Ma Yuan looked at me intently, then took out his phone and played a video.
In the video, I was holding flowers as I walked out of a flower shop. After a while, Yu Fenglin drove up and parked in front of me. I handed him the flowers and then got into the car. The video ended there.
Ma Yuan stared at me. "Miss Lin, do you have anything to say now?"
I smiled. "Officer Ma, what can this video prove? Does it prove that I killed Yu Fenglin? Or does it prove that I lured him into my car?"
Ma Yuan was left speechless by my questions.
I continued, "Officer Ma, if there's no evidence, you shouldn't make baseless accusations."
Ma Yuan's face turned an alarming shade of pale. Just as he was about to speak, his phone suddenly rang. He answered the call, and after hearing something on the other end, his expression changed dramatically as he stood up abruptly.
"I'll be there right away!"
After hanging up, he gave me one last deep look before turning and leaving in a hurry. Another young officer took his place.
I knew that Ma Yuan had been very busy lately. The Yu Family, the Dou Family, and the Li Family all had various issues with their businesses. The police were overwhelmed trying to handle these matters and were struggling to keep up. But they had no real solutions; they could only press on despite the pressure.
I glanced at the young officer's innocent face and let out a light laugh.
"Officer, I want to go home."
Early the next morning, Ma Yuan appeared at the flower shop's entrance. He hadn't slept all night, and his eyes were bloodshot. He gazed at the shop with a complex expression. After a night had passed, the commercial center owned by the Yu Family had exploded, resulting in countless casualties. Yet here I sat, smiling as if welcoming guests.
Ma Yuan stepped in front of me and said in a low voice, "Miss Lin, you said yesterday that evildoers get their comeuppance."
"Now it's your turn."
I tilted my head, looking at him in confusion. "Officer Ma, what are you talking about? What did I do?"
Ma Yuan replied coldly, "Are you still playing dumb?"
I chuckled softly. "Officer Ma, do you have any evidence?"
Ma Yuan fell silent.
I continued, "If there's no evidence, then please keep quiet."
Taking a deep breath, he pulled out handcuffs and cuffed me. "Miss Lin, you're coming with us."
I was taken away obediently. I knew this time they wouldn't let me off easily. But I wasn't afraid because I knew they had no evidence.
A senior officer and a young policeman walked in to take over Ma Yuan's position.
The Senior Officer looked at me, his face clearly showing a mix of helplessness and anger.
He probably couldn't understand how I could be so calm about it.
I smiled and asked, "Officer, do you have any evidence?"
The Senior Officer paused, letting out a sigh. "Miss Lin, we indeed do not have enough evidence to consider you a suspect."
"But we still hope you can cooperate with our investigation."
I nodded. "Of course."
After a moment of silence, the Senior Officer suddenly spoke up. "Miss Lin, I have a question I'd like to ask you."
I raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead."
He continued, "While investigating a case, we found something suspicious."
"The people in the alley didn't notice who threw away the garbage bag containing a head."
"It was as if..."
"The appearance of that garbage bag was taken for granted."
I chuckled softly. "Perhaps that's exactly what the murderer intended?"
"They wanted people to overlook this matter, to forget about it."
"Just like..."
I gazed out the window and slowly said, "Just like the Old Beggar at the alley entrance."
"The Old Beggar is there every day; people have gotten used to him."
"So when he disappears, no one pays attention."
The Senior Officer nodded thoughtfully.
