Lin Yuexi stood on the bustling street, tightly clutching a stack of resumes in her hands, beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
Today, she had interviews with five law firms, each one potentially a turning point in her career.
However, reality was far from ideal; the results of the interviews were disappointing.
“ Yuexi, how did it go on your end?” came the concerned voice of her friend Su Wanqing over the phone.
“Don't even mention it. It felt like I was dealing with a pack of sharks,” Lin Yuexi replied with a bitter smile, her mood heavy.
“Don't lose heart; there will always be a place that suits you,” Su Wanqing comforted her.
Just as Lin Yuexi was about to respond, she felt her foot slip. Instinctively, she reached for the railing beside her but accidentally scattered her resumes all over the ground.
She hurriedly crouched down to pick them up when a strong hand moved faster than hers and gathered the resumes from the floor.
“Thank you.” Lin Yuexi looked up, but her voice faltered upon seeing the person's face.
Lu Tingchen, the name that had once caused her heartache in dreams, stood right in front of her now.
His gaze remained indifferent, as if they had never shared any connection at all.
“Lin Yuexi,” his voice was deep and powerful, breaking through her silence.
“Lu Tingchen,” she replied almost inaudibly.
His eyes lingered on her face for a moment before he coldly handed her the resumes. “It seems you're still the same, always so careless.”
Lin Yuexi took the resumes, a complex mix of emotions swelling within her. She wanted to say something but ultimately just bit her lip and murmured, “Thank you.”
Lu Tingchen did not respond; he turned and walked away, leaving Lin Yuexi standing there, feeling a whirlwind of emotions inside her.
Lin Yuexi stood in front of a skyscraper, took a deep breath, and then stepped inside. Today, she would begin her new job here.
She never expected to be hired by the law firm under Lu Tingchen's group.
"Lin Yuexi, your office is this way," Zhou Han, Lu Tingchen's assistant, said as he led her down the corridor.
As she entered the office, she saw that familiar figure. Lu Tingchen was sitting behind his desk, his sharp gaze fixed on her.
"Mr. Lu," Lin Yuexi's voice trembled slightly.
"Lin Yuexi, I hope you understand that this is a workplace. I do not want any personal feelings to interfere with work," Lu Tingchen's voice was cold.
"I understand," Lin Yuexi nodded, though she felt a pang of disappointment in her heart.
Who wants to have personal feelings with you? Ever since the moment she left him five years ago, she had no intention of having any emotional entanglement with him.
It was just fate that brought them together again here.
He was still so, so cold.
Lu Tingchen's gaze lingered on her for a moment before he turned to Zhou Han.
"Zhou Han, take her to her workstation."
Lin Yuexi followed Zhou Han, but Lu Tingchen's words echoed in her mind.
Five years ago, when Lin Yuexi's mother passed away, she moved in with her father and became part of a blended family with Lu Tingchen's mother.
When she first entered their home, she obediently called him "brother," while the indifference in his eyes pierced her tender heart deeply.
The more she interacted with him, the more she realized he was an unfathomable iceberg.
Living under someone else's roof made her feel a sense of helplessness, forcing her to appease both his mother and him.
Every time, she sweetly called him "Brother," but his response was nothing but cold silence.
Occasionally, when he did speak, it was a chilling mockery.
"Lu Yuexi, don't embarrass us in front of the the Lu Family," he coldly spat out.
At that time, he was the heartthrob of the entire school, the prince charming admired by many girls.
Since high school, his attitude towards her had made her a target for bullying from her classmates.
He looked down on her, and the other girls were even more eager to trample on her. They often dragged her into alleys after school, snatching away all her spare change,
leaving her alone to cry until dark.
Even though she harbored innocent feelings for him, they were forbidden emotions, a secret difficult to voice.
Moreover, he had always regarded her with disdain.
