" A Chen, it's time for your medicine!"
I lowered my voice and walked into the bedroom with a cup of water.
The man sitting on the edge of the bed turned around, the setting sun casting a golden glow on his handsome face. Yet, his eyes lacked focus.
"Why did you come so late? You're half an hour behind schedule."
Lu Chen's words were reproachful, but he smiled gently in my direction.
"There was an urgent matter at the company."
I mimicked Zhao Rui's tone as I placed the cup in his hand. Lu Chen is my husband, and I am playing the role of his childhood sweetheart.
A year ago, Lu Chen had a car accident that resulted in temporary blindness, and the recovery time remains uncertain. His fiancée, Zhao Rui, proud and ambitious, naturally refused to marry a blind man and fled abroad to hide.
My brother urgently needed heart surgery due to a sudden illness, and the hefty medical bills weighed heavily on me. Coincidentally, the the Lu Family was secretly looking for someone to impersonate Zhao Rui, someone with similar qualities.
I was the perfect candidate. My vocal training had been excellent, and we quickly reached an agreement.
"Wife, what are we having for dinner?"
Lu Chen smiled as he played with my fingers. He worked from home every day and only relaxed when I returned from work.
"Auntie made your favorite dishes; I'll bring them to you shortly."
"Great."
Lu Chen caressed my neck and leaned in to kiss me. My face flushed slightly; I couldn't push him away and instead found myself held by his wrist.
My heart raced, even though I had experienced this many times before. Yet, each time I felt nervous, afraid that I might accidentally give myself away. Lu Chen's hand rested on my waist, sliding down to my stomach, his expression puzzled.
"It's been so long, why is there still no movement?"
"Uh... it depends on fate, and I've been quite exhausted from work lately. I probably need to take care of my health first," I lied, knowing he couldn't see my subtle expressions. Our relationship was merely a contract; I always took my medication on time.
"It seems I need to put in more effort!"
Lu Chen smiled and playfully nibbled on my ear. Seeing that he wanted to continue, I quickly pushed him away.
"I-I'll go check if dinner is ready."
His light laughter followed me as I walked away. My face flushed, and my heart raced as I leaned against the corridor. The thought of his tenderness, everything about him belonging to his fiancée, felt like a bucket of cold water splashed over me. This man was gentle and wise, with impeccable manners; it was hard not to be drawn to him. Moreover, I had liked him for a long time.
Downstairs, Lu Chen's mother, Zhou Hui, was waiting for me at the dining table.
"You're just in time; I have good news for you. Zhao Rui has been found, and Doctor Shen also said that A Chen's eyes show signs of recovery. Soon you'll be able to retire successfully."
Zhou Hui's eyes sparkled with joy; it was clear she was genuinely happy. I forced a smile, "Congratulations! Finally, it can come to an end."
However, when Zhou Hui noticed the hickey on my neck, her expression instantly turned cold.
"Lin Yue, don't make things complicated. If you slip up during this time or have any ulterior motives, you can forget about getting a single cent for your brother's future medical expenses."
"I understand, Madam Zhou!"
I nodded coldly, ignoring the piercing disdain in her gaze.
Privately, Zhou Hui didn't allow me to call her 'Mom.'
In her heart, I would always be a poor imitation, lucky to be associated with her son.
The one truly worthy of A Chen was someone from a noble family like Zhao Rui's.
If it weren't for the embarrassment of losing face on the day of the engagement, she wouldn't have let a woman like me step foot into the the Lu Family at all.
On the engagement day, she made me cover my face with a veil, merely going through the motions.
...
After dinner, I brought a glass of milk to Lu Chen.
As I entered the bedroom, he was on the phone with his assistant, listening to updates about the company.
I sat beside him, my heart pounding, my mind repeating the rehearsed lines I had prepared.
Lu Chen hung up and reached out to hold my hand.
"Tomorrow's the weekend; how about I take you out for some fun?"
"But... I need to go back to my parents' house tomorrow."
He curled his fingers around mine and smiled, "Then I'll wait for you."
I felt a wave of melancholy wash over me; tomorrow marked the end of our agreement, and tonight was our last night together.
" A Chen, drink your milk and get some rest early."
I placed the cup in his hand.
After he finished drinking, there were traces of milk at the corner of his mouth. I raised my hand to wipe it away.
My fingertip brushed against his lips.
Lu Chen felt a thrill run through him and leaned in to kiss me precisely.
It felt as if the strings in my mind snapped, and I instinctively wrapped my arms around his neck.
"Why are you so passionate tonight, my dear?"
" A Chen..."
"Take care of yourself!"
