Zhou Cuiping was following Zhou Erlang up the mountain in search of ginseng. She knew how valuable ginseng was, so she came to the mountain every day to look for it.
"Pingping."
Su Xiawei called out.
Zhou Cuiping turned around and, upon seeing Su Xiawei, her expression immediately darkened.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm just checking to see how you're doing," Su Xiawei replied.
"I'm doing just fine, no need for you to worry," Zhou Cuiping said coldly.
"That's good to hear. But there are many things on the mountain that shouldn't be touched, and I don't know if they're poisonous. Be careful," Su Xiawei kindly reminded her.
"What do you mean by that?" Zhou Cuiping snapped, anger flashing in her eyes. "Are you hoping for me to get poisoned?"
"I didn't mean it that way," Su Xiawei frowned.
"You did, you definitely did." Zhou Cuiping burst into tears. "Brother, brother, they're bullying me."
Su Xiawei was left speechless.
"Let's go," she said, pulling Su Xiaoxiao away with her.
Su Xiaoxiao looked back three times as they walked away, reluctant to leave Zhou Cuiping behind.
That night, Su Xiaoxiao secretly went to the Zhou family home. She wanted to ask Zhou Cuiping in person how she was doing.
When Zhou Cuiping saw Su Xiaoxiao, she looked displeased. "What are you doing here?"
"Pingping, are you doing well?" Su Xiaoxiao asked cautiously.
"What does my well-being have to do with you?" Zhou Cuiping shouted. "Are you here to laugh at me?"
"No, no," Su Xiaoxiao quickly waved her hands. "Pingping, you've misunderstood. I'm worried about you."
"Worried about me?" Zhou Cuiping scoffed. "Aren't you just pretending to care?"
With that, she shouted loudly, "Eldest Brother! Second Brother! Third Brother!"
Su Xiaoxiao panicked, "Pingping, what's wrong with you?"
"I want to tell the brothers that you want to take me away," Zhou Cuiping shouted.
The Zhou Family heard the commotion and rushed out.
Upon seeing Su Xiaoxiao, they immediately grabbed her.
"How dare you, Su Xiaoxiao, think about taking Pingping away!"
Old Man Zhou seized Su Xiaoxiao by the collar and dragged her to Su Xiawei's house.
When Su Da Bao returned and saw the Zhou Family, he was somewhat bewildered.
"Su Xiawei, look at the maid you bought; she actually wants to take Pingping away."
Old Man Zhou pushed Su Xiaoxiao in front of Su Da Bao.
"My sister is not that kind of person."
Su Da Bao pushed Old Man Zhou's hand away, "I will handle my family's matters myself; I don't need your interference."
"Handle it? How will you handle it?"
Old Man Zhou pressed on relentlessly, "If you don't give us an explanation today, I won't leave."
"Not leaving, huh?"
Su Da Bao rolled up his sleeves, "I'll make sure you don't leave."
With that, he began throwing the Zhou Family members out one by one.
"Don't come to my house again; it's bad luck."
Zhou Cuiping watched this scene, her eyes darting around before she shouted at the top of her lungs, "Brother, this Su Xiaoxiao knows martial arts. If she wants to run, you won't be able to stop her."
"I'll find a way to take Xiaoxiao away; you all be careful," Zhou Cuiping said before following the Zhou Family out.
Su Xiaoxiao looked at Zhou Cuiping's retreating figure, feeling utterly heartbroken.
She couldn't understand why Pingping had changed like this. She was clearly not like that.
"Pingping!"
Su Xiaoxiao rushed out of the house and shouted at Zhou Cuiping's back.
Chapter 6
The next day, Su Xiaoxiao felt extremely anxious.
She believed she had done something wrong and might be scolded by Su Xiawei and Su Da Bao.
With her head down, she absentmindedly embroidered a handkerchief.
"Xiaoxiao, it's time for lunch," Su Xiawei called as she brought the food to the table.
"Okay."
Su Xiaoxiao put down her handkerchief and walked to the dining table. Just as she picked up her chopsticks, tears began to flow.
"What's wrong?" Su Xiawei and Su Da Bao looked at her in confusion.
"Sister, Brother, I'm sorry," Su Xiaoxiao cried. "I shouldn't have gone to the Zhou family yesterday; I caused you trouble."
"It's okay." Su Xiawei chuckled softly. "Even if you hadn't gone, I would have."
"Xiaoxiao, you did nothing wrong." Su Da Bao picked up a piece of meat and placed it on her plate. "Let's eat!"
"Thank you, Brother. Thank you, Sister." Su Xiaoxiao felt deeply moved. After spending time together, she truly believed that Su Xiawei and Su Da Bao were good people. She regarded them as family.
"By the way, Xiaoxiao, in a few days, I'll take you home," Su Xiawei said.
"Okay." Su Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Sister, where are you going?" Su Da Bao asked.
"To seek revenge," Su Xiawei replied.
"Wherever Sister goes, I will go too," Su Da Bao declared.
...
After Zhou Cuiping returned home, she was very attentive. She helped Old Man Zhou with cooking and washed clothes for his brothers. She hoped that by doing so, they would come to like her.
Zhou Cuiping brought the food to the table and set the bowls and chopsticks neatly. "Father, brothers, it's time to eat," she said with a sweet smile.
"Mm." Old Man Zhou responded with a grunt.
During the meal, Old Man Zhou kept sighing.
Zhou Cuiping felt a sense of unease as she cautiously asked, "Father, what's wrong?"
"The ginseng won't sell," Old Man Zhou sighed. "How are we supposed to get by?"
"Don't worry, Father. I'll think of a way," Zhou Cuiping reassured him.
"You'll think of a way? What can you possibly do?" Old Man Zhou shot her a glare. "If you could sell the ginseng, would we be reduced to eating this?"
"Father, please don't be angry. I will try my best," Zhou Cuiping quickly replied.
"What good is trying?" Old Man Zhou scoffed. "You just don't have what it takes."
"Father, please don't scold Pingping. She's been working very hard," Zhou Erlang interjected.
"Exactly, Pingping is very obedient," her other brothers chimed in.
Zhou Cuiping felt touched by their support.
"You all are just siding with her," Old Man Zhou threw down his chopsticks. "I'm not eating anymore."
"Father." Zhou Cuiping quickly grabbed his hand. "Please don't be angry. I'll think it over carefully; there must be a way."
"Hmph!" Old Man Zhou shook off her hand and retreated to his room.
Zhou Cuiping looked at the table full of dishes, feeling a knot in her stomach. Inside, she cursed: Useless, truly useless! They can't even fill their stomachs and expect me to help them sell ginseng? What a dream!
