My main task now is to nurture the male lead and help him become an outstanding Grand Marshal in the future. To achieve this, I scour for talent everywhere, bringing them to the mansion for my own use.
For instance, there's a seasoned Veteran with extensive combat experience who is responsible for tending to the flowers and plants in the General's Mansion, living right next door to the male lead. Then there's a retired teacher fluent in several foreign languages who handles grocery shopping and cooking, and can also teach the male lead some foreign languages. Additionally, there's an exceptionally skilled doctor who takes care of the animals in the General's Mansion and can teach the male lead a bit about medicine as well.
Besides all this, I need to keep a close eye on the male lead's growth. So, I visit the Stable every day.
Today, I found him grooming a horse. The rain had stopped, and the sky was a brilliant blue. The young man was dressed in a coarse gray outfit, sleeves rolled up, diligently brushing the horse's coat. Sunlight glinted off his hair and eyelashes. His expression was cold and resolute; his profile was as refined as jade, exuding a clean and pure aura.
He had changed significantly since I rescued him. Previously, he had been dirty and thin, a small bundle that looked like an unweaned child. Now, he had grown taller and stronger, his demeanor becoming more composed. Though only eighteen, he already bore a faint resemblance to a future warlord.
As I watched him, an unexpected wave of anxiety washed over me. Truly, he was the male lead—his aura and looks were simply extraordinary. If he grew up to charm young ladies, wouldn’t he be irresistible?
No, no! I must crush that possibility!
"You, come here."
I pointed at him, lifting my chin in a commanding manner. The young man set down the brush and walked over at a leisurely pace.
"Miss," he said, his head bowed, his eyes quietly fixed on the ground.
"Were you just sneaking a glance at me?" I crossed my arms, feeling quite superior.
"No," he replied calmly.
"Nonsense! You were clearly staring at me!" I raised my chin, deliberately looking for a fight. "Go fetch me the riding whip!"
"Miss, isn't the whip right in your hand?" His tone was nonchalant, and there seemed to be a hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth.
I looked down and realized, oh dear, how did I end up holding it?
"I want to change the strap!"
"Alright."
He looked up and smiled at me, his dark eyes curving slightly like crescent moons.
How infuriating! Not only was he good-looking, but he also smiled so charmingly! How am I supposed to get angry at him?
I gritted my teeth in frustration and couldn't help but sigh. "You can go now."
"Yes."
He lowered his gaze in acknowledgment and returned to grooming the horse with the brush. I watched his retreating figure, lost in thought.
Why can't I ever be angry with him? Why?
How frustrating.
In my memory, there isn't much description of the female lead in the novel. I vaguely remember that she is the youngest daughter of the the Su Family, clever and kind-hearted. When the male lead was down on his luck, she stood by him, comforting and encouraging him, helping him through his troubles. Later, when he became successful, he married her. The two of them treated each other with respect and became a model couple in high society.
Well, whatever. It has nothing to do with me. Anyway, once I retire, they can do as they please. But since I've crossed over into this book, I might as well meet the female lead. I want to see just how clever, kind, and lovely she really is.
"Zhi Xia."
"Yes."
Zhi Xia is my personal maid whom I requested from my father; she understands me best.
"Go find all the matchmakers in the city."
"Miss, what do you need them for?"
"I want to buy a girl."
According to the novel's setting, the female lead should have already been sold along with her family to Nanyang by now, right? Sure enough, Zhi Xia brought back seven or eight matchmakers.
