I immediately gathered everyone in the village and explained everything clearly, even pulling up the surveillance footage to leave Hua Xiaobei and his group speechless.
The crowd erupted into a chaotic discussion, but after listening for a while, all I heard were insults directed at Xiuying; no one said a word against Hua Xiaobei.
"What are you all making noise about at this hour?"
Ding Youtian, whom I had also called over, was straightforward with me. My demand was simple: I wanted the most influential person in Panhu Village to give me justice.
Upon seeing Hua Xiaobei, Ding Youtian kicked him and exclaimed, "You can't even handle such a small matter; you're truly useless!"
Then he turned serious and said to me, "Xiaobei is in the wrong, but ultimately, this matter falls back on you."
"On me?"
"Our village has always been united regardless of wealth or poverty, but ever since you arrived, it's become one-sided. The villagers are complaining bitterly; several families are struggling to make ends meet because of you."
"What do you mean they can't make ends meet because of me? It's their choice to spend at whoever's place; I didn't force them to come to my shop."
"You’re from the city with better skills than us in this small place. If you raised your prices a bit to create some distinction, that would be one thing. But you claim your prices are low and your skills are good—of course everyone will flock to you. Isn’t that monopolizing?"
What a joke! So apparently, my skill and not wanting to charge high prices is a crime.
"Village Chief, if you want to forge iron, you must first be strong yourself. You said it yourself: business should be about fair and reasonable competition."
"And right now, the store is thriving. Raising prices would be like taking advantage of a fire; what will others think of me?"
"Then just close the store and leave."
What!?
Before I could recover from the shock, the crowd began to cheer.
"The village chief is right! An outsider has taken advantage of our village for too long; it's time for him to pack up and go!"
"He should return all the money he made before leaving; that was all thanks to our village!"
"Exactly! If it weren't for our village's beautiful mountains and rivers, he wouldn't have made so much money with his limited skills!"
The villagers grew increasingly agitated, shouting for me to get lost, and some even picked up stones to throw at me.
"The people's will is strong, and it's hard to go against their anger. You've been tired lately; from now on, let Xiaobei handle the store. It's good for you to take a break."
Looking at Ding Youtian's cold face, I finally understood that he was the most cunning fox of all.
He first gained my trust by playing good cop with Hua Xiaobei, then used my popularity to boost Panhu Village's reputation. Now that Panhu Village is famous, he immediately wants to kick me out.
I was such a fool to trust him and let him play me like a puppet.
Right now, I had no choice but to leave; he and Hua Xiaobei were both wearing smug expressions as they watched my predicament.
But he overestimated himself and underestimated me.
He didn't know that a developer was coming to meet me tomorrow to discuss investment, nor did he realize that Qingshui Village had already extended an olive branch to me.
That night, I smashed the shop to pieces and boarded a bus out of the village without looking back.
In this impoverished land, I was ready to watch you all rot!
Panhu Mountain and Qingshui Village had always been at odds.
Years ago, both villages were nestled in the valley, equally poor, until a natural disaster made the village head of Qingshui Village realize the importance of poverty alleviation.
Village Head Zhang discovered that the lake behind the village was picturesque and reminiscent of the Peach Blossom Spring described by Tao Yuanming. He immediately applied to higher authorities to develop tourism.
From that point on, Qingshui Village began to prosper.
Under Village Head Zhang's leadership, villagers learned various crafts, and each household found an additional source of income beyond farming.
Today, Qingshui Village is worlds apart from Panhu Village, yet even now, Village Head Zhang continues to seek new developments for the village.
After leaving the village, I rushed to Qingshui Village overnight and randomly found a hotel to stay in, sleeping until noon the next day.
When I finally woke up, I discovered that Hua Xiaobei had called me dozens of times.
