I was assigned to a secluded courtyard. The environment, though tranquil, exuded a sense of indifference. Young Master Lang was still busy with his affairs, only coming to talk to me in the evenings.
He would chat with me, sharing stories from his childhood and introducing me to interesting people. Yet, for some reason, I felt his figure becoming increasingly blurred. Sometimes, his gaze held a complex emotion; it seemed he had something to say to me but hesitated.
I recalled our days in the mountains when he relied on me like a helpless child. His initial panic and innocent eyes, along with his kindness and gentleness towards Grandma, contrasted sharply with the air of superiority that now slipped into our conversations, the disdainful expressions and condescending tone. It was as if he were two different people, making it hard for me to see him clearly.
One day, while sitting in the corridor lost in thought, I inadvertently overheard the maids discussing me as they swept the yard.
"It's strange; the young master actually has an interest in a courtesan and even says he wants to marry her."
"Hey! I heard she was sold to the gambling house by her own brother to pay off debts and then sold to a brothel."
"Don't say that; this peasant girl has some looks, but what kind of woman hasn't the young master seen? Why would he be interested in her?"
"Looks? She can't compare to Miss Lin. I heard the master wants the young master to marry into the Lin family, the biggest cloth merchant in town, but he doesn't like her."
"The young master is ruthless in his dealings; he's full of schemes in business. This woman is alone and has no family support—she's perfect for him to manipulate."
"I heard that neither the master nor the lady has ever summoned her; they probably disapprove of her. Even if she enters the household, she won't have a good life."
"A peasant girl with such a low status—if the young master likes her, it's her good fortune."
Another maid sneered, "Low status? With the young master's temperament, would he really be interested in someone like her? I think there's more to it."
The maids' voices faded into the distance, and I could no longer hear what they said afterward. I sat there in a daze, my heart churning like a stormy sea.
I remembered how indifferent he had been when he first rescued me, even deliberately avoiding me with such coldness. Then suddenly, he changed completely towards me. Could it really be as those maids said—did he have ulterior motives?
I recalled his gentle words and intimate gestures, suddenly feeling that it was all a bit too perfect. Everything felt staged, so unreal. A wave of indescribable loss and sadness surged within me, and tears flowed down my cheeks uncontrollably. I lay in bed, troubled, and only managed to fall asleep at dawn.
The next day, after lunch, I went to meet the Lang Family's parents. Before I could say anything, Madam Lang cast a dismissive glance my way and spoke with a hint of disdain, "You saved my son. Naturally, our family will not treat you poorly. So tell me, what do you want?"
I bit my lip, gathering my thoughts as I said, "I know my humble status does not match with Young Master Lang, and I never aspired to climb the social ladder of the Lang Family. However, I do have one request." Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I looked directly at them and continued, "I would like to ask Lord and Lady Lang to arrange for me to have a Female Scholar. Once matters concerning Master Lang are settled, I will leave without overstaying my welcome."
Education has always been something I desired; now that I had the opportunity, I wanted to plan for the future. "I saved Young Master Lang not to extort favors or seek marriage into the Lang Family. I simply hope that Lord Lang and Lady Lang can grant me this chance to study in light of this kindness."
Having said all this in one breath, I felt much lighter inside. The Lang Family's parents exchanged glances, clearly taken aback by my unexpected request.
