**Chapter Three**
"What kind of performance is that? Are you made of wood?" The teacher's merciless voice exploded in my ear.
My face instantly turned crimson as I lowered my head, feeling utterly dejected. Laughter erupted around me.
"Cui Jie said, 'It's okay, the class needs to pair up for practice. Starting tomorrow, I'll partner with you.'"
Looking into her bright eyes, clear as a lake and sparkling like stars, my heart soared among the constellations.
"Hey, where do you get the confidence? You actually let Cui Jie partner with him? That's like a toad wanting to eat swan meat."
I was blocked at the entrance of the training class.
"Exactly, giving such a hopeless loser as a partner."
"Brother Hao is the chosen male lead of our class; I really don't know what Cui Jie is thinking."
Liang Hao sat in his seat, disdainfully saying, "Mud will never stick to the wall."
I suppressed my anger and tried to sidestep inside, but was blocked again.
"Damn it, are you looking for trouble?" My fury surged as I pushed the person in front of me.
Seeing me make a move, others immediately surrounded me, taking advantage of their numbers.
After taking a couple of punches, I retaliated fiercely, knocking down the first two who charged at me. But then I saw someone rushing at me with a chair...
"Enough... If anyone else throws a punch, don't blame me for telling Director Zhang to cancel your training qualifications."
A sharp reprimand silenced the scene.
Cui Jie pushed through the crowd and pulled me out of the training room.
Cui Jie scolded, "You're here to learn, not to fight. Don't let me or Director Zhang down."
I angrily punched the wall.
After that incident, those who looked down on me knew I was trouble; they could only talk behind my back and dared not say it openly.
This actually gave me some peace and quiet, allowing me to focus on practicing scenes with Cui Jie.
Under Cui Jie's guidance, my acting skills improved rapidly. Gradually, our chemistry grew stronger; we could understand each other’s cues with just a glance or a gesture.
Six months later, we officially graduated and began taking on roles. And I finally earned my first bucket of gold in life.
After clearing the debts left by my gambling father, I found myself thinking about how to pursue Cui Jie. But no matter how much I pondered, I couldn't figure out how to break the ice. Facing Cui Jie's pure gaze, I felt as if I was plotting something sordid.
Cao Feng, that guy, acted like a wooden block in front of girls and kept coming up with terrible ideas. He suggested that I find an excuse to walk her home. In the end, I was at a loss for words and could only follow her, nearly being mistaken for a stalker. When he told me to ask her out for dinner, I ended up leaving my wallet in the taxi. He also suggested sending her flowers, but I was too shy to give them to her in person and ended up sneaking them into her dressing room. Unfortunately, I delivered them to the wrong place, leading Xu Yingying, another actress from our group, to misunderstand and think I was pursuing her.
Finally, it was her birthday. After much deliberation, I bought a hairpin as a gift. However, at the end of the corridor in the makeup room of the film crew, I saw Liang Hao hugging Cui Jie. They were acting intimately, whispering things I couldn't hear. A wave of dizziness washed over me, making it hard to stand. An indescribable feeling began to spread within my heart as I watched their affectionate embrace from a distance.
I turned away in despair; although the corridor wasn't long, it felt like an eternity as I walked... "So it turns out they are a perfect match," I thought bitterly.
" Hua, what's wrong? Why are you standing here lost in thought?" Cui Jie's voice came from behind me.
Then Cui Jie and Liang Hao came into view. I quickly turned my back, tightly gripping the hairpin in my hand. Cui Jie looked puzzled while Liang Hao's eyes held a hint of disdain and provocation.
"It's nothing; I'm just thinking," I replied hurriedly before leaving.
...
**Chapter Four**
In the following days, every time I saw Cui Jie, an uncomfortable feeling washed over me, prompting me to deliberately avoid her.
First Scene Third Segment, Begin.
With the director's command, I was quickly pulled into the air by the Wires. I leaped in mid-air, drawing my sword, and struck down at Liang Hao on the ground with a heavy blow.
"Don't..." A piercing scream echoed as Cui Jie lunged at me with her sword. Suddenly, I heard a sharp "crack," and Cui Jie’s Wires snapped, sending her crashing toward me uncontrollably. I hurriedly reached out to catch her, but the impact and inertia sent me flying, and then there was a loud "bang" before everything went dark.
...
When I woke up, I found myself lying in a hospital bed. My body felt like it was falling apart, especially my left shoulder, which throbbed with a tearing pain, and my head was pounding.
"You're awake?" Two voices, one male and one female, came from either side of me simultaneously. I looked around in confusion. Cui Jie and Cao Feng stood beside me.
"Uh, it's nothing serious. The doctor checked you; you have a bump on your head but no bruising, and there's a slight fracture in your left leg. You'll need some time to recover," Cao Feng said as he adjusted the bed to make me more comfortable.
I desperately tried to recall what had happened... Cui Jie’s eyes were filled with tears. "It's all my fault. When the Wires snapped, I didn't react in time. When I crashed into you, I couldn't retract my sword fast enough and ended up injuring you..."
Cao Feng added, "I told you to use props instead of real weapons. Luckily, it was a blunt sword."
I forced a smile. "At least my Wires didn’t snap; otherwise, we’d both be lying here today."
Cao Feng looked puzzled. "It’s strange; everything was checked before we started working. How could it suddenly break?"
I asked, "Did they find out why?"
Cao Feng replied, "The crew investigated and said it was due to aging; the load capacity just couldn’t handle it anymore." He paused for a moment, rubbing his temples. "But I still feel like this is too coincidental."
"Are you suspecting someone tampered with it?"
Cao Feng nodded. "That day, the crew mixed up your Wires; hers should have been yours. If someone did tamper with it, then it was aimed at you."
