I paused for a moment, continuing to pack the things in my hands. "I need to go back and ask my parents."
Ma Hongkuan nodded slightly. "Alright, I'll take you back."
With that, he turned to head outside. I quickly stopped him. " Ma Hongkuan, I'm going back to the village for the annulment, not for a wedding."
The smile on Ma Hongkuan's face froze. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something but hesitated.
I couldn't be bothered with him and turned back to my room. Leaning against the headboard, I gazed out at the pitch-black night.
Paying off debts is only right and just. In my past life, I spent my entire life repaying the the Ma Family's kindness. In this life, I want to walk my own path.
The next morning, Ma Hongkuan woke up early and prepared breakfast. It was rare for him to show such thoughtfulness. I didn't hold back and quietly sat down at the table to eat.
For a moment, the only sound at the dining table was the clinking of bowls and chopsticks.
" Fen, can I take a leave and accompany you back to the village?" he asked.
I looked up at him in surprise while chewing my food. He kept his head down, not daring to meet my gaze. "It's not safe for a girl like you to go back to the village."
I had mentioned going back for the annulment several times before, but each time he had changed the subject. This time, he was being quite proactive.
I instinctively refused, "No need..."
Just as I finished speaking, there was a knock at the door.
"Uncle Ma, open the door."
The voice wasn't loud, but everyone inside could hear it.
Ma Hongkuan glanced at me and got up to open the door.
"Uncle Ma, I'm here to play!"
The visitor was none other than Niu Xinran's daughter, Panpan.
She had her hair in two ponytails and was wearing a pink dress, leaning against the door and peeking inside.
Ma Hongkuan picked her up and held her high: "Panpan, did you miss your uncle?"
Panpan clapped her hands excitedly: "Yes, yes, yes!"
Holding her, Ma Hongkuan turned to me:
" Fen, Sister Xinran isn't feeling well. I'll be back soon."
With that, he ran off with Panpan in his arms, not even bothering to say sorry.
I scoffed; this was just perfect.
Without Ma Hongkuan around, I had much less to worry about when returning to the village.
I sat down at the table and continued eating my breakfast.
Only eighteen days remained until I went back to the village.
I hurriedly organized my books and notes.
Later, I would go to school and sell all these things.
It would be just enough for my bus ticket.
I took out my backpack and stuffed in bundles of books and exam papers.
Finally, I counted the money in my hand.
Thirteen dollars.
I shouldered my backpack and set off on the road back to the village. By the time I arrived in the countryside, it was already afternoon.
Uncle and Aunt, upon hearing that I wanted an annulment, immediately accompanied me to the team without a second thought. They disagreed with my decision regarding Ma Hongkuan and the annulment, but they respected my choice. The members of the team knew me well and were aware of my betrothal to Ma Hongkuan. When they heard about my intention to annul the engagement, they seemed bewildered.
" Fen, your marriage to Ma Hongkuan was arranged since childhood. How can you annul it?"
Uncle's face turned serious. " Fen's wish to annul is her own freedom. If you disagree, then don't marry my daughter."
"Otherwise, we have our ways to deal with that boy."
The team issued a certificate and returned the token from our initial engagement to me. As we stepped out of the team office, Uncle and Aunt remained silent. I could sense their discomfort; they had always regarded me as their own daughter. Now that their daughter was leaving home, how could they be happy?
I paused, turned around, and embraced them tightly. "Uncle, Aunt, I will come back to visit you often."
They leaned on my shoulder and cried. I held back my tears and gently patted their backs.
After returning home, I spent half a month with them. During that time, they kept reminding me to visit home often in the future. I promised them one by one.
