One night, Gu Yuan and I met at the temporary base as usual. As soon as I opened the base door, I was confronted by a gruesome sight: a bloody corpse hung on the inside of the door. The skull was visibly deformed, and the limbs were grotesquely twisted from fractures. There were multiple broken bones protruding through the skin, creating a horrifying appearance. A dagger pierced through the center of the corpse's forehead, impaling a note that read: "Bring the Pendant to find me! Li Hao."
"Xiao Peng!" Gu Yuan clenched his fists tightly, his eyes reddening as he gasped.
"What is this..." I turned to look at Gu Yuan, who had lost his usual calm demeanor, and asked softly.
"Xiao Peng was my undercover agent in Li Hao's group. He contributed the most in gathering evidence this time," Gu Yuan replied, lowering his gaze to conceal his emotions.
I fell silent, gently patting Gu Yuan's shoulder before leading the way into the temporary base.
Afterward, Gu Yuan and I donned our specially designed black tactical suits. Gu Yuan's fingers glided over his firearm, checking the magazine and safety. My gaze fixed on the blades, ensuring their sharpness was unmatched.
As night deepened, our preparations neared completion. Gu Yuan and I exchanged determined glances.
" Xiao Yu baby, be careful and don't overexert yourself!" Gu Yuan said in his usual teasing tone.
"Shut up! Mind your own business!" I rolled my eyes at him.
Upon reaching the predetermined location, we began to carefully scout our surroundings for any possible clues. We discovered a hidden entrance leading to an underground chamber.
Exchanging a glance with Gu Yuan, we nodded slightly before cautiously entering the chamber one after the other. The space was vast, with strange symbols and patterns carved into the walls. In the center stood a stone altar surrounded by several stone statues, each with varying expressions—some fierce, some sorrowful—but all strikingly lifelike. An unsettling atmosphere pervaded the air, as if this space was shrouded in some indescribable force.
I raised my flashlight and slowly approached the altar. A scene that would haunt me for life unfolded before my eyes.
In front of each statue lay a small mountain made of nine bloody hearts stacked together. On the ground beside these mounds were faint traces of numerous older piles. Instantly, my scalp tingled as cold sweat dripped down my collar.
"Lin Yu, come quickly!" Gu Yuan's voice came out low and urgent.
I took one last look at the scene before swiftly turning to run towards Gu Yuan.
"What did you find, Gu Yuan?" I asked as I reached him, standing behind the massive altar and following his flashlight's beam.
A colossal Bone Mountain loomed before me, gleaming ominously. New bones, old bones, fragmented ones, complete ones—all sorts piled together to form a towering mound that seemed to reach the clouds.
For a moment, both Gu Yuan and I were stunned into silence. But just then, blinding light flooded the chamber as we were surrounded by a group of suddenly appearing figures.
"You finally made it! Did you like the gift I prepared for you? Nightmare."
Li Hao's voice was low and menacing, his steps slow and steady, as if he were savoring this game of cat and mouse.
"Enough with the nonsense, Li Hao, you demon!"
"Your crimes, your schemes, will come to an end tonight."
Li Hao laughed, a chilling sound that echoed in the night sky.
"End? Yes, it should indeed come to an end. Nightmare, hand over the Pendant."
Li Hao grinned wickedly, shaking the miniature remote control in his hand.
"The Pendant? Not a chance!" I bit my lip, speaking through clenched teeth.
"Oh? Darling, would you like to see some fireworks? 'Bang!' A special bomb firework just for you."
Li Hao chuckled cruelly, mimicking an explosion with his hands.
"I'll count to three. If you don't hand over the Pendant, I'll show you the most spectacular fireworks this city has ever seen."
"One... Two..."
Li Hao raised the miniature remote control high, taunting us.
Gu Yuan and I exchanged a quick glance of understanding and rushed toward Li Hao.
His expression darkened as his movements suddenly became swift and fierce, lunging at us like a cheetah.
As the battle raged on, bullets whizzed through the chamber, striking walls and obstacles with sharp echoes. Gu Yuan and I skillfully used cover to execute rapid and precise shots. Statues were shattered by bullets, altars smashed to pieces.
After a violent clash, we found ourselves face-to-face with Li Hao.
He was panting heavily, becoming more frantic and reckless. Desperation and madness flickered in his eyes; he knew his plan was on the brink of collapse.
"In that case, you and this city will accompany me to the grave!"
Li Hao shouted wildly, preparing to press the button on the remote.
"Li Hao, look what I have!"
I tossed the Pendant high into the air towards him.
Li Hao's gaze locked onto the Pendant, and he instinctively ran toward it. In that moment, Gu Yuan spotted Li Hao's opening. With a sidestep and a dodge, he delivered a precise counterattack. Li Hao was hit; his body recoiled and slammed against the wall with a dull thud.
Gu Yuan gasped for breath as he looked at Li Hao, who was leaning against the wall.
"It's over, Li Hao. Your crimes, your schemes, will all be exposed."
Li Hao struggled to stand up, a twisted and frenzied smile spreading across his face.
"Over? Hahaha, Nightmare, what a delusion!"
With that, Li Hao tore open his shirt and plunged a dagger into his own heart. He staggered toward the center of the altar, muttering a string of unknown incantations.
Bang... A gunshot rang out, and Li Hao collapsed to the ground just as he was nearing the altar.
"Tsk, fool! You thought you could be faster than a bullet?"
The familiar teasing voice of Gu Yuan reached my ears. I shook my head helplessly and let out a light laugh.
For a moment, neither Gu Yuan nor I noticed that the Pendant began to emit a faint crimson glow after coming into contact with Li Hao's blood...
