Wan Qiu felt a sense of foreboding, her heart racing as she suddenly took off running, her footsteps frantic and hurried.
Yun Daoyun, however, remained unhurried. He leisurely pulled out a box of Cinnabar from his pocket before striding after Wan Qiu, a glimmer of determination in his eyes.
After all, Wan Qiu was just a small fox with limited stamina, unable to compete with Yun Daoyun, who could fly using his sword.
Not far into her escape, she was already panting heavily, her pace slowing down until she could run no more. Her stomach began to grumble in protest.
With no other option, Wan Qiu plopped down by the roadside, gasping for breath, her chest heaving dramatically. Yet she stubbornly insisted, “I wouldn’t call this running away; I simply stopped to wait for you.”
Yun Daoyun didn’t mind her defiance and nodded cheerfully, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Alright, this time it doesn’t count.”
He sat beside her and without further ado grabbed Wan Qiu ’s hand, holding her wrist tightly. With his other hand, he opened the box of Cinnabar, his gaze focused as he used his fingertip to write his name in Cinnabar on her palm, leaving a vivid mark.
Wan Qiu was utterly confused, her eyes wide as she wondered what Yun Daoyun was up to.
Strangely enough, even though Yun Daoyun had clearly written his name on her palm with the Cinnabar, in the blink of an eye, it vanished as if erased by some mysterious force.
“All done,” Yun Daoyun said with satisfaction as he released her hand and tucked the box of Cinnabar back into his pocket, patting his chest as if he had accomplished something significant.
“What do you mean ‘all done’?” Wan Qiu nervously turned her hand over several times to inspect it. Her fingers fidgeted as she found nothing unusual, confusion and unease etched on her face.
“We just formed a spirit pact. From now on, you are my spirit beast,” Yun Daoyun chuckled, a hint of pride on his face. “What can I say? You tried to run away and even hurt me with your sword energy!”
"You..." Wan Qiu was stunned, her mouth agape, unable to close it for a long time.
Anyone who had formed a spiritual contract knew that if the spirit beast attacked its master, it would suffer a hundredfold backlash. This meant that from now on, Yun Daoyun could bully her however he wanted, and all she could do was endure.
"Actually, it's nothing. As long as you don't attack me, this contract is meaningless," Yun Daoyun said, immediately seeing through Wan Qiu's thoughts. He comfortingly ruffled her hair, his palm gently stroking the top of her head, which only earned him an even more hostile glare from her.
After thinking for a moment, Yun Daoyun finally made a concession. "To show my sincerity, how about this: I'll treat you to some roasted chicken—consider it a celebration of our inseparable bond."
Wan Qiu's eyelids twitched, her eyes wide open as she shouted, "Absolutely refuse! You’re making a shameless request!"
Seeing Wan Qiu's expression as if she were ready to face death, Yun Daoyun couldn't help but laugh out loud, his laughter bright and carefree. "Don't worry; I have high standards. So you understand!"
"You jerk..." Wan Qiu felt tears welling up again, her eyes reddening. Why did she come down the mountain to find a husband? Wasn't it better to marry a fellow spirit?
What a miserable life...
Days continued to pass in chaos as the human and the spirit wandered aimlessly through the streets.
Occasionally, when money was tight, Yun Daoyun would take Wan Qiu to perform rituals for the nearby villagers.
So every time Wan Qiu was forced to wear a Taoist robe and stand aside in a childlike pose, she wore an unwilling expression filled with resentment: She was a spirit fox! She was neither a monk nor a Taoist priest, let alone an actor! But why did she have to do something so unbefitting of a Fox demon?!
Yun Daoyun replied, "Because you're not charming enough. Rather than tarnishing the reputation of the Fox demon, you might as well change your name and start anew as a spirit!"
"You're talking nonsense! I'm clearly very capable!" Wan Qiu protested, her eyes wide and her face twisted in anger as she shouted. Then, she began to strip, her hands eagerly tugging at her clothes.
Yun Daoyun watched with his arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. "Go on, I'm waiting."
Fuming with rage, Wan Qiu quickly shed her skirt, revealing her alluring figure, now clad only in a tempting water-red belly wrap.
Like an angry little beast, she lunged at Yun Daoyun, wrapping her arms tightly around him. Ignoring his surprise, she started to untie his belt, her fingers fumbling in haste.
As her hands moved lower, they were suddenly caught by a firm grip. Yun Daoyun's voice was low as he asked, "What are you trying to do?"
"In a situation like this with just the two of us, what do you think I’m doing by taking off my clothes?"
