Jack delivered a harsh blow to my newly established strength in spatial imagination, leaving me to wonder if his words were meant to undermine me.
"Imagination and spatial imagination are not entirely the same thing. Although both abilities are among humanity's greatest and most valuable," Jack explained, seemingly trying to alleviate my frustration and embarrassment.
"From the perspective of that civilization, which could only send a limited volume of things to Earth, the portal they built—oh, no, that's your term; we refer to it as the Spatial Channel. The Spatial Channel they established is not perfect; it has transmission capabilities but cannot transport large quantities or massive objects.
We believe that civilization is working on improving and strengthening the Spatial Channel. The Energy Matrix is the most obvious evidence of this. The Energy Matrix can gather energy, but after countless years, where has all that massive energy gone?
Of course, maintaining the Spatial Channel requires energy, but is the energy gathered by the Energy Matrix solely for sustaining its operation? That remains an unknown we need to clarify further.
However, we don't see it that way. We believe that the energy gathered by the Energy Matrix is being used to enhance the Spatial Channel. If this Spatial Channel is perfected and strengthened to a certain extent, allowing for the mass transportation of extraterrestrial civilizations to Earth, we do not consider that a good thing.
Zhang, do you understand what I mean?"
"Whose creation is the Energy Matrix? According to your theory, if the Energy Matrix provides energy for the Spatial Channel—whether it's for strengthening or stabilizing its operation—it must have appeared after the Spatial Channel. Who has the capability and willingness to construct the Energy Matrix? If an alien civilization possesses this ability, their Spatial Channel should be powerful enough to transport countless lives and items at once."
"Of course, it's the Robor People. I think extraterrestrial civilizations may not necessarily have the ability to transport large life forms. From our discovered extraterrestrial life samples, there are no large biological specimens—only microbial and plant samples. While they may lack the capacity to send their main bodies here, they can transmit their technology and even create miracles among the ancient Lop Nur inhabitants. It wouldn't be difficult for them to manipulate a group of lower-intelligence beings they see as sheep."
"What about Awakeners? What’s the nature of awakening abilities? Is it merely about unlocking potential? What about my awakening ability? Delayed strike effect? You know, when I fought with Liu Squad Leader, our injuries were basically identical. I didn’t gain much advantage, nor did he suffer greatly. Yet half a month later, I was fine while he was left limping."
"Alright, I admit this is a perplexing issue for us. Logically speaking, if extraterrestrial civilizations had ill intentions toward Earth’s civilization, they wouldn’t create a batch of superhumans to oppose them. From what we know so far, these Awakeners have not lost their self-awareness; they are not puppets for them to command at will.
We believe it’s most likely an unintended side effect of the Spatial Channel—definitely not something intended by the alien civilization. Of course, this needs confirmation.
So this time accompanying me to Lop Nur is a renowned physicist from Europe; these mysteries await his determination. You should know him; he collaborated with Hawking on a physics project."
"It seems you’ve invested heavily in this Lop Nur expedition by bringing in such a famous physicist."
"Inviting him was free; he isn’t a member of AE. For an authority on spatial physics, witnessing a spatial transmission channel firsthand is something he dreams of. He would willingly invest everything he has just for that opportunity."
"Then I can assure you he won't leave disappointed."
"Yes, I think so too. But, Zhang, have you thought about the final outcome of this matter? Do you understand what I mean?"
This was the second time Jack asked me that question. Do you understand what I mean?
Of course, I understood. I had grasped it the first time he asked. He was equally aware of the dangers posed by extraterrestrial civilizations. I just wasn't sure if he was being sincere. His words were subtle and cautious, and so were mine.
It was time to make a choice; one of us had to take the initiative to clarify this matter.
I picked up the glass on the bar and took a big gulp, wiping my mouth afterward. "I want to destroy it."
Jack was momentarily stunned. Clearly, my more radical stance shocked him.
I waited tensely for about ten seconds. I was really nervous; if his words were a test or a trap for me, then I was doomed. Not only would the plan completely fall apart, but my life would also be spent in darkness. The military had been waiting to catch me off guard, and it wouldn’t take long.
"Don't you need to be certain? If it's not very dangerous to Earth civilization or is within controllable limits, isn't this approach a bit extreme?"
"Regardless of whether they are benevolent or malevolent, the greatest benefit for human civilization is to elevate its own level of civilization. If it’s the opposite, human civilization will be destroyed as a result. I think you realize this point as well; that civilization can establish a Spatial Channel connecting the two civilizations on Earth shows that their level of civilization is far superior to ours. If they are hostile, Earth civilization might not even have the chance to perish together with them."
This was using everything we had as chips to gamble on something trivial. I refused. I didn't want to struggle in regret and despair; rather than regretting later, it was better to act boldly now, even if the outcome didn't differ much. Jack, how confident do you think we are in destroying the Eternal Gate?
Jack pondered for a moment and nodded. "If it's just you and me who know about it, there's a one percent chance of success; if a third person knows, it's zero. There’s no chance of success at all."
I understood Jack's point; as soon as the news of my intention to destroy the Eternal Gate leaked out, there would be no chance of success. There should be no opportunity!
"Jack, I need you to state your position."
"I support you."
"Thank you. But there's some bad news: there are more people who know about my plan than just you and me."
"Is it Fatty? That’s fine; mine is if a third person knows. He is not human."
If it were someone else acting like this in front of me, I would definitely confront them, and a slap wouldn't be out of the question. But with Jack, I couldn't even bring myself to argue. Back in the Underground Cavern, I even cursed Fatty in front of Jack; for a while, we were on the same side.
"Cough, there's one more person who knows about this. It's not clear, but he definitely knows."
"Who?"
"Vietnamese A San."
Jack frowned and glanced around. "Where is he?"
"Laos. He’s handling some matters for me."
