After confirming several times, I dialed Lin Jinhe's number, but there was no answer.
Frowning, I grabbed my car keys and strode out of the office.
Standing at Lin Jinhe's doorstep, I rang the doorbell.
After a long wait with no response, I hesitated for a moment before starting to input the password.
I had arranged everything for Lin Jinhe.
I introduced her to this apartment when she had just started to gain some fame. The location was private—more importantly, the developer was an acquaintance of mine who offered a significant discount.
On the day we set the password, I asked her what she wanted to use. She casually replied, "Anything's fine."
I half-jokingly suggested, "How about using my birthday? That way, every time you enter the password, you'll think of me and remember to thank your benefactor."
She laughed and nodded, and that password has been in use ever since.
I entered my birthday, and the door opened with a click.
I knocked again, giving Lin Jinhe enough time to prepare herself.
No matter what situation she was in, she should have tidied up by now.
As I pushed the door open, I was surprised to find that Lin Jinhe was not home.
In the center of the living room stood a man wearing Lin Jinhe's shirt, revealing his muscular calves, looking at me with a panicked expression.
It was Zhao Shusen.
I stood at the entrance and asked in a low voice, "Where is Lin Jinhe?"
Zhao Shusen hesitated as he sized me up, his tone laced with caution: "Who are you?"
I didn’t respond and walked straight toward the shoe cabinet. Noticing my slippers were missing, I looked up and saw them on Zhao Shusen's feet.
I kept my thoughts to myself and silently bid farewell in my mind. I have always been a neat freak; I would never touch something someone else has used.
Suppressing the turmoil within me, I smiled and introduced myself: "Hello, I'm Lin Jinhe's manager and also her boyfriend. Can you tell me where she went?"
My relationship with Lin Jinhe began a year ago.
I had never hidden my admiration for her, and she was well aware of it; we just kept it unspoken between us.
It was two years ago when her career began to take off that I accompanied her to negotiate a sponsorship deal. After several rounds of drinks, I forced myself to keep the conversation lively until we finally sent the client off, at which point I could no longer hold on.
Lin Jinhe took me home and stayed by my bedside to care for me. In my hazy state, I heard her sigh softly, “Xie Xingyun, you work too hard.”
Lin Jinhe was always cold and reserved, rarely speaking; this was the first time I had heard her use such a tone. I couldn't help but laugh.
In this industry, I was considered a legend. Starting as an assistant, I had climbed step by step to the position of a top agent. Though young, I handled matters with finesse and had never given anyone a reason to gossip about me.
Seeing me smile, she offered a faint smile in return. I opened my eyes to look at her and teased half-seriously, “If I don’t work hard, how can I elevate you to greatness?”
She paused for a moment before softly saying, “Xie Xingyun, meeting you is my fortune.”
This was the first time she had thanked me. After that, we shared an unspoken understanding; perhaps the timing was right, and we ended up together just like that.
We were both adults with needs, spending every day together. As the saying goes, those who live close to water can catch the moon first.
Seven years later, I finally reached for the moon I had admired in my youth. At this moment, looking at Zhao Shusen’s pale face caused by my words, I absentmindedly thought that my moon also had its own moon.
I wondered if it was time for me to step back now that I had achieved success.
When Lin Jinhe returned, I was sitting comfortably sipping tea. Zhao Shusen stood nervously by the opposite sofa, looking pale and distressed, his eyes red-rimmed as if he had suffered a great injustice.
