Chapter Eleven
Cui Jie said, "All my rumors were created by him, and so were yours. That night you were drunk, and then there was that incident with Wires."
"But he wasn't even at the gathering that night. How could he know I would go to see Xu Yingying?" The more I thought about it, the more confused I became.
Cui Jie continued, "He even tried to get me drunk to take advantage of me. Luckily, I wasn't completely out of it."
I instantly exploded with anger, slamming my fist on the table.
Cui Jie quickly said, "Don't be impulsive! I've exposed his dirty deeds; his future in this industry is over."
I gritted my teeth. "I didn't expect him to be so despicable."
Cui Jie nodded. "Neither did I. He said he liked me, so he created misunderstandings in public opinion while trying to possess me and flirt with other women at the same time."
I tightened my grip on the glass in my hand, rage boiling within me as my fist cracked ominously, wishing I could smash Liang Hao into a pulp.
Seeing this, Cui Jie changed the subject and extended her hand. "Welcome to Yeshi Film Company; we're colleagues again."
I was taken aback for a moment before reaching out to shake her hand.
As we shook hands, memories flooded back.
"Xiao Jie..." I hesitated, wanting to say so much but fearing I'd say it wrong.
Cui Jie gazed at me intently.
I gathered my courage and said, "I've always wanted to find a chance to apologize to you."
Cui Jie withdrew her hand. "You had time to go travel alone but never found the time to say sorry."
Her expression was unreadable; I couldn't tell if she was angry or teasing me.
I explained, "I did think about it. At that time, rumors were flying everywhere; I didn't know what was true or false. I was afraid of being abrupt, so I sent you a message. You didn't reply, and I thought it was real, so..."
Cui Jie shot me a glare. "So what? You just assumed without verifying?"
I replied, "It won't happen again. During this time away, rather than just traveling, I've been reflecting on the past. I've figured things out."
Cui Jie asked, "Figured out what?"
I responded, "I've figured out what I truly want and seen my own heart clearly... and..."
Cui Jie's eyes lowered slightly. "And what else?"
I held her hand tightly. "And I miss you... very much. This time, I won't let go."
Cui Jie pouted playfully. "Who agreed to that? How shameless." She tried to pull her hand away.
I tightened my grip and said, "It was my fault before; I was always lost in my own world and often overlooked your feelings. Trust me, it won't happen again."
Cui Jie spoke softly, "That time, I was a bit willful too. I shouldn't have thrown a tantrum when you were under so much pressure."
Just as I was about to respond, Cui Jie changed the subject, "But if I throw a tantrum and leave in the future, and you don't come after me, then I really will go—completely."
I was taken aback, my heart racing. I replied, "That won't happen because I won't even give you the chance to throw a tantrum. This time, I'm going to hold you close and never let go."
Cui Jie smiled brightly.
.....................
A month later, I proposed to Cui Jie.
The wedding wasn't grand or luxurious; it was attended only by our friends from the industry and our families. But for us, it was perfect enough and filled with happiness.
At the wedding, I was so nervous that I didn't know where to place my hands and feet. The last time I felt this awkward was during my first audition.
Watching the beautiful woman in a white wedding dress about to become my wife felt like a dream—a scene I wanted to freeze forever...
After we got married, we remained busy, but we promised to have dinner together no matter how hectic life got.
We both agreed to avoid kissing scenes.
When we traveled for shoots, we would spend hours on the phone with each other, which earned me the playful nickname of "whipped" from our crew members.
In our free time, we cooked together, explored new cuisines, traveled together, and enjoyed different landscapes while listening to various stories.
One day, we stumbled upon a picturesque village that was struggling with poverty; the children had no school to attend.
We decided to sponsor the local school so that the children could return to their studies. We also promised to visit them every year.
She loved children, so we decided to have one of our own...
We nurtured our little home with care through the small moments of life together.
What they call "peaceful years and stable lives" was nothing more than this for us.
However, for some unknown reason—perhaps due to our busy schedules or lack of rest—she had been feeling particularly fatigued lately.
I took her to see a doctor, but she insisted it wasn't necessary and that she just needed more rest.
Until... she started having recurring fevers... her joints began to ache more... she grew increasingly weak...
Finally, after much persuasion from me, she agreed to go to the hospital for an examination.
**Chapter Twelve**
As I looked at the diagnosis on Cui Jie's medical record, the words "Acute Myeloid Leukemia" loomed large before me. It felt as if a giant hand had tightened around my throat.
I clutched the crumpling medical report, filled with regret. "Why didn't I bring her to the hospital sooner?" "Why wasn't I more alert to her discomfort?" "How could I have been so careless?"
A wave of self-blame, frustration, and remorse washed over me.
In a daze, a massive shadow emerged from the darkness, its chilling laughter echoing around me. It held a scythe and advanced step by step.
The shadow sneered, "The days of happiness are over; accept your fate!"
I roared back, "Screw your fate! My life is mine to control; no one will take everything from me!"
With that, I charged forward with a fist raised.
Suddenly jolted awake, I was drenched in sweat... The only sounds were the beeping machines in the hospital room.
Cui Jie lay weakly on the bed, looking at me.
"Did you have a nightmare?" Her voice was frail yet calm.
I leaned down and embraced her, whispering, "No matter what, I will make sure you get better."
Cui Jie's eyelashes glistened with moisture. "Silly, don't worry..."
The doctor urged me to make a decision about chemotherapy quickly.
Thinking of Xiao Jie and her fear of pain, I had been hoping for a more conservative treatment approach.
Just as I hesitated, my phone rang.
" Hua, why haven't you signed the contract with Chenxing Film Company yet? That's five million in fees!"
Cao Feng urgently reminded me over the phone.
I looked at my wife, struggling to breathe heavily on the hospital bed. After a long pause, I replied, "A Feng, I've decided to give up this contract and temporarily withdraw from the entertainment industry..."
As Xiao Jie developed purple spots on her skin, suffered from a persistent high fever, and even began to have difficulty breathing, we accepted the doctor's advice and prepared for chemotherapy.
Once, twice, three times, four times... Each round of chemotherapy left her in pain and utterly weak. She began to suffer from mouth ulcers, hair loss, and relentless nausea and vomiting. The repeated torment of her illness led her into a deep depression that required medication to manage.
All I could do was watch helplessly as everything unfolded before me, my heart aching with despair. Time and again, the chemotherapy failed to improve her condition. Just when I was on the brink of depression myself, we met an expert specializing in leukemia, Professor Liang.
On his recommendation, we decided to attempt a bone marrow transplant. Although Professor Liang warned that there were still risks and possibilities of relapse, I couldn't let even a glimmer of hope slip away; I would do whatever it took to save her, even if it meant exhausting our family's fortune.
Thanks to the rapid advancement of medical technology in our country, such surgeries could be performed successfully here. When Professor Liang announced that the surgery was a success, I grasped his hand tightly, tears streaming down my face as I smiled. Every day snatched from the clutches of death felt extraordinarily precious.
Xiao Jie's condition stabilized, and her spirits gradually improved. I accompanied her for follow-up visits, rehabilitation therapy, and meditation healing. Everything seemed to be moving in a positive direction.
Cao Feng also reached out to discuss my return to work. However, Professor Liang suddenly approached me with a grave expression. My heart tightened abruptly...
