Jiang Rou seemed to sense something. She struggled to move, slowly getting out of bed, each motion appearing laborious.
She reached out to open the door, revealing her husband standing before her. A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, but Xu Shaoji's gaze remained cold and distant, like that of a stranger.
Tears welled up in Jiang Rou's eyes, her eyelids reddening as the tears threatened to spill over. She bit her lip and spoke with a slight tremor in her voice, "You really didn't die."
Xu Shaoji did not look at her tears; his face was expressionless as he cruelly said, "You've worked hard. I will take the child back to the the Gu Family."
"That is my..." Jiang Rou said urgently, wanting to reach out to stop him but hesitating and halting her movement.
"I will find her a new mother."
Xu Shaoji said harshly, his eyes filled with indifference. "You wouldn't want her to know that her mother is a woman who can be shared by anyone, would you?"
"I didn't!" Jiang Rou retorted loudly, her voice cracking as she began to tremble.
Xu Shaoji scoffed lightly and disdainfully remarked, "Then what about Qin Jianyu?"
Jiang Rou fell silent, simply gazing at the man she had once decided to rely on for life. Her face grew paler, devoid of any color, and her lips turned slightly white.
The guilty expression on Qin Jianyu's face made her realize everything at once. She let out a bitter laugh and looked at Xu Shaoji, slowly saying, "You did this on purpose."
Xu Shaoji seemed momentarily moved; he opened his mouth as a hint of regret flashed across his face. "… I thought you would withstand the test."
He knew that his mother had not fully accepted her; after several pleas, it was only then that his mother proposed such a test.
They brought in someone who resembled her first love, Qin Jianyu, hoping that if she remained unmoved, her mother would agree to bury the hatchet.
But now, caught in the act, the evidence was undeniable.
He wanted to believe it, yet he couldn't convince himself.
"Can you withstand the test?" Jiang Rou said with a mix of tears and laughter, her eyes filled with sorrow and anger. Her body swayed slightly. "When others have ill intentions, how can I endure?"
It felt as if all her strength had been drained away. Jiang Rou leaned against the doorframe, her body resting against it as if it were her only support. Her breath was faint: "You should take the child away."
Following her would likely mean a lifetime of suffering; despair and helplessness filled her gaze.
Xu Shaoji turned away without pausing for a moment, his steps hurried as he quickly walked away.
Jiang Rou fell gravely ill, lying in bed with a waxen complexion and weak breaths.
Qin Jianyu stayed by her side without leaving for a moment, taking care of her diligently. He wiped her sweat and offered her sips of water, his eyes filled with anxiety and concern.
When Jiang Rou finally woke up and slowly opened her eyes to see him still there, she couldn't help but feel a surge of frustration. She frowned slightly and weakly asked, "What are you still doing here?"
Their purpose had been fulfilled; she had lost—lost love, lost the child, and lost a lifetime—her heart was heavy with desolation and resentment.
"I'll take you away from here."
"Are you really going to leave me?" Qin Jianyu said firmly, looking at Jiang Rou with seriousness and determination in his eyes.
Jiang Rou paused for a moment, then scoffed, her laughter laced with sarcasm. "Do you really think you're Qin Yu?"
"I am," Qin Jianyu insisted. "I came back to take you away."
He had initially thought that if she were happy, he would leave on his own. But seeing her unhappiness filled him with guilt.
"If I had known it would come to this, why did you abandon me in the first place?"
She had once wondered if he was truly Qin Yu, but what difference did it make whether he was or not?
Jiang Rou gritted her teeth in anger, the sound echoing in the silence. She understood that his dreams were more important than her feelings and no longer wished for anything more. "Since you left me, don’t pretend to care! You don’t owe me anything; what you owe me can never be repaid in this lifetime!"
"I don’t want to see you again," she declared. After saying this, she closed her eyes, refusing to look at him any longer, her face set with determination.
Jiang Rou fell silent and stopped eating, growing thinner by the day. Her already frail body deteriorated further; the side effects of childbirth took a toll on her health, leaving her barely hanging on. No medicine seemed to help, and it felt as though she was just a breath away from fading away.
That winter brought the biggest snowfall of the year, snowflakes swirling down gently. She wearily closed her eyes, no longer needing to think about the past—happy moments, unhappy ones, joys and sorrows—all began to fade away as she surrendered to darkness.
Her body lay covered in white snow, as if bidding a final farewell to the world. When the snow melted away, no one would remember the stories of her past—the love and hatred she once experienced.
