I must be the key person. But what exactly is my role? From the performance of Song Guilong and Cao Mingzhe, it seems that my purpose is not as simple as just opening the Eternal Gate.
This question is beyond my comprehension at the moment. My brain, with an IQ of less than one hundred and thirty, cannot decipher the riddle.
The people behind the stretcher keep rotating, but only Cao Mingzhe remains unchanged in front. After running for such a long time, he must be exhausted; I can hear his heavy breathing. This is the first time I've witnessed such a phenomenon in a non-human physical awakener. I can sense that Cao Mingzhe is giving it his all.
That piece of iron is not with Cao Mingzhe!
After Song Guilong's death, my consciousness has been in a state of coma and semi-coma. I don't know who searched Song Guilong; someone must have done it. There’s a secret on him that I can't extract from his lips, so I can only look for clues among his belongings.
If that piece of iron were in Cao Mingzhe's hands, he wouldn't need to push himself so hard. To tire out someone with physical mutations like a dog, the reward he seeks from the pursuit would certainly not be just a simple "thank you" from me.
Moreover, when I was conscious, I saw his expression. He looked genuinely anxious and nervous; it didn’t seem like an act. Including his words: to reach the Eternal Gate in the shortest time possible. Otherwise, we would all be trapped here and die!
This means that my importance is still evident; opening the Eternal Gate still relies on me.
But where did that piece of iron go?
If Song Guilong relied on that piece of iron to open the Eternal Gate and gained control over it, he should have been extremely concerned about it and kept it close at all times.
With Song Guilong dead and that piece of iron not in Cao Mingzhe's possession, then whose hands did it fall into?
My gaze swept over the people behind us: A San, the warrior, Jack and European, Xiao Ting, Tang Yumo, A-Yong.
I believe everyone could potentially have it; similarly, each person has aspects that should not be doubted.
I quickly gave up on guessing. We are down to just these few people now—among them are my absolutely trusted teammates and those I must protect with my life. Speculation would only breed distrust. It wouldn’t help our current predicament at all.
My thoughts returned to square one. Whose words should I trust?
Through meticulous analysis, my trust in Cao Mingzhe has shifted from absolute belief to utter disbelief. The level of trust has plummeted to freezing point.
I feel that he is hiding a significant secret from me, and his credibility is even lower than that of Xiao Guolin.
This is a terrifying realization that sends chills down my spine.
Xiao Guolin has already been confirmed by both Xiao Ting and me to be an impostor. He isn't even human.
Yet, this 'non-human' has a higher level of credibility than a teammate with whom I have fought side by side. Have I changed? Is it my problem, or is it this damned environment?
A surge of inexplicable anger rises within me. Destroy it, destroy everything here!
The source of suspicion and distrust lies within the human heart, but it is this cursed environment that changes hearts—the Eternal Gate, which I have yet to see but will inevitably confront.
Destroy the Eternal Gate! This is the only common ground between Xiao Guolin and me. It is also the greatest difference between Xiao Guolin and Cao Mingzhe as well as Song Guilong.
Whether it is Cao Mingzhe or Song Guilong, both wish to borrow or exploit the power of the Eternal Gate. Only Xiao Guolin's goal is singular and clear: to destroy the Eternal Gate.
This is the prerequisite for my belief in him. Moreover, various signs indicate that he has consistently worked towards this goal from the very beginning.
He has planned for the Antimatter Bomb and managed to inform me about it, giving me the opportunity to obtain it. Now, he is even willing to risk everything to destroy this place, nearly turning himself into a useless shell.
Among these three individuals, I can only choose to believe in one. That reluctant choice falls on Xiao Guolin, whose ultimate purpose aligns with mine.
By choosing to trust Xiao Guolin, I must completely deny Cao Mingzhe and overturn the viewpoints he has instilled in me. I will also keep all information regarding Xiao Guolin completely hidden from him, including details about Fatty and the Antimatter Bomb.
Fortunately, I have always kept the matter of the Antimatter Bomb a secret from him. I imagine that when I finally reveal this trump card at the last moment, his expression will be quite something to behold.
Thinking of Fatty made my heart clench involuntarily.
Even though I felt like I was living in hell, on the brink of death at any moment, the thought of Fatty possibly dying here because of me caused a sharp pain in my chest.
I couldn't let my brother die here! For his sake, I had to hold on and protect his woman. I needed to ensure they would be reunited. I couldn't let my brother down!
I silently swore and clenched my fist, but my weak body only managed to move two fingers slightly.
My mind was strong, but my body remained frail.
I gave up on impulse. Despite my body's weakness making it hard to move, the slight movement of my fingers ignited a glimmer of hope for survival within me. For the first time, I felt that I might actually reach the Eternal Gate alive.
Then I had to prepare myself mentally for that possibility.
I could see A San carrying the stretcher. I could also feel that my eyes were slightly open, as if they were stuck in a state of unconsciousness. I thought I had maintained this state because no one seemed excited about it.
I struggled to open my eyes wider. At one moment, my efforts caught A San's attention.
I saw his face suddenly light up with excitement as he stared at me, his mouth agape.
The extent of my physical ability was limited to widening my eyes and slight movements of my fingers. I couldn't stop him from shouting; I couldn't even muster the strength to utter a word.
But my eyes could move. I nervously shifted my gaze from left to right and back again, repeating the motion several times.
I desperately widened my eyes, trying to make the movement of my eyeballs more noticeable.
My efforts were not in vain; A San opened his mouth but did not make a sound.
I took a deep breath and closed my tired, aching eyes.
I struggled to move my lips. This was much harder than moving my eyelids. My goal was simple: I needed to know the situation on Fatty's side before reaching the Eternal Gate. Then, I could draft a rough plan for the next steps.
There was no way to communicate in real-time with Fatty anymore; his Listener was already dead. However, A San was still alive, and he could hear what was happening on Fatty's side. I wanted to find out what Xiao Guolin had said to Fatty and whether Fatty understood the warning I had given him.
Xiao Guolin's actions on Fatty's side would serve as the final verification of his credibility.
Based on his last performance, I would decide on the next course of action. Of course, it might not be my action; I had already lost the ability to act. I was fighting for survival for those who were still alive and capable of taking action. Naturally, all of this had to be done without Cao Mingzhe's knowledge.
Finally, after some effort, I managed to move my mouth slightly.
I silently asked A San, "Has Xiao Guolin found Fatty?" (To Be Continued.)
