In the living room, the laughter of Niu Xinran and her daughter echoed in the air. Coupled with the music coming from next door, I found it impossible to sleep. After a moment's thought, I got up to fetch some water.
As soon as I stepped outside, I ran into Aunt Ying. She looked at me, momentarily taken aback.
" Fen, aren't you supposed to be on your honeymoon with Ma Hongkuan?"
I paused for a moment before responding with a smile, "Yeah, he just got back."
Aunt Ying pursed her lips. "You’re just too naive, girl. Bringing them home like this... what will happen in the future..."
She sighed. "Well, never mind. Just think about it yourself."
Aunt Ying meant well. She knew how my marriage with Ma Hongkuan had come about and had always stood up for me over the years. I didn’t say much more; I filled my cup with water and returned to my room.
Upon entering, I was taken aback. The bathroom was cluttered with many new items—women's towels, shampoo... and even a pair of underwear.
I gritted my teeth and left the room again. Niu Xinran was in the bathroom helping Panpan use the toilet.
" Fen, move aside; I'm helping Panpan."
I pressed my lips together and didn’t budge. Panpan looked at me with dissatisfaction. "Auntie, stinky."
I wore a stern expression. "This is my home; it's you who should leave."
Niu Xinran stood in front of the bathroom door, refusing to budge.
" Fen, I'm not saying this to hurt you, but Panpan is still a child. You shouldn't stoop to her level."
"Besides, Panpan doesn't like you, yet you keep trying to get close."
I clenched my fists. "I don't like her either, and I don't want to see her."
Niu Xinran blocked my way into the bathroom. "Panpan, let's finish up and go outside, okay?"
Panpan nodded and made a face at me. "Auntie, stinky!"
I took a deep breath and turned to leave.
Just as I took a couple of steps, Panpan bumped into me. She fell to the ground and started crying loudly.
Ma Hongkuan heard the commotion and rushed over.
Niu Xinran's eyes were red as she said, " Fen, I know you hate me, but Panpan is just a child; she doesn't understand anything."
I kept my head down, unwilling to speak.
Ma Hongkuan helped Panpan up and gently comforted her. "Don't cry, Panpan; Uncle cares for you."
Niu Xinran wiped her eyes and continued, " Fen, I know you don't like me, but you can't take it out on Panpan."
Ma Hongkuan looked at me and said, " Fen, apologize to Panpan."
I kept my head down and turned back to my room.
After taking a shower, I gathered my things into the basin.
When I left the bathroom, Niu Xinran and Panpan had already gone.
On the bedside table was a box of candies. It must have been prepared for Panpan.
Ma Hongkuan stood up as soon as he saw me.
" Fen, I know what you're going to say."
He grabbed my arm. "What happened today was Panpan's fault, but after all, she's just a child, and Xinran has it tough too."
He looked at me. "You shouldn't stoop to their level."
I let out a cold laugh. "What right do I have to stoop to their level?"
Ma Hongkuan sighed in relief. "I'm just glad you can see it that way. I was worried about your temper..."
"Are you not afraid Niu Xinran will find out what you said about me?"
Ma Hongkuan paused for a moment. "You know?"
"Yes, I know."
I nodded. "You tell everyone that I agreed to let Niu Xinran stay at our house."
Ma Hongkuan awkwardly tugged at the corner of his mouth. "That's not..."
"Not what?"
I sneered. " Ma Hongkuan, there's no need for you to put on an act in front of me."
"I can understand the restlessness in your heart."
"I just want to advise you, you'd better not go too far."
"A cornered rabbit will bite."
"If I really blow this up, you won't have the face to stay here either."
Ma Hongkuan opened his mouth but had no words to say.
I snorted coldly and turned to leave.
