"Turn off the flashlight, throw away all the glow sticks, and don't make any noise. Prepare for battle as you leave the ventilation duct. Don't block the vent, and don't obstruct anyone else's way out."
Xiao Guolin spoke rapidly, causing both me and Liu Squad Leader behind me to tense up involuntarily. I quickly relayed Xiao Guolin's words to those behind us. Soon, the ventilation duct was engulfed in darkness.
I patted Xiao Guolin's leg and nervously asked, "Is the exit just ahead?"
Xiao Guolin lowered his voice, "No, it will take a while. But this stretch is the most dangerous; we must not have any accidents, or we're all done for, and I won't be able to escape either."
"Can you give me a hint about what dangers lie ahead? I need to be mentally prepared."
His cautious tone only heightened my anxiety.
"Well..." I could tell Xiao Guolin was choosing his words carefully. "You call them Upright Monsters, right? Let's stick with that name. When we go out, it's very likely we'll encounter those things."
" Fatty... and another group are outside?" I asked Xiao Guolin nervously.
Of course, I thought that way; the key point in the message Fatty sent me was that they were attacked by Upright Monsters. And if Xiao Guolin believed we would likely run into Upright Monsters upon leaving the ventilation duct, then wouldn't that mean we would end up in the same place as Fatty and his group?
I was eager to reunite with Fatty; having the Antimatter Bomb in someone else's hands didn't sit well with me. I preferred handing Xiao Ting over to him while I took charge of the Antimatter Bomb. It was troubling to be responsible for someone else's partner.
I should be the one to destroy Eternal Gate! Although Tang Yumo's prophecy was dubious at best, it at least boosted my confidence. Psychological suggestions worked not only for me but for everyone else too. Jack firmly believed I could bring down Eternal Gate.
However, having Xiao Guolin with us was the biggest unknown variable; I had no idea how he would react upon seeing the Antimatter Bomb. Even though it was he who had planned for it and commissioned me to bring it down, I couldn't be sure now whether he intended to blow this place up—destroying Eternal Gate.
"How would I know where they are? This place is vast; the chances of running into them are slim, but encountering Upright Monsters is highly likely. We must be prepared," Xiao Guolin's voice echoed hollowly in the dark ventilation duct. "From now on, no talking, no sounds at all. I'll signal you when we reach the exit."
True to his word, Xiao Guolin crawled forward without making a sound. But we couldn't manage that; even though we weren't speaking, securing our weapons tightly against ourselves still made noise as we crawled through the metal ventilation duct.
In fact, any sound provided a sense of reassurance; at least in this pitch-black duct, I knew there were people behind me. Yet I felt no presence from Xiao Guolin; he seemed to have vanished. No matter how fast or slow I crawled, I couldn't catch up with him; there was no sound coming from ahead.
The only proof of his existence was the dust stirred up by his movements.
Suddenly, a sound akin to disengaging a gun's safety echoed ahead of me.
It was too quiet. Even the slightest noise felt unbearably loud.
I felt my ears and hair stand on end. A sound echoed not far in front of me, appearing without any warning. I couldn't even be sure if it was coming from Xiao Guolin. If he were here, would he give me a signal? A good signal? Was this it?
But the sound resembled the click of a gun's safety. I knew Xiao Guolin wasn't armed; he was only wearing a pair of pants. If not for modesty, those pants would be unnecessary for him. He seemed accustomed to the temperature here. Of course, the fact that it wasn't very cold contributed to that.
Just thinking about it made it clear that there were countless Giant Mosquitoes around, and the environment that allowed them to thrive surely wouldn't be too cold.
I hesitated for three to five seconds, estimating that the people behind me had also heard this strange sound. In those few seconds, the Ventilation Duct was eerily silent, as quiet as a vacuum.
The heart-stopping silence didn't last long. Suddenly—
"Clang!"
A loud noise rang out in front of me, like two pieces of metal colliding.
Immediately after, Xiao Guolin's furious voice echoed through the Ventilation Duct. "Charge! Shoot outward! Don't let it in!"
To avoid making noise, I kept my 16 tightly strapped to my body. Upon hearing Xiao Guolin's shout, I realized we were facing a life-or-death moment; any notion of staying silent became irrelevant.
In the shortest time possible, I grabbed my 16. There was no time to turn on the One-Eyed Beast Flashlight; I aimed directly ahead in the Ventilation Duct and fired.
"Da-da-da!"
The noise from the 16 wasn't particularly loud; compared to the AK-47 I had used before, it could be considered a silenced weapon. But in this narrow Ventilation Duct, the gunfire was exceptionally piercing, resonating and nearly deafening my ears.
In the pitch-black environment, even the slightest light stood out starkly—like the bright red bullets.
The moment the bullet left the Muzzle, its light illuminated the walls of the Ventilation Duct around me. In my immediate vicinity, I saw nothing—no sign of Xiao Guolin.
My line of sight was limited to what was within reach; the light from the bullets wasn't enough to illuminate my path.
However, that light could help me discern whether danger awaited me ahead or obstructed my way.
The dark red glow of the bullet resembled infrared light, outlining a shadow in front of me. I could roughly make out that there was an exit less than ten meters ahead, and at that exit, a figure resembling a Big Monkey was trying to squeeze into the Ventilation Duct.
The dark red trajectory of the bullet was clearly visible in the black ventilation duct, much like the closed-loop multi-point technology of a dense formation, allowing me to continuously adjust the direction of the muzzle.
The sound of the bullet striking the shadow was distinctly audible; it didn't resemble the sound of hitting flesh but rather that of a blow against a piece of wood, producing a loud noise akin to a woodpecker tapping on a tree.
This figure, resembling a big monkey, was certainly not Xiao Guolin. At the moment my gunfire echoed, intense sounds of combat erupted outside the entrance. It must have been Xiao Guolin engaging with other Upright Monsters.
However, the sounds coming from outside were sharp and piercing, unlike bare-handed combat; they sounded more like ironware clashing. I knew that Xiao Guolin was unarmed, and I couldn't imagine how such metallic sounds were being produced.
But I had no time to ponder these matters. A magazine was emptied in an instant, but thankfully I had prepared in advance. Although most of my ammunition was in my backpack, I had two fully loaded magazines tucked at my waist to buy time for fighting and survival.
While I wasn't as fast as Jack at changing magazines, after so many life-and-death experiences, my mental fortitude was quite decent. When swapping magazines, I remained unaffected by external factors; even with a Monster potentially lunging at me from close range, I calmly replaced it with a new magazine.
At that moment, a beam of light shone from behind me.
