Until that day, I had come across a trending video that showcased a government document. It turned out that my brother-in-law's family, who had previously earned a relocation house in the school district, was now being removed from the school district. "Help them? How? Help with what?" I shot back.
Li Jingzhang hesitated for a long time before saying, "Jingjing is about to enter middle school, but since my brother's house is no longer in the school district, her grades might not be good enough..."
I interrupted him bluntly, "What do you mean 'might not be'? The house is something they should earn themselves. Your dad wants to give it to them; poor grades aren't because she doesn't want to study—your brother's wife spoils her rotten! What does this have to do with me?"
That house was something they had conspired to take from us. Now they wanted to scheme against me again? How ridiculous.
"Honey, keep your voice down; Dad might hear. Please don't get angry. My brother really has no choice, and Dad said they're struggling right now. We should help them out. Once their situation improves, they'll help us too."
Li Jingzhang whispered timidly in my ear. After he finished speaking, I stood up in anger and thrust my hand in front of him, saying, "Struggling? What struggles do they have? Wearing designer clothes, driving luxury cars, flaunting expensive watches—your sister-in-law must have spent a fortune on that face of hers! Look at my hands; they're rough enough to scrape skin off! I have a decent job as a supermarket manager making nearly ten thousand a month. When Dad got sick and you said I should take care of him so he wouldn't feel neglected, I quit without hesitation and ran between home and the hospital every day. Now that Dad is better, I'm back out looking for work. If I can't find anything, I'll wash vegetables and dishes at a restaurant because our son needs money too; we can't let things fall apart at home! "Honey, don't say it like that; we're all family and should help each other..."
Li Jingzhang reached out to pull me back down but I forcefully swatted his hand away. "Li Jingzhang, let me tell you this: I'm the one who put up most of the money for that house. You two can’t just think you can use it as leverage; give up on that idea."
Li Jingzhang suddenly became anxious. "Honey, how can you say that? My brother really needs help right now! We're family; how can you just stand by and watch them suffer?"
"Stand by and watch them die? When did they ever die? Besides, why should we save them? This house is ours; what reason do we have to give it to them?"
