I groggily responded, faintly sensing her kiss on my forehead.
When I finally woke up, the sun high in the sky, I found myself watching a news report about Zhou Shiwan's search for her roots. Zhou Shiwan's expression was as stiff as a piece of wood. Yet the reporter commented, "From Miss Zhou's demeanor, we can sense her deep emotional connection to this journey of discovery."
It was laughable; this young lady had probably never set foot in such a humble place and was likely still trying to process it all. Her biological parents lived in a dilapidated rural house surrounded by low bungalows. In the yard, a flock of poultry clucked noisily.
Clearly, Miss Zhou had never visited such a place before; her expensive designer clothes clashed starkly with her surroundings. She frowned at the camera and said, "Stop filming."
Her father interjected, "Silly girl, being on TV can make money."
The camera then shifted to Lin Ziping standing nearby, his smile more painful than a frown. Zhou Shiwan's mother held his hand and said, "This is my daughter's partner; he's so handsome and doesn't mind our family's poverty—what a good kid."
Zhou Shiwan immediately replied, "Zi Ping truly doesn't care about these things, but I have the means to provide him with the best life and will never let him suffer even the slightest grievance."
Upon hearing this, Lin Ziping's expression relaxed slightly: "What I love is Zhou Shiwan as a person; I don't care about her family background."
At that moment, the program's narrator commented that Zhou Shiwan was "young and accomplished," while Lin Ziping was "a rare pure-hearted boy in this materialistic era."
Hearing this made both my father-in-law and me chuckle. Zhou Shiwan's luxury cars and mansions, along with those credit cards, were all part of the Zhou family's assets. She still thought of herself as a young lady born with a silver spoon in her mouth, unaware that I had already reclaimed her properties, vehicles, bank cards, and the subsidiary she managed. The only thing left was the Porsche she was currently using, which I hadn't had time to retrieve yet.
My father-in-law said with an easy smile:
"Fortunately, they aren't my biological children; otherwise, I would have to kick this useless thing out the door. After all these years of effort and investment, I ended up raising such a prodigal."
After marrying Jiang Mingyue, the Zhou family gifted us a luxurious villa in the city center, surrounded by a tranquil yet convenient environment.
As Jiang Mingyue and I arrived at the villa's entrance, we spotted two familiar figures standing there—none other than the self-important Zhou Shiwan and her little boyfriend.
I got out of the car and walked over with Jiang Mingyue.
"May I ask what you two are doing here?"
Lin Ziping hid behind Zhou Shiwan, looking frightened.
Seeing this, Zhou Shiwan's protective instincts kicked in: "This villa was gifted to me by my mother. Why are you two here?"
At that moment, the butler approached us respectfully and said, "Sir, Miss, welcome home."
Before I could speak, Zhou Shiwan grabbed Lin Ziping and tried to barge inside.
The butler immediately stopped them: "Miss, please do not enter someone else's residence without permission."
"Old Li, have you lost your mind? This villa is mine; I was just here a few days ago! Are you trying to lose your job?"
"Miss Zhou, this property has changed ownership, and the locks have been replaced. If you insist on entering, it would be considered trespassing. Furthermore, you no longer have the authority to decide my employment."
Jiang Mingyue coldly concluded her statement and turned to the butler, saying, "Well done. I'll make sure to give you a raise later."
Zhou Shiwan had been spoiled since childhood, and the people around her treated her with utmost respect, leading her to mistakenly believe she was truly remarkable.
