With a flick of his hand, Gao Zhai paused momentarily, and the Royal Guards in the room stepped back in unison, quickly exiting until only the three of us remained. The atmosphere was so oppressive it felt hard to breathe. 0

He stepped forward, his movements slow and heavy, his gaze fixed on me, filled with worry and urgency. 0

"Chaoge, look at him. Do you see even a trace of yourself in his blood-red eyes?" he said, glaring coldly at Gao Shuo, his hatred intensifying. 0

"At this moment, my Royal Guard should have arrived at your camp outside the city, carrying the blood edict I personally wrote. Anyone who surrenders will not be held accountable. Gao Shuo, you have lost." 0

"Is that so? If I have lost, then why don't you send someone to stab me with a sword right now? What are you afraid of?" Gao Shuo laughed loudly, a pride I had never seen before on his face. He threw his head back and laughed wildly, tightening his grip around my throat even more. I struggled to breathe, my face turning red from the pressure. 0

"You have no interest in governance; why not give up the throne? After all, what you've always wanted is her, isn't it?" 0

"You are my last trump card," he replied with a smile, his gaze shifting to Gao Zhai, calculating. "As your royal brother, I have never cared for anything since childhood, yet I am strangely fixated on you. I'm merely leaving myself an escape route; if the rebellion fails in the future, I will still have leverage." 0

Gao Zhai's face turned pale with rage, his eyes filled with murderous intent as he clenched his fists tightly, veins bulging on the back of his hands, his body trembling slightly with anger. Gao Shuo continued, "So tell me—will you give up the throne or not?" 0

"Gao Shuo, did you ever love me?" I murmured softly, but the response was suffocating silence; all that could be heard was our breathing. 0

Tears suddenly streamed down my face uncontrollably, blurring my vision. 0

The night was deepening, and the poison of Moonlight Powder began to take effect again. It felt as if countless needles were stabbing inside me; yet that piercing pain seemed insignificant compared to the anguish in my heart. 0

I closed my eyes and steeled myself. With all my might, I lunged toward the blade. My body leaned forward sharply as the edge pierced my throat. Crimson blood gushed out and flowed down my neck, staining my clothes red. 0

Gao Shuo panicked, his grip loosening suddenly, his face filled with alarm as the dagger clattered to the ground. 0

Gao Zhai rushed forward, catching me as I began to fall. He held me tightly in his arms, and with his other hand, he swiftly drew his longsword from his waist. With a swift motion, the blade flashed through the air and pierced Gao Shuo's chest, burying itself deep. 0

"Chaoge! Chaoge! You can't die... Why are you being so foolish?" Gao Zhai shouted, his voice choked with tears and his eyes reddening. I struggled with all my might to break free from his hold, my weak body crawling toward Gao Shuo, my fingers digging into the ground and leaving trails of blood behind. 0

"I told you, if Gao Shuo dies, Chaoge will never live on." I leaned over Gao Shuo's chest, watching as he slowly closed his eyes, his expression gradually calming. My trembling hand reached out to touch his face but fell helplessly in midair. 0

"I won't allow you to die. You belong to me; even in death, you must die in my arms!" Gao Zhai declared, pulling me tightly against him as if trying to meld me into his body. "Gao Shuo never loved you; he deceived me and deceived you..." 0

I felt darkness closing in, the last bit of strength slipping away. My eyelids grew heavier as I closed my eyes and whispered, "I'm sorry, Gao Zhai. If there is a next life..." My voice was barely audible. 0

"I don't want a next life!" he yelled, holding me even tighter as if that could keep me from leaving. Tears streamed down his face onto mine. 0

"But I... only have a next life left..." 0

As I spoke, a light seemed to appear before me. Gao Shuo stood ahead, smiling gently and reaching out to me just as he had in the past. I smiled back and moved toward him; my body felt lighter as the white light filled the sky, ultimately engulfing everything. My consciousness began to fade. 0

"Chaoge, if I had met you first back then, would you...?" 0

"No. Gao Shuo would make me happy; he would give me wooden carvings and write poetry for me... everything was something I liked. And what about you? Besides using your status to impose on others, what else can you do?" 0

"Gao Zhai, do you like Chaoge? During morning classes, I saw you secretly carving wooden sculptures; were they meant for Chaoge?" 0

"That's not true." 0

"Hehe, don't deny it. Didn't you go out in the middle of the night to collect morning dew for her and steep tea leaves all night? You were planning to give it to Chaoge, weren't you?" 0

"No, she completely ignores me. Even if I gave it to her, she wouldn't accept it. But since I've been studying under the Grand Tutor for the past few years and I'm quite familiar with Chaoge, maybe if I give it to her on your behalf, she might accept it." 0
