Jiang Xincheng wore a curious expression as he glanced at Zhao Ming'er, then at Gu Jin'en and He Hanchen.
"Jin'en, how did you end up coming with He Hanchen?" Zhang Xiuqin leaned in close to Gu Jin'en, her tone slightly teasing.
"It's a long story, just a coincidence, nothing to worry about," Gu Jin'en replied.
"Hey, look at you, Gu Jin'en, trying to sound all literary and profound," Zhang Xiuqin said, deflated like a punctured balloon since she hadn’t gotten any gossip.
Jiang Xincheng was more straightforward, casually resting his hand on He Hanchen's shoulder. "Come on, spill it. What's going on?"
"Nothing to disclose," He Hanchen shot a "friendly" glance at Jiang Xincheng, his demeanor as sharp as a cold blade cutting through the desolate path, causing the surrounding foliage to retreat.
"Classmates, let me say a few words," the class monitor Lin Ziqi spoke up first. "Tonight is our sophomore class's ice-breaking event. We're not doing the usual activities from previous years—no poetry games or intense quiz battles. Just have fun! There will be music, games, and food stations. Enjoy yourselves!"
"It ends at eleven-thirty, so take it easy," Zhang Xiuqin added with an arched eyebrow.
After a round of applause, everyone dispersed.
Although it was a new class, everyone had moved up from Shanghe High School's first year. The newly formed innovative Class Two consisted of top students from various classes. He Hanchen, Lin Ziqi, and Jiang Xincheng were originally from Sophomore Class One; Zhao Xiuqin was from Class Three of the first year; Zhao Ming'er and Pang Yu were from Class Nine; the only exception was Gu Jin'en, who had been in the international class at Aoweihigh School during her first year and had just transferred to Shanghe High School this year.
"Jin'en, why did you want to transfer to Shanghe?"
"Yeah, I heard Aoweih's faculty is much better than Shanghe's."
"I heard your brother is Gu Lang, the student council president!"
Gu Jin'en had just made a name for herself in the class placement exam, so her new classmates were naturally curious about her.
While Gu Jin'en and Zhang Xiuqin were happily chatting with their new classmates, a sudden commotion erupted in the distance.
Zhang Xiuqin grabbed Gu Jin'en's hand and pulled her toward the crowd.
It turned out that Zhao Ming'er was confessing to He Hanchen. She wore a crystal spaghetti strap dress and had her hair styled in a fluffy bun with two curled strands framing her face. Her eyebrows and eyes were adorned with makeup that complemented her youthful orange-red lips—clearly someone who had put effort into her appearance, and it showed; she looked strikingly radiant.
Zhao Ming'er held a handwritten letter in both hands, beneath which lay a black vinyl record.
"Impressive, Brother Chen's preferences are well-known," Lin Ziqi whispered from the edge of the crowd.
Jiang Xincheng replied proudly, "Hehe, Zhao Ming'er asked me about it. With three limited edition skins, how could I refuse?"
"Be careful, Brother Chen might come after you!" Lin Ziqi scoffed at Jiang Xincheng.
"He Hanchen, I know that to you, I might just be a stranger, but to me, you are the light that illuminates my path. Now that we are closer, may I walk alongside you with this light?" Zhao Ming'er gazed affectionately at He Hanchen, who had been pushed out of the crowd by Jiang Xincheng.
"If you believe we can transcend the ordinary relationship of classmates, please accept this handwritten letter and your 17th birthday gift."
"I didn't tell her Brother Chen's birthday is next week; I'm impressed," Jiang Xincheng muttered in disbelief.
The timing, the place, and the onlookers seemed perfectly aligned, creating a romantic atmosphere all its own.
Zhao Ming'er was almost ready to rush toward He Hanchen, raising her glass with him to the crowd.
"Thank you for your kind intentions, but I have no desire," He Hanchen took a small step back and slightly bowed to Zhao Ming'er.
"No one can be the light that guides your path; only you can be your own light." With that, He Hanchen turned and walked away, brushing past Gu Jin'en as he headed toward the concert venue. Gu Jin'en seemed to notice He Hanchen's gaze lingering on him for a moment.
A very dignified rejection.
Seeing this, Lin Ziqi and Jiang Xincheng quickly followed in He Hanchen's direction.
The crowd dispersed amidst growing murmurs of surprise.
"You see, her makeup is all smudged from crying," Zhang Xiuqin said, looking at Zhao Ming'er, who stood frozen in place, lost in her thoughts.
Gu Jin'en glanced at He Hanchen in the distance—or rather, they exchanged a look. Hearing Zhang Xiuqin's words, she turned back to Zhao Ming'er.
"At least she's brave enough to openly express her feelings for someone she likes."
"Well, you didn't see her before—" Zhang Xiuqin retorted angrily upon hearing Gu Jin'en's comment. "But speaking of which," she changed the subject, "do you have some special connection with that guy named He?" She asked in a tone only she and Gu Jin'en could hear.
"Xiuqin, please don't misunderstand," Gu Jin'en replied as she turned toward the food table, picking up a cocktail and taking a small sip.
"My stubborn little mule!" Zhang Xiuqin shrugged helplessly and hurried to sit down next to Gu Jin'en.
"Hey, you two, want to play some music?"
Following the voice, Lin Ziqi smiled and called out to Jiang Xiuqin and Gu Jin'en.
Gu Jin'en paused for a moment because behind Lin Ziqi, He Hanchen was gazing at her with an enigmatic expression. This look was different from the glances they had exchanged earlier that day.
