"Li... Qing... Qing..."
As she pressed the call button, the drowsy Li Niannian momentarily wondered if she had encountered a catastrophic flash flood. The high-decibel shouting jolted her awake, and she hurriedly glanced out the window, only to be greeted by the bright sunshine of a clear day.
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, she wore a look of confusion and bewilderment.
"Cousin, you..." Why are you disturbing my dreams so early in the morning?
Her words were still tangled in her throat, unclear and hesitant, when the voice on the other end erupted with a barrage of frantic exclamations.
"Do you have any idea what time it is?! The wedding banquet starts in half an hour—"
At that moment, Li Niannian finally snapped to full awareness.
Right, today she was supposed to attend her cousin's wedding banquet. However, on such a glorious day, surely even the most carefree person wouldn't commit the heinous crime of being late?
Despair washed over her as she looked at the alarm clock on her bedside table, which read 10:30 AM.
What a thunderbolt! All the promises she made last night about arriving early had turned to ashes.
Being late was her specialty.
Li Niannian's cousin-in-law was a senior executive at a certain company, and to cater to her cousin's tastes, they had organized a uniquely European-style wedding banquet at a five-star hotel.
The solemn red carpet stretched from the entrance of the banquet hall all the way to the podium where the newlyweds would exchange their vows. The bride and her father were outside, preparing to enter, while the groom stood ready at the altar.
Being late to a wedding banquet was not a huge deal, but with only one entrance and her timing completely off, she found herself striding—no, sprinting—down the center of the hall under everyone's gaze.
Her face flushed, her steps frantic, and her hair slightly disheveled, every movement radiated anxiety and embarrassment.
Li Niannian felt an overwhelming sadness as nearly everyone witnessed her chaotic appearance stealing the spotlight from the bride.
At that moment, she couldn't lift her head; she could only focus on her own thoughts, silently accepting the laughter directed at her through tear-filled eyes.
However, the tipping point that ignited uproarious laughter throughout the venue was when Li Niannian spectacularly fell onto the red carpet, inadvertently tugging down the bride's veil with her fingers.
She lay awkwardly on the ground, her eyes filled with fear and regret, wishing she could just disappear into a crack in the floor.
It turned out that when someone was having a bad day, it could trigger a series of unfortunate events. For instance, Li Niannian had just "prostrated" herself at a moment of complete silence in front of everyone.
Feeling utterly humiliated, she had an impulse to simply lie there and play dead, but before she knew it, a kind soul helped her up.
Just as she was about to offer a grateful smile, Li Niannian's eyes widened in shock and her mouth fell slightly open as she nervously stammered, "Xu... Jing... Jing..."
Overwhelmed with anxiety and choking on her own words, she finally managed to spit out the last syllable: "Li..."
"It's not Xu... Jing... Jing; call me Manager Xu."
The elegant man speaking wore a perfectly tailored suit, his sharp eyebrows exuding sophistication, and an air of authority surrounded him. He frowned slightly, his gaze revealing a hint of displeasure and scrutiny.
Li Niannian was so startled that her mind seemed to fly far away. Why was her boss appearing at the wedding banquet?
Moreover, he had witnessed such an embarrassing scene… Her body trembled slightly, and her eyes darted around, unable to meet Xu Yuandao's gaze.
For something that was already beyond saving, Li Niannian felt no desire to weep and wail. Yet, unfortunate as she was, she found herself seated next to her boss, in an uncomfortably close arrangement.
Heaven was truly unkind.
Feeling anxious and with her stomach growling in protest, she dared not raise her hand to take food, all because of the imposing figure sitting beside her—Xu Yuandao.
