiang Town first and then head straight to Ban Gui Township to meet up with you. If you have any leads on Cao Mingzhe, try to wait for me before taking action. If the situation is urgent and you can't wait for me, leave me information about your movements so that I can find you."
Jack said, "No problem. I'll try to wait for you before taking action. Is it dangerous for you to go to Beipanjiang Town? If not, come to Ban Gui Township first, and we can plan our next steps."
I calculated the time. "There's no time. Even if I hurry over now, it will be a bit late. We originally agreed to meet at five. If I leave now, I'll still be late, so let's stick to my plan. Stay in touch. I'll talk to Xiao Ting for a moment."
Soon, Xiao Ting's voice came through the phone: "Don't blame Song Gang for this. You and Jack have kept everything from me. Only Song Gang is honest enough to tell me the truth; there's a big difference between a person's appearance and their inner self."
How did she know I was blaming Fatty? Listening to Xiao Ting made me feel uneasy. I was genuinely concerned for her safety, but instead of gratitude, I received blame. Meanwhile, Fatty, who was only thinking about digging up graves for profit and dragging her down with him, was seen as the good guy. I felt like crying without tears.
"I didn't mean to hide anything from you; I just didn't want to distract you." I thought it best to explain myself to avoid misunderstandings and preserve my image in her eyes. "I've decided to go back and follow that lead. You and Jack wait for me in Ban Gui Township; I'll come as soon as I get the information."
After hanging up, I pushed open the bedroom door. "I've decided to return home and meet with Ah Xiang and the others. However, someone needs to stay here and keep an eye on Wu Qitai. As for Jackal, we need to know when he comes back; if they make any big moves, Jackal should return to take command."
Fatty pointed at Da Zhang: "He'll stay here to continue monitoring while we head back."
I thought for a moment. "Alright then. Let's set off immediately; time is already tight. Da Zhang, be careful and don't expose yourself. You're alone here, and if something happens, no one can help you."
Da Zhang smiled innocently. "No problem; this is my line of work, so there won't be any issues."
It's actually quite close from Lang Nam Tower to the Chinese border; if we took the highway, we'd reach China in two or three hours. However, Fatty and I couldn't cross through the official port; we chose a path that would allow us to cross after dark. By the time we arrived at a village within China that had roads, it was already past two in the morning. We caught a passing truck and quickly reached Mengla, where we boarded a bus heading to Xishuangbanna. Once we got to Xishuangbanna, it would be easier since transportation there is convenient; we could choose between road or rail depending on which was faster.
Stepping onto Chinese soil gave me a sense of security.
In Xishuangbanna, Fatty insisted on taking a long-distance bus, which led to an argument between us. Taking the bus not only wasted time but was also uncomfortable; there was no freedom like on a train. Seeing Fatty's stubborn attitude made me suddenly think of a possibility—he wouldn't be trying to smuggle prohibited items across the border, would he? The train station has security checks.
When we left our hotel in Laos, each of us carried a backpack. Since we were walking across the border, we brought some essentials like ropes, rain covers, instant food, and even a machete for clearing paths. However, both of us had outdoor survival experience and knew what items were necessary; after briefly checking our backpacks and confirming there were no major oversights, we set off. After crossing the border, we discarded some unnecessary items like the machete and rain cover because no one wanted to carry useless burdens while trekking through the mountains. Fatty's backpack also had some reductions but not as drastic as mine; mine was almost empty—if it weren't for a few changes of clothes, I would have wanted to throw my backpack away entirely.
On the bustling streets of Xishuangbanna, we stood beneath a coconut tree. I anxiously asked Fatty, "What do you have in your bag that's so secretive?"
Fatty smiled nonchalantly, "Actually, it's nothing much. Just a little personal collection, nothing to worry about."
The more he said that, the more uneasy I felt. I needed to get to the bottom of this; I couldn't afford to be caught off guard. My expression turned serious as I insisted, "What exactly is it? Don't try to hide it from me."
Fatty awkwardly chuckled and glanced at the two Police Officers not far away. "It's that 16. I just can't bring myself to throw it away."
I felt my face turn pale. Turning slightly, I positioned myself away from the two Police Officers. The sun beat down on me, and I felt no warmth at all. My head began to spin, and I extended an arm to lean against the coconut tree; otherwise, my weak legs wouldn't be able to support my body.
After a while, I regained my composure. "Let's take a car," I said weakly.
