Despite saying that, Long Yong was well aware of Rao Jie’s personality. Even if Rao Jie started dating someone else and faced difficulties, she wouldn’t come to him for comfort; that was her way of respecting him.
As expected, upon hearing this, Rao Jie didn’t respond but simply smiled.
Meanwhile, on a nearby platform, a group of people was bustling about, taking photos and recording videos to commemorate the occasion.
“Chang Fei, don’t be upset. Do you really think you can’t live without Professor Wu? How about this: go pray at the Fate Stone; it might just work!”
Chang Fei ignored her companions and sulked alone in a corner. Even though they were out having fun, it did nothing to lift her spirits.
She didn’t necessarily need Professor Wu; she just felt unwilling to accept defeat. She came from a good background, was attractive, and was intelligent. Among the women surrounding Wu Rong, she considered herself the best—especially compared to Rao Jie. What did Rao Jie have that she didn’t?
Chang Fei had always been proud and had often taken the initiative to show interest only to be overlooked. She was used to being pursued rather than chasing after someone herself. But Wu Rong was far superior to those who had pursued her. If she could win over such a man, it would be exhilarating and boost her pride; how could she give up so easily?
She had to find a way to make Rao Jie back off and open Wu Rong’s eyes to see who truly suited him best.
“Oh no, stop taking pictures and come comfort Chang Fei! Aren’t we sisters?” One girl noticed Chang Fei’s increasingly sour expression and urgently called another girl over.
“I’ll be right there! I’m just getting a panoramic shot… Wait? Is that the class monitor with Rao Jie? Why are they hugging?”
“What?” Chang Fei immediately stood up and looked in the direction her friend pointed.
Although the platform obscured their figures, she could still make out enough to identify who was embracing each other.
Chang Fei’s heart raced with anxiety. What was Rao Jie doing? Was she playing both sides?
Rao Jie and Long Yong hadn’t gone up but were sitting on the steps chatting while waiting for the others to come down. When their teammates returned, they teased them about not going up to pray.
Long Yong defended Rao Jie, saying loudly, “Don’t joke about my sister.”
An oblivious person chimed in, “When did you get a sister?”
But the smart ones understood what was happening; everyone was good friends and naturally wouldn’t do anything to embarrass Long Yong or Rao Jie. They acted as if nothing had happened and chatted happily as they descended.
As Rao Jie returned with the group, they spotted Wu Rong and Ye Ming having coffee in the hall. Naturally, everyone approached to greet them.
Standing at the back of the crowd, Rao Jie looked up and immediately locked eyes with Wu Rong. It was clear that as soon as Rao Jie appeared, Wu Rong had been watching her intently.
Rao Jie unnaturally avoided eye contact, and Wu Rong did nothing else but let them greet each other before heading upstairs.
Dinner that evening was a hot spring cuisine. Everyone sat together in a large private room, chatting and enjoying their meal. However, Wu Rong was absent. Rao Jie knew he disliked such gatherings, but she inadvertently overheard Chang Fei asking elsewhere where Wu Rong had gone.
Chang Fei didn’t have Wu Rong’s contact information, so he couldn’t reach out to him and could only look for him in a setting where everyone might be present. Rao Jie listened quietly, feeling an indescribable mix of emotions; she found herself losing her appetite.
