I supported Gu Yuan as we emerged from the hidden chamber, ready to pull out my phone to notify the police for further assistance. Suddenly, the night sky darkened, and an unusual rumble of thunder echoed, as if an ominous roar of anger filled the air. Lightning split the sky, illuminating the ground and revealing faces twisted in fear.
“Lin Yu, get ready, it’s coming!”
Gu Yuan’s voice rang in my ears as he gripped a dagger that glimmered with a cold light. “The power of the Evil God should not be underestimated; we must be careful!”
I nodded, tightening my grip on the blade in my hand.
Suddenly, a bone-chilling wind swept through, carrying a nauseating stench. The wind seemed to be laced with low, mocking laughter.
From the depths of the chamber, a figure slowly emerged. It was Li Hao. No, to be precise, it was Li Hao’s body. ‘Li Hao’ staggered forward with a twisted gait, clutching a pulsating heart in his hand, occasionally emitting a crunching sound as if he were chewing.
“There!”
I pointed into the darkness ahead, my voice trembling slightly. In the shadows, a pair of glowing eyes drew closer, filled with malice and cruelty.
The power of the Evil God finally revealed itself; its form was grotesque and terrifying, as if it were composed of darkness and nightmares. Each movement distorted space around it, and every attack carried overwhelming force.
“Damn humans, I have barely collected one-tenth of my usual power.”
“Nightmare, it’s you again! Why is it always you who ruin my plans?”
‘Li Hao’ mumbled.
“Shut up, you disgusting creature! This is not your place!”
I shouted defiantly at ‘Li Hao’.
“Foolish human, watch me tear your heart apart!”
‘Li Hao’ let out a low growl and lunged at me with incredible speed, like a bolt of black lightning. I felt like a cheetah in the night, muscles tensed as I mentally rehearsed every detail of my movements.
It swung its fist; the wind howled as it cut through the air toward my face. Instinctively, I turned my head just in time for the punch to graze my cheek. Almost simultaneously, the powerful impact sent me crashing backward onto the cold ground. Pain shot through my back as if countless needles were stabbing me; I gritted my teeth to suppress any groans of agony so as not to distract Gu Yuan, who was still fighting.
“Watch out! Get away!”
Gu Yuan’s warning reached me just in time. I rolled away with all my strength and quickly got back on my feet to rejoin the battle.
In our struggle, Gu Yuan and I continuously searched for ‘Li Hao’s weaknesses while observing its every move and attack. After one fierce strike, I inadvertently noticed something hanging from ‘Li Hao’s neck: a Pendant, flickering in and out of visibility. Suddenly, realization struck me.
“Gu Yuan, the Pendant! It’s the source of its power! Quick! Tear it off!”
I shouted loudly, directing the flashlight towards the place where the Pendant hung. At the same time, we concentrated all our strength on seizing the Pendant.
Fear finally appeared in Li Hao's eyes, which burned with a wild flame. Each punch he threw carried the force of thunder. I could feel his punches slicing through the air like knives, each swing seeming to tear apart the night sky.
Li Hao's attacks grew increasingly fierce, his fists and feet pouring down like a torrential rain, each strike leaving me and Gu Yuan gasping for breath. I gritted my teeth, summoning all my strength to meet each of his assaults.
Finally, in a clash of power and speed, I found an opening. As Li Hao swung a punch at me, I braced myself and charged forward, simultaneously striking his wrist with the iron rod in my hand. He let out a pained cry, momentarily halting his movement. Seizing the opportunity, I kicked out with all my might, landing a heavy blow to his abdomen that sent him flying to the ground.
In an instant, Gu Yuan leaped up beside me, tearing off the Pendant from Li Hao's neck and throwing it with all his strength towards the dense lightning in the sky.
"No!..."
A flash of lightning erupted as the Pendant transformed into a wisp of white smoke. Li Hao's breathing became rapid; his body began to tremble uncontrollably, and his strength started to wane. Gradually, his form became blurry until, with one last unwilling roar, this strange body vanished without a trace.
The fierce battle finally came to an end. Gu Yuan and I were panting heavily, clutching our wounds while exchanging relieved smiles.
"Is it over? Is that all, Xiao Yu baby?"
"Want to go another round?"
"No, no! Ouch, my waist... Damn it, I haven't even had a son yet!"
"A son? You don't even have a wife yet, Gu Yuan."
" Xiao Yu baby, how about you marry me?"
"Shut up! Gu Yuan, be careful or I'll cut off your little ancestor."
Lying on the ground, I gazed up at the night sky and felt that tonight's stars were particularly bright.
In the sky, a full moon hung high, casting its silvery light upon the gently flowing Qingshui River. The water shimmered under the moonlight, creating ripples as if countless silver fish were frolicking beneath the surface.
Gu Yuan and I stood by the Qingshui River once more. I saw Xiao Ran in the center of the river again. However, this time she did not speak; she simply smiled at me and waved her hand before transforming into specks of starlight that scattered across the river.
"Goodbye. I hope you find joy and peace in your next life," I murmured with a smile.
"What? Xiao Yu baby, are you talking to me?" Gu Yuan asked as he dug at his ears and tilted his head.
"Yes, I'm asking how many stitches you want to close that mouth of yours."
I shot him an annoyed glare before turning to leave.
"Don't, Xiao Yu baby, I know you love me!"
"Hey, wait for me..."
The Qingshui River returned to its usual tranquility, as if nothing had ever happened. No! It seemed something had indeed occurred...
In this bustling city, where material desires reign supreme, darkness takes on an invisible form, lurking in every corner of the metropolis, penetrating everywhere. It weaves through the gaps of towering buildings, slinks through subway tunnels, and breeds within the hearts of people. It embodies greed, jealousy, anger, and fear; it is the shadow in the hearts of those who have been overlooked, abandoned, and hurt.
In this mesmerizing and dreamlike city, anyone could become a host to darkness. When night falls and you walk home alone, you might feel a chill creeping up behind you—that is the embodiment of darkness watching, waiting for an opportunity to pull those with fragile souls into an endless abyss.
And ‘Nightmare’ is the dark nightmare; as long as darkness exists, ‘Nightmare’ will continue to fight until the last person falls.
