Guo Shuang's cries jolted the sleeping Fang Mouzhao awake. He sat up in a panic, apologizing and trying to reason with her, claiming that he had been drunk the night before and that was why such things had happened.
Guo Shuang did not believe his words. Angrily, she stood up, pointing a finger at Fang Mouzhao and cursing him, threatening to call the police.
Upon hearing this, Fang Mouzhao fell into a state of panic. He hadn’t expected this young woman to care so much about her own dignity; his face turned pale.
As a Doctor of Medicine who had returned from studying in Colombia, Fang Mouzhao had built a flawless reputation at the hospital.
To prevent this incident from leaking out, he quickly devised a plan: he would use Guo Shuang's desire for a permanent position as leverage to coerce and bribe her.
Fang Mouzhao then promised Guo Shuang that if she didn’t report him, he would help her secure a formal position at the hospital and offered her various material compensations.
Upon hearing these promises, Guo Shuang lowered her head slightly, realizing that she wasn’t as resolute as she had imagined. The metaphorical glass wall had already been shattered; even if she reported him, she wouldn’t be able to regain her lost innocence.
In that case, it might be better to obtain some compensation instead.
After much contemplation, Guo Shuang gritted her teeth and agreed to Fang Mouzhao's terms.
Unbeknownst to her, this choice allowed Fang Mouzhao ’s scheme to succeed completely and laid the groundwork for the tragedy that would follow.
Since that night, Fang Mouzhao's attitude towards Guo Shuang became increasingly reckless.
He often used her desire for a permanent position as leverage, coercing her to come to his home with an authoritative tone. He was convinced that Guo Shuang was trapped in his grasp and could not resist him at all.
Guo Shuang’s behavior matched his expectations; even though she despised herself deeply, she wore a helpless expression and complied with his demands, becoming an outlet for his frustrations.
Gradually, Guo Shuang sensed something was off. Although Fang Mouzhao provided her with many material comforts, there was still no progress regarding her permanent position. In fact, colleagues who had joined three months after her were already granted permanent status.
When faced with Guo Shuang’s doubts, Fang Mouzhao casually remarked that as long as she obtained her nursing certification, she would be able to secure a permanent position.
However, after Guo Shuang dedicated significant effort to successfully obtain her nursing certification, Fang Mouzhao only assigned her to a position at the nurse's station.
Although her salary had significantly increased, Guo Shuang was still just a temporary worker, with no hope of becoming a permanent employee in sight.
At that moment, Guo Shuang finally understood that she was merely a plaything for Fang Mouzhao; all those so-called promises were nothing but lies.
However, it was too late to report it to the police; it would serve no purpose now.
Feeling disheartened, Guo Shuang began to vent her frustrations about the unfairness of the world online, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she expressed her dissatisfaction.
By chance, Guo Shuang met an 18-year-old boy named Wang Zijian online, a sophomore in high school.
The two hit it off remarkably well, and even through the screen, they could feel each other's enthusiasm. It wasn't long before they confirmed their romantic relationship and quickly transitioned from online to offline.
One day, while dining and drinking together, Guo Shuang hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided to share her experiences with him. She genuinely liked this boy and didn't want to deceive him.
Upon hearing the truth, the impetuous Wang Zijian slammed his chopsticks down on the table and immediately declared that he wanted to take revenge on Fang Mouzhao.
And thus, a tragedy unfolded.
On September 30, 2006, Guo Shuang drove Fang Mouzhao's car, took a deep breath, and made an excuse to lure him out.
Although Fang Mouzhao noticed Wang Zijian as soon as he got in the car, he let his guard down when Guo Shuang introduced Wang Zijian as her cousin.
Unbeknownst to him, Wang Zijian had already prepared a hammer and a dagger hidden behind him, ready to threaten Fang Mouzhao into giving Guo Shuang an explanation.
To their surprise, when faced with the threat, Fang Mouzhao dismissed them entirely and even shamelessly insulted Guo Shuang, claiming he never intended to help her become a permanent employee.
Hearing this, Guo Shuang's eyes reddened with anger, and in a fit of rage, she stabbed Fang Mouzhao.
Seeing Fang Mouzhao struggle desperately, Wang Zijian raised the hammer high and brought it down forcefully onto his head.
Due to their lack of experience, the two casually disposed of Fang Mouzhao's body in a desolate area after committing the crime.
To eliminate any traces from the vehicle, they drove Fang Mouzhao's small car to another remote location, took out gasoline, struck a match, and set it ablaze.
Two days later, in an attempt to evade capture, they decided to flee to Tibet. They packed light and hurried to the train station. However, as soon as they boarded the train, they were apprehended by the police.
On August 2, 2007, the Zhengzhou Intermediate People's Court sentenced Guo Shuang and Wang Zijian to death.
After the verdict, both expressed their dissatisfaction and appealed, each hoping for the other's reprieve, their eyes filled with concern and reluctance for one another.
In August 2008, the court upheld the original ruling. However, once the verdict was made public, it sparked widespread controversy.
The vast majority believed that Fang Mouzhao bore undeniable responsibility for the tragedy and that the two did not deserve the death penalty.
Shortly thereafter, the case was transferred to the Supreme Court.
After careful consideration, the Supreme Court commuted Wang Zijian's death sentence to a suspended death sentence while maintaining Guo Shuang's original sentence as the instigator of the crime.
On December 21, 2008, just an hour before being taken to execution, Guo Shuang wept tears of joy upon learning that Wang Zijian's sentence had been commuted.
She murmured to herself, "He says he still genuinely likes me. He also said that it's not me who owes him; he could have made his own choices throughout this process. We just underestimated our ignorance of the law."
