Moonlit Vengeful Spirit 5: Insect Infestation

A few days later, I gathered with Gu Yuan and some of the partners he had summoned in a remote warehouse, which we had temporarily established as our secret base. The walls were covered with maps, densely marked in red and blue, each mark representing a potential location of evidence. Various documents and photographs scattered across the table, all related to Li Hao's crimes, piled haphazardly, waiting for us to sort and analyze them. 0

"The evidence is scattered throughout the city; we need to find them one by one," Gu Yuan said. I nodded, sliding my finger across the map. 0

"Here, here, and here are all possible locations where evidence might be hidden. But we have to be careful; Li Hao's spies are everywhere." 0

"We'll split up," Gu Yuan suggested. "Lin Yu, you and I will go here; the others will check other locations. Stay in touch, and notify us immediately if you find anything." 0

The operation began. Under the cover of night, several figures silently moved through the city's streets and alleys. 0

In an abandoned factory, the beam of a flashlight swept through the darkness, dust dancing in the light. This place had once been one of Li Hao's illegal trading spots; if luck was on our side, we might find some forgotten evidence. 0

"Be careful," I whispered. "Every step here could trigger an alarm." 0

Gu Yuan nodded, his movements skilled and cautious, leaving no corner that might hide evidence unchecked. A musty smell filled the warehouse, and under the dim light, everything appeared shadowy. 0

Just as we were rummaging through a pile of old boxes, an unsettling atmosphere began to permeate the air. A faint rustling sound broke the silence of the warehouse, as if countless tiny footsteps were moving in the dark. 0

My heart tightened; I immediately stopped what I was doing and listened intently. Gu Yuan sensed something was off too; he signaled for silence and quietly approached the source of the sound. 0

Suddenly, from a crack in the warehouse wall and beneath the stone slabs on the ground, countless insects surged forth. They had sharp mandibles and numerous pairs of glowing little eyes, resembling demons crawling out from hell. 0

"Lin Yu, back away!" Gu Yuan shouted as he ran toward me. But it was too late; the swarm rushed toward us like a tide, moving at an astonishing speed. 0

Just when Gu Yuan and I thought we would meet our end in this dilapidated warehouse, a dark red light suddenly emanated from my coat pocket. The blood-red glow shot toward the swarm. 0

The onslaught of insects abruptly halted; they became disoriented, ceasing their attack and scattering in all directions. The red light seemed to exert some mysterious control over them. As it flickered in and out of visibility, the swarm gradually retreated, restoring calm to the warehouse as if nothing had happened moments before. 0

Gu Yuan let out a quiet breath and murmured, "What was that red light...?" 0

"The Pendant—the one left at the dumping site," I replied. 0

I pulled out the metallic Pendant from my inner pocket and examined it closely; it no longer emitted any red light and appeared just like an ordinary object. 0

"It seems we need to investigate this Pendant further. Today's swarm might have been some kind of warning; we must be even more cautious." 0

"Yes, it looks like whatever is behind Li Hao is starting to lose control. We don't have much time left," I said softly while staring at where the insects had vanished. 0

Little did I know how quickly that day would arrive... 0
