"Remember this for a second," he said, "we've all been fooled. You, me, and them." Song Guilong pointed his Black Longsword at the air. "He has never trusted me, nor anyone else. We are all his pawns, not players in the game."
"Who is he?" Even facing a life-and-death battle, I still wanted to know who was behind everything, orchestrating it all.
"He is the Master." The fierce light in Song Guilong's eyes was replaced by helplessness and powerlessness. "If there is a god in this world, it must be him. He can change the rules."
"What is the Master? Have you seen him?"
Song Guilong stood five meters away from me and shook his head.
I heard A San's teeth chattering nervously; my legs felt weak as well. At this distance, Song Guilong could instantly kill us. Yet, A San took a step forward. He was ready to make a move.
"I was the one who transmitted the information that you are an Awakener." Song Guilong ignored A San, letting his hands holding the Black Longsword drop to his sides, his gaze fixed on me. "I have no doubt about this. I believe no one questions this information.
Everyone is devising their own plans against you. My plan is relatively simple: to stop you from entering the Eternal Gate, or even from reaching Lop Nur. Of course, killing you would solve this problem most thoroughly; that is the final solution.
I had Xiao Guolin warn you not to approach the Eternal Gate; you should have received that warning, yet here you are."
"Killing you is not a choice I want to make, but I'm sorry; at that time, I had no other option."
"I understand now. You used dreams to convey false information to Xiao Guolin and Cao Mingzhe, along with countless other false messages, luring them here..."
At this point, I frowned. Clearly, reality did not match my judgment; there seemed to be a significant gap in causality.
"It seems you've sensed it too—my relationship with Cao Mingzhe and Xiao Guolin is not so simple. Let me clarify: it wasn't me who transmitted information to Xiao Guolin through dreams; I don't have that ability."
The only one who could convey this message to him was his true self. The Xiao Guolin who returned to your world was merely a shadow!
However, Old Xiao was quite resilient. The one who returned to your world was him, that shadow. He actually managed to break free from the control of his true self and devised a plan to destroy this place. I could only think that it was a miracle.
“What about Cao Mingzhe? Is he also a shadow?” I asked eagerly.
Song Guilong shook his head. “There’s no time for details. Cao Mingzhe has already rushed over to thwart Xiao Guolin’s plan; Old Xiao can’t handle it alone. I need to go help him.”
“Don’t go!”
I shouted. I couldn’t believe his words; how did I know he wasn’t going to sabotage both Xiao Guolin and my plans?
As soon as I finished speaking, I saw A San’s body shoot towards Song Guilong like a bullet, only to bounce back just as quickly, collapsing on the Ground, shaking uncontrollably.
My eyes turned red. I had regarded A San as a brother, and I couldn’t let my brother’s blood be shed in vain. I drew a dagger from my leg and lunged at Song Guilong.
I couldn’t build up any speed; I didn’t even take a step forward. It felt as if I struck a ridiculous pose of advancement but was frozen in place. I turned around and glared fiercely at Jack, who had one hand gripping my belt.
“Look at A San; he’s about to go into shock,” Jack indicated with his eyes towards A San on the ground.
I understood Jack; although he was calm, he wasn’t heartless and wouldn’t stand by while A San died before him.
I looked down and saw that A San was still convulsing on the ground, but there was no blood flowing beneath or around him. Song Guilong hadn’t dealt a fatal blow; he hadn’t even used a knife to push A San back—it must have been a kick.
I immediately knelt beside A San. Turning him over, I found an obvious footprint on his chest. I quickly laid him flat, tilted his head back slightly, and lifted his eyelid to check. A San looked at me and trembled out a single word: “Pain.”
As long as he felt pain, that was good enough for me. My heart finally settled down.
"What exactly is that black hole? Why can't we go in, but Xiao Ting can?"
I was still kneeling on the ground, checking A San's injuries when Jack eagerly posed his question.
Clearly, Song Guilong was not interested in Jack. I didn't hear Song Guilong's response.
My mind was a jumble; too much had happened in such a short time. The overwhelming amount of information and the unknown made it impossible for me to accurately assess the current situation. I couldn't even confirm whether Song Guilong was friend or foe.
But I had a basic judgment: Song Guilong currently had no intention of killing me or us. With Xiao Ting missing, I could only rely on Song Guilong to find out her whereabouts and fate.
I stood up and pointed at the black hole beside me, addressing Song Guilong: "Where did Xiao Ting go? Can you get her out? Or how can we find her?"
Song Guilong furrowed his brow as he looked at the black hole, his eyes suddenly brightening. "No, this shouldn't be."
I took a deep breath and spoke more sternly: "Old Song, are you really Old Song? If you are, please help me bring back Xiao Ting."
Song Guilong turned his gaze to me and shook his head. "No one can enter the Eternal Gate! Before today, no one had ever entered it. Of course, no one knows where she went. But I can tell you some bad news: for anyone who enters the Eternal Gate, death is the best outcome. No one can save her!"
"Where's your master?!" I shouted in anger.
"He is not my master. He never was." Song Guilong shook his head again. "I came here hoping to do something—not to destroy humanity, but the opposite. Stopping the Awakener from entering the Eternal Gate is at the core of this matter, while my master's plan is to lure the Awakener into the Eternal Gate. It seems he may have won."
"You have the key; that piece of iron is in your hand. You should be able to enter the Eternal Gate, right?"
"That's a lie or a bait. That piece of iron is indeed important, but it is not the key to open the Eternal Gate. The key to opening the Eternal Gate is the Awakener."
"Then, Xiao Ting is the Awakener."
Silence. This statement left Song Guilong silent for a moment.
"I don't know. I think everything is a mystery. The Lord is manipulating everything behind the scenes; you and I are just pawns in His game. Only the Lord knows the direction of events and the truth," Song Guilong said with a bitter smile. "You know? One must have the awareness of being a pawn."
"What awareness? To be at His mercy?"
"No, to finish what you want to do. Even if you end up being consumed, you should still shine. By the way, the Antimatter Bomb will emit light when it explodes, right?"
"What are you trying to do?" I asked nervously.
"Ensure it explodes. Regardless of whether it can disrupt the Lord's plans, it might not be without hope; perhaps it can truly change something."
As Song Guilong said this, his gaze anxiously turned toward the black hole. (To Be Continued.)
