I gritted my teeth and threw the Molotov cocktail.
The entrance was too close; I couldn't throw it with much force. I also couldn't throw it too high, as we barely had time to wait for the cocktail to explode above us, scattering the Phosphorus Fire that could drive away the mosquitoes.
With a loud bang, the Molotov cocktail exploded almost right in front of my eyes. Although the Phosphorus Fire didn't splash onto me, the bright light from the explosion blinded me momentarily.
This wasn't too bad; not being able to see would keep my fear at bay. Relying on my memory, I took a deep breath and charged toward the entrance. In my ears, apart from the sound of the wind and the crackling of burning mosquitoes, there were various shouts.
There were Jack and Xiao Ting guiding me with their voices, encouraging shouts from the warriors for Liu Squad Leader, and behind me, I could hear Liu Squad Leader's agonizing screams.
The moment I burst into the entrance, my vision began to clear slightly, and I could see and feel someone trying to put out the fire on me. Fortunately, I had made it through without being roasted alive.
I could still hear Liu Squad Leader's howls in my ears. Squinting hard, I saw that he had been severely burned and flames were still flickering on his body.
I got up and walked over to him, seeing Jack using a dagger to carve flesh from his back. Each piece of meat contained blackened remnants of burning material. Jack discarded the pieces onto the ground, where they continued to burn fiercely.
The entrance was now sealed off by White Phosphorus Residue, and everyone was watching this horrifying scene unfold. A San's lip trembled uncontrollably; he seemed quite frightened.
"Is there any hope?" I gently asked Jack.
"There is! There is hope!" Liu Squad Leader lay on the ground, his neck twisted back in an exaggerated manner.
I couldn't see his expression clearly, but from his urgent tone, I could tell he was worried about being abandoned. It seemed his mind was still sharp; in this environment, my survival skills were stronger than his or those of his warriors. Being with me gave him a greater chance of survival.
My eyes were still struggling; the bright light made everything appear double. Witnessing this bloody scene also meant enduring double the psychological pressure.
I turned around to check my injuries. The bruises on my knee and shoulder weren't as severe as I had imagined; there were no fractures or tendon strains, just a few swollen spots. It seemed that the distance I had rushed through had spared me. The White Phosphorus Fireworks seemed particularly fond of me, as they all veered away and headed straight for Liu Squad Leader.
I felt uneasy and said to Xiao Ting, "Take a look for me, see if there's a hole burned in my back. We can't leave any hidden flames."
"Please, I already checked. Your clothes don't even have a tear. Lucky that Liu Squad Leader took the hit for you; otherwise, you'd be in the same boat."
I shot Xiao Ting a glare; she was truly a piece of work, always siding with the traitor.
"Brother Qiang, let me check you."
A San leaned in to examine my back closely.
He was thorough in his inspection, pulling off my outer jacket and shirt, which made me uncomfortable.
"Hey, are you checking for injuries or just taking advantage of me? Do you have to strip me down to see anything?"
Xiao Ting stood beside me, and Tang Yumo was watching from a short distance away. A San was stripping me in front of two beautiful women. Of course, I wasn't pleased.
A San chuckled. "It's just for safety's sake. Alright, Brother Qiang, you're completely fine."
As I put my jacket back on, I glanced at the short coat; there were a few small holes burned into the shoulders and sleeves, but they weren't deep and hadn't burned through. It seemed like there was some kind of fireproof material inside.
I couldn't help but cast a sympathetic glance at Liu Squad Leader. He was wearing the same fireproof coat, yet his back was severely burned; how much White Phosphorus Residue had fallen on him? Thankfully, he was wearing a helmet; otherwise, when I charged into the White Phosphorus Flames right after the incendiary shell exploded, he would have been done for.
"Report on the injured!" I shouted to those around me as I put on my outerwear.
"A-Yong can still hold on. But his combat effectiveness has taken a hit. His leg seems to have some issues," Tang Yumo replied first.
Four people came down in total. The Listener had me deal with Fatty's group, while Radar Man met his end in the wreckage of the Landing Craft. One of the remaining two was also injured. This left me feeling helpless and sorrowful for them.
I really couldn't understand what they were thinking. Was Dequantize really that important? Was it worth risking their lives?
I furrowed my brow and looked at Tang Yumo, asking, "What about you? Are you okay?"
The frown was due to the fact that I still had to squint to see clearly. The question was out of politeness and habit. I noticed Tang Yumo's graceful landing from mid-air, which assured me that this Hakka Girl was unharmed.
To my surprise, my casual inquiry caused a blush to appear on her face.
"I'm... fine. How about you?"
A sense of foreboding washed over me. I could hear Fatty's warning echoing in my ears. My feelings toward this Hakka Girl were purely observational; I had no intention of crossing any boundaries. It wasn't because she was sacred, but rather because she was too mysterious. I defined her as a siren; getting entangled with her would surely drain me dry, in one way or another.
Fortunately, the European timely intervened. He shouted at me, "Ha?"
It seemed that without Jack to translate, the European couldn't communicate with us properly. However, he had heard my voice and noticed my serious demeanor, worrying that he might miss out on important information.
I pointed at him and gestured while shouting, "You... are injured?"
"Yes, left arm fracture."
I mimicked Jack's gesture and made a cross over my chest. "God bless you."
"No!" the European exclaimed. "You are in pain; you should ask your hands for this is your responsibility."
Damn it, Jack must have talked to him, but he likely misunderstood or misinterpreted Jack's meaning. The American Guy knew that the leader of this Expedition Team was Cao Mingzhe; there was no way he would place the captain's hat on my head. Most likely, Jack had instructed him to stick close to me and follow my lead; the American Guy wouldn't encourage me to usurp power.
"Captain is dead." I replied tersely, turning my face towards another warrior still sitting on the ground. "What about you? Can you still move?"
This warrior was one that Jack had risked his life to save, carrying back two injured soldiers; the other one was European. It seemed that this warrior's injuries were more severe.
He pointed to his chest. "I can't breathe, it hurts a lot."
My heart sank as I realized that this symptom likely indicated a serious injury to his chest or lungs.
I glanced at the cave entrance; the fire there was still blazing fiercely, but I knew it wouldn't last long. Without any fuel, the flames would quickly extinguish, relying solely on the White Phosphorus Residue inside the incendiary devices.
I rummaged through my backpack and found only two incendiary devices left. This amount would not last long enough to keep the fire going until I could perform chest surgery on him.
We had a professional Master of Medicine Student and enough basic medical equipment to support a surgical procedure, but we didn't have time. The moment the flames died down would be the moment when a swarm of mosquitoes surged into the cave entrance.
