I met Liu Jian in high school. At that time, he had been placed at the back of the class due to his declining grades. I was among the bottom three thousand students in the class, sitting in the front row, while he sat in the second-to-last row.
I was a rebellious girl who loved seeking thrills, while he was a kind-hearted and attentive boy. As we often looked up and down during class, we gradually became familiar with each other. Eventually, I became his desk mate.
I wasn't someone who enjoyed studying, but ever since I sat next to him, I began to put in effort. I discovered that his handwriting was particularly beautiful—square and powerful, it was pleasing to look at. Whenever I had a question I couldn't solve, I would ask him. He always patiently explained the problems to me, and his detailed explanations made it easy for me to understand.
With his help, my academic performance improved dramatically. I went from being among the bottom three thousand students to ranking two thousand five hundred. My homeroom teacher noticed my significant change and asked how I managed to study so well. Without thinking, I replied, "Liu Jian taught me how to study."
The teacher raised an eyebrow and said, "No wonder he does so well." Then she asked, "Does he not want to change seats?"
I nodded and replied, "How did you know, teacher?"
The teacher smiled and said, "Because many people want to switch seats with him, but he has refused them all."
Later on, I received praise for my progress and asked him, "Did you intentionally leave half of the answers blank on the test?"
He looked at me and smiled, "Xiao Wan, you're very smart."
I proudly replied, "Of course."
Then he suddenly leaned closer to me, "How about I help you come up with a motto?"
I was taken aback, "What motto?"
He laughed, "That way, you'll have more motivation to study."
I nodded, "Sure."
The next day, I saw the motto he had written.
In the motto section, he had scribbled a few words—"Advertising Space for Rent."
I was stunned.
He then asked, "So, what do you think? Do you like it?"
I suppressed my laughter and nodded, "I like it."
From that day on, I focused on those words while studying.
In my senior year, I finally ranked in the top five hundred.
I achieved my goal at last.
These three years were all thanks to Liu Jian.
I transformed from someone who didn't enjoy studying into someone who loved it.
But fate can be cruel.
Liu Jian fell ill.
Terminal cancer.
I stayed by his side, unable to imagine how I would live without him.

I shook my head. "Mom, please don’t persuade me anymore."
"I've made my decision."
"I want to stay with him."
My mother sighed and stopped talking.
Liu Jian and I discussed it and went to take ID photos together. This was our first time doing so after many years of being in a relationship.
