Jiang Xi seemed to suddenly remember something. She lifted her head slightly and casually asked Fong Yang, "Usually, the prince wouldn't attend such banquets, would he? Is the prince here because he's worried someone at Princess Chang's Residence might cause me trouble?"
Fong Yang maintained his calm demeanor, simply nodding and murmuring, "Hmm."
At that moment, Han Shuang suddenly appeared, kneeling on one knee with his hands clasped in respect. "Your Highness, the Emperor has sent Steward Yang to invite you to the palace for a discussion."
Fong Yang coldly replied, "I have no time."
Han Shuang immediately understood and prepared to leave.
"Wait."
Jiang Xi hurriedly called out to Han Shuang. Turning to Fong Yang, she frowned slightly and said with concern, "The Emperor wants to see you; how can you not go? I know what the Emperor intends to say—he will offer a marriage proposal using me in exchange for your military command. If that's the case, will you accept?"
Upon hearing Jiang Xi's words, Fong Yang recalled what she had said to him yesterday. He instinctively clenched his fists, his resolve regarding military power growing stronger.
He raised his head, looking firmly at Jiang Xi as he responded, "I will marry whoever I choose without needing anyone's consent. Not even the Emperor has the right to decide my marriage."
Jiang Xi felt warmth in her heart. She knew that this man, who would not easily heed even the Emperor's words, could remember every single thing she had said.
She stood on her tiptoes and gently kissed the corner of Fong Yang's lips, her eyes filled with tenderness and concern. She softly reminded him, "Your Highness, remember not to let anything enter your mouth once you're in the palace. One must always be cautious, especially when we are dealing with someone who wishes you harm."
Fong Yang gazed intently at Jiang Xi and nodded seriously. "Understood."
Her concern deeply warmed his heart. He obediently asked, "Once I enter the palace, will you continue to stroll or return to the city?"
At that moment, Han Shuang spoke up again. "Your Highness, Steward Yang also mentioned that the Empress has summoned Lady Jiang and wants her to enter the palace immediately."
Jiang Xi merely smiled faintly and said with a hint of sarcasm, "Does the Empress think she can't give up if she doesn't see me?"
Having chased after her from the prince's residence to Princess Chang's Residence, Fong Yang intended to personally escort Jiang Xi back to the Prime Minister's Residence without her needing to worry.
However, Jiang Xi gently shook her head and said, "No need. The more anxious the Empress becomes, the easier it is to handle. Besides, if I enter the palace with you, she won't dare act against me; instead, I can use her words to gauge the Emperor's intentions."
Fong Yang, though reluctant to let Jiang Xi face the dangers ahead, never opposed her words and nodded in agreement.
Soon after, Jiang Xi left Peach Garden with Fong Yang, heading toward the front courtyard.
As they reached the end of the corridor, a young man rushed over, his face filled with anxiety. Upon seeing Jiang Xi, he hurriedly asked, "Lady Jiang, have you seen my young master? I can't find him anywhere."
Jiang Xi stopped and glanced at him expressionlessly, her tone cold as she replied, "As Young Master Huo's attendant, why aren't you by his side?"
The attendant stammered in response, "Men and women should not be too close... How would I know where he is..."
Hearing this, Jiang Xi let out a soft snort. Just as she turned to leave, she encountered the Eldest Princess.
With a smile on her face and feigning ignorance, the Eldest Princess said, "Uncle Emperor and Lady Jiang are heading to the palace?"
Jiang Xi merely glanced at her and nodded slightly, responding with a faint smile, "The Empress has summoned me; I dare not refuse."
The Eldest Princess continued with her own schemes, smiling as she said, "Men and women should not be too close; Lady Jiang is still an unmarried girl. Little Prince should consider her reputation. Let me prepare another carriage for you."
However, Jiang Xi naturally linked her arm with Fong Yang's and politely declined, "No need to trouble the Eldest Princess. My reputation is already tarnished; what does it matter? It's fine to share a carriage with the prince."
Upon hearing this, the Eldest Princess forced a smile that barely concealed her displeasure and retorted sarcastically, "Lady Jiang seems quite open-minded; your tongue is quite sharp."
Jiang Xi paid no mind to the Eldest Princess's sarcasm and instead engaged with her words, saying, "Eldest Princess praises the prince for being aloof and taciturn. Naturally, I should speak more so that we can spend our days together."
Fong Yang felt a surge of excitement at her words. He had waited too long for this moment; finally hearing Jiang Xi express her willingness to share her life with him filled his heart with joy and gratitude.
Facing the unfriendly Eldest Princess, Jiang Xi showed no fear. She turned to Fong Yang and softly said, "Let's go, my prince."
To outsiders, the Regent appeared indifferent, never sparing a glance for anyone. Yet in front of Jiang Xi, he was always one word: "Alright."
Jiang Xi bid farewell to the Eldest Princess. With Fong Yang by her side, the Eldest Princess could not act out and could only smile as she said, "Please go ahead."
Jiang Xi directly linked arms with Regent Fong Yang and turned to leave, causing the Eldest Princess's expression to immediately sour.
Jiang Xi was so confident that she would marry the Regent and was prepared to become the Regent Consort. She even spoke of spending the rest of her life together, which infuriated the Eldest Princess.
She turned around and coldly scolded Huo Xingwen's Attendant, "Where is Huo Xingwen?"
The Attendant was flustered and stammered, "He... he hasn't been found yet..."
The Eldest Princess shouted angrily, "Useless! Keep looking!" With that, she flicked her sleeve and turned to enter the estate.
Meanwhile, Jiang Xi and Fong Yang arrived at a luxurious carriage, followed by a dozen guards, making quite an impressive display.
Jiang Xi smiled playfully, secretly marveling at the benefits of being with the prince; even the esteemed and favored Eldest Princess treated her with a measure of respect.
Fong Yang looked at her and smiled, saying, "Once you become the Regent Consort, the Emperor, Empress, and Eldest Princess will all be your juniors."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Xi couldn't help but think about how the now 40-year-old Eldest Princess would have to respectfully call her Imperial Aunt in the future. Other Royal Relatives would almost certainly have to address her as Sister-in-law whenever they met. The thought made her chuckle; after all, Fong Yang's status was simply too high.
Just then, Jiang Xi recalled the anxious expression on Huo Xingwen's Attendant from earlier. She couldn't help but raise her gaze slightly and asked Fong Yang, "Fong Yang, is something wrong with Huo Xingwen?"
Fong Yang knew that Jiang Xi had no feelings for Huo Xingwen at this point, so he simply replied with a faint "Hmm," offering only a slight hint of concern.
