Standing before you is Guo Shuang, a 23-year-old nurse who, along with her 18-year-old boyfriend, brutally murdered their superior and set fire to his car to destroy evidence.
On December 21, 2008, approved by the Supreme People's Court, Guo Shuang was sentenced to death.
It is both poignant and heartbreaking that just an hour before her execution, upon learning that her young boyfriend had been granted a reprieve from the death penalty, her previously expressionless face trembled slightly. Her eyes instantly filled with tears, overflowing as she wept with joy, choked up in emotion, her hands trembling involuntarily.
What could possibly lead a blossoming young woman and an innocent boy to be sentenced to such a fate?

The incident occurred on October 1, 2006.
Location: Zhengzhou, Henan Province.
That morning, a man taking a leisurely stroll in the outskirts suddenly spotted a bloodied figure lying in a nearby wasteland.
Curiosity piqued, he quickened his pace to investigate. To his horror, he discovered it was the body of a man. His face turned pale as he stumbled back in shock and quickly dialed the police with trembling fingers.
Upon receiving the report, the Zhengzhou police acted swiftly and arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.
The forensic expert wore a serious expression as he examined the body. He discovered that the victim's skull had been crushed by a blunt object and that there was a deep stab wound to the heart.
Strangely enough, the victim's wallet and other belongings were untouched, leaving the motive for the murder unclear.
However, the police found a wallet on the victim which contained business cards and identification confirming that he was Fang Mouzheng, the head of human resources at a certain First Affiliated Hospital.
Additionally, they discovered Fang's burned car in another area of wasteland.
It was clear that the murderer wanted to destroy the car and erase all traces after committing the crime, but the method of execution was riddled with flaws.
Through investigating Fang's social connections, the police quickly identified 23-year-old nurse Guo Shuang and her 18-year-old high school boyfriend Wang Zijian as suspects.
The police swiftly launched a capture operation. On a train bound for Tibet, officers hurriedly searched the compartments with sharp eyes, ultimately apprehending the two.
During the interrogation, Guo Shuang took full responsibility for the murder, her gaze resolute and her tone firm as she insisted that her boyfriend Wang Zijian had only agreed to participate in the killing under her constant instigation.
Wang Zijian also desperately tried to exonerate her, his face flushed as he attempted to shoulder all the blame himself.
However, various pieces of evidence indicated that this was a crime committed together by both of them. So what motives and reasons lay behind this murder?
In 2005, 22-year-old Guo Shuang graduated from a medical college in Henan.
Since she attended a vocational school and studied nursing, her qualifications were not very high, making it difficult for her to find suitable work in a big city like Zhengzhou.
Eventually, through a classmate's introduction, she managed to secure an assistant position in the human resources department of a certain First Affiliated Hospital in Zhengzhou.
Although this job was relatively easy, working in such an institution without formal employment meant her monthly salary was pitifully low, barely enough to make ends meet.
Watching her colleagues earn several times more than she did filled Guo Shuang with envy and resentment; she knew it was due to her lack of experience and qualifications.
Thus, in order to become a formal employee, she often used her spare time to study hard and gain experience, hoping to pass the hospital's assessment soon.
During this period, Guo Shuang's direct supervisor— Fang Mouzhao, the director of the hospital's human resources department—showed her exceptional care. He not only tolerated some of her daily mistakes but also smiled frequently while guiding her on how to improve her professional skills.
Guo Shuang felt immense gratitude for this and regarded Fang Mouzhao with great admiration; there was a sense of reverence in her gaze when she looked at him.
Unbeknownst to her, this man in his forties had already seen Guo Shuang as prey during her interview and was looking for the perfect opportunity to strike.
That opportunity soon presented itself.
On a day in February 2006, Fang Mouzhao enthusiastically invited his colleagues to his birthday party and suggested that they go out for karaoke and drinks afterward.
As a member of the Human Resources department, Guo Shuang also attended the birthday celebration.
However, during karaoke, her colleagues persistently urged her to drink.
Naive and inexperienced, Guo Shuang had no idea that this was all part of Fang Mouzhao's scheme. She hesitated, unable to refuse, and soon found herself intoxicated, collapsing onto the sofa.
Seeing Guo Shuang passed out, Fang Mouzhao immediately told his colleagues that as her superior, he had the responsibility to ensure she got home safely.
Little did anyone expect that Fang Mouzhao would take Guo Shuang back to his own home.
The next morning, when Guo Shuang woke up, she opened her eyes to find herself lying in bed with Fang Mouzhao.
At that moment, she felt an unprecedented sense of fear and despair. Her eyes widened in disbelief; she could not accept that the leader she had always admired could commit such a monstrous act.
Reflecting on Fang Mouzhao's special care for her and his seemingly concerned yet ambiguous glances, she finally understood that he was not a good leader at all; he was a demon with a human face and a beast's heart.
