A lazy voice came through, "Hey! Hello, is this the doctors?"
Eileen said nervously, "Hurry! Come pick us up!"
Muto chuckled, "Ha! What's wrong? Did you encounter something terrifying?"
Eileen shouted angrily, "Hurry up! You greedy bastard! I'll pay you whatever you want!"
Muto sneered, "Ha! For that line, I..."
Suddenly, the call was interrupted by static and then cut off. Eileen stared at her phone, filled with helplessness and anxiety. She shoved the phone back into her backpack and turned to Lisa, saying, "We need to find a safe place and wait for Muto to pick us up."
Lisa nodded, anxiously looking around, "Let's get out of here and find somewhere hidden."
The two quickly crossed the small courtyard and entered another dilapidated building. The walls were covered in moss, and the air was thick with a decaying smell. They carefully avoided the rubble and trash on the ground as they moved along the narrow corridor.
"We have to avoid the townspeople; they must be searching for us like crazy," Eileen whispered. "We need to keep a low profile until an opportunity arises."
Lisa agreed with a nod, still filled with worry. "Will Muto arrive on time? Can we escape safely?"
"We have no choice," Eileen replied firmly. "We will make it."
The two cautiously made their way through the town, where the streets felt eerily empty. For some reason, it seemed that no one was in sight. In the distance, however, the church echoed with loud sounds as if everyone had gathered in that direction.
Lisa whispered, "What about Mark... what do we do about him?"
Eileen and Lisa stopped in their tracks, hiding behind a wooden crate. Eileen furrowed her brow, filled with conflict and anxiety. She whispered back, "Mark seems completely enchanted now, but he’s our friend; we can’t just leave him behind."
A flicker of concern crossed Lisa's eyes. "But the Mark we knew isn’t who he is anymore; he looks completely brainwashed."
Eileen took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She knew that no matter how difficult it was, they couldn't abandon Mark. "We need to find a way to save him; maybe we can discover a way to bring him back to his senses."
Lisa nodded. Although she was filled with worry, she trusted Eileen's decision. "Let's figure out how to get closer to the church and see if we can find any clues."
Erin looked around to ensure there was no immediate danger before saying to Lisa, "We need to keep a low profile and avoid drawing attention. We'll make our plans once we reach the church."
The two of them cautiously moved forward, slowly approaching the church along the street. The sounds from the church grew louder in the distance, as if a grand ceremony was taking place. They hid in the shadows, careful not to be spotted by the townspeople.
"We need to find a safe way into the church," Erin whispered as they quietly approached the entrance. They saw several townsfolk standing guard at the door, their eyes filled with madness and fervor. Erin frowned for a moment, realizing that the main entrance was not an option. She turned to Lisa and said softly, "We need to find another way."
They stealthily moved to the side, reaching the right side of the church. Erin noticed a wooden window on the second floor and vaguely remembered some shelves nearby that could lead to the back of the church. She pointed at the window and said to Lisa, "Look at that window; I remember there are some shelves that we can climb up."
Lisa nodded, understanding Erin's intention. She leaned against the wall, extending her hand for Erin to step onto her shoulder. Erin carefully placed her foot on Lisa's shoulder, feeling her support and stability. With a determined effort, she pried open the window, relieved that it wasn't locked. Taking a deep breath, Erin concentrated all her strength and jumped up, her muscles tensing as she pulled herself inside.
"I made it," Erin whispered to Lisa, "I'll pull you up."
Lisa nodded, and Erin reached out her hand to help Lisa climb through the window. Lisa grasped Erin's hand and struggled to pull herself up. The two entered the second floor of the church, which was darker and more ominous than they had imagined. Old tapestries hung on the walls, thick dust covered the floor, and a musty smell filled the air.
"We need to be careful," Erin said quietly. "Every corner here could hide danger."
They quietly advanced along the second-floor corridor, trying to find a way down. Erin recalled some shelves she had seen before that might lead to the back of the church. The two remained silent, nervously observing their surroundings, with only their own breathing and heartbeats echoing in their ears.
At the end of the corridor appeared a dimly lit corner. Lisa pointed ahead and said, "There are stairs over there; we can go down from there."
Erin nodded as they cautiously approached the stairs. The staircase was old and narrow, with wooden boards creaking slightly underfoot as if they might collapse at any moment. They descended step by step with utmost care.
"This place is really creepy," Lisa whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
Erin squeezed Lisa's hand for comfort and courage. "We'll definitely find Mark and then get out of here."
Finally reaching the back of the church, they found an even stranger atmosphere. The walls were etched with ancient symbols, and broken statues and debris littered the ground.
Even at the back of the church, they could still hear singing coming from the main hall—melodic hymns that were hauntingly beautiful, filling the air with an eerie ambiance. They moved quietly forward, avoiding potential witnesses until they reached a dim corner.
Suddenly, Erin and Lisa spotted a familiar figure sitting at a wooden table, diligently making some modifications to something. The candlelight illuminated her face—it was Sophia Esteban. Erin's heart raced as she quickly pulled Lisa into hiding so they could quietly observe what Sophia Esteban was doing.
Sophia Esteban was scribbling away with a feather quill in several heavy notebooks. Her movements were hurried and anxious, and there was a hint of tension in her eyes. Erin noticed that Sophia occasionally glanced around, ensuring she wasn’t being watched.
"What is she doing?" Lisa whispered.
Erin replied softly, "It looks like she's making some edits, probably to their important records."
Suddenly, Sophia stood up and retrieved some papers and notebooks from a box on the table. She placed them on a metal tray and then struck a match. The flame quickly spread as Sophia set the tray down on the table, watching the fire consume the notes.
"She's destroying evidence!" Erin exclaimed in astonishment.
Lisa frowned. "We need to know what she's burning; it could be key to uncovering the truth."
Erin nodded in agreement with Lisa's assessment. They cautiously moved closer to Sophia, trying to catch a glimpse of the notes being incinerated. The flames illuminated Sophia's face, her expression remaining stern and focused, with a glimmer of determination in her eyes.
"She doesn’t want us to see this," Erin whispered. "That means there must be crucial information in those notes."
Lisa leaned closer to Erin's ear. "We need to find the notes she hasn’t had time to burn yet."
Erin nodded, her gaze fixed intently on every move Sophia made. Sophia continued to add more papers to the tray, the flames growing fiercer. Their hearts raced as they realized time was running out; they needed to act quickly.
Erin and Lisa quietly shifted their positions, trying to get closer to Sophia. Just then, Sophia suddenly turned around, seemingly sensing someone approaching.
