Li Lin clenched his fists, warily staring at the tall, cold man before him. "Who exactly are you?"
The man let out a cold laugh, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "You can call me Black Crow." He waved his hand, and the armed men behind him immediately raised their guns, aiming at Li Lin and the others. "Hand over the Starwing Beast Cub, and I might consider letting you live."
A chill ran through Li Lin's heart as he instinctively stepped in front of Xiao Xing. "What makes you think I would agree?"
Black Crow narrowed his eyes, a cruel smile curling at the corners of his mouth. "Because you have no choice." He suddenly grabbed Liya by the arm, dragging her to the front. "Unless you want to watch your companion die right in front of you."
Liya let out a pained groan, her face as pale as paper. "Li Lin, don’t worry about me! Protect Xiao Xing!"
Li Lin tightened his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms. "Let her go! We can negotiate."
Black Crow scoffed derisively. "Negotiate? What makes you think you have the right to negotiate with me?" His gaze shifted to Xiao Xing, a flicker of greed flashing in his eyes. "Hand over the Starwing Beast, or she dies."
Li Lin felt a wave of dizziness wash over him as the responsibility to protect his companions clashed violently with his promise to guard Xiao Xing. "Give me a minute; I need to think."
Black Crow frowned impatiently. "You have no right to bargain."
At that critical moment, Xiao Xing suddenly let out a sharp cry, a powerful wave of energy radiating from her and spreading outward, causing Black Crow's men to stagger back.
Seizing the opportunity, Li Lin lunged forward and delivered a solid punch to Black Crow's jaw. Black Crow grunted and released Liya.
"Run!" Li Lin shouted as he grabbed Liya and shielded Xiao Xing while rushing toward the ruins' exit.
Gunfire erupted behind them, bullets whizzing past their ears. Li Lin gritted his teeth and sprinted forward without hesitation.
Suddenly, Xiao Xing leaped onto Li Lin's shoulder, closed her eyes, and her body began to glow faintly. An invisible energy barrier formed around the three of them, with bullets striking it and ringing out like chimes.
Li Lin felt a jolt in his heart as he looked at Xiao Xing on his shoulder. "Well done, buddy!"
They stumbled out of the ruins and found a hidden cave to take shelter in. Li Lin cautiously observed the cave entrance, and only after confirming it was temporarily safe did he let out a long sigh of relief.
"Are you okay?" he turned to check on Liya's injuries.
Liya weakly shook her head. "I'm fine, just a bit exhausted." Her gaze fell on Xiao Xing. "Did it just...?"
Li Lin nodded, a glimmer of surprise and pride flashing in his eyes. "That's right, Xiao Xing saved us." He gently stroked Xiao Xing's head. "You're even more amazing than I imagined, little one."
Xiao Xing lay tiredly on the ground, letting out a faint whimper. Li Lin looked at it with concern. "Don't worry, we'll protect you."
Suddenly, Liya grabbed Li Lin's hand. "Li Lin, did you hear what Black Crow said? Why is he so obsessed with capturing Xiao Xing?"
Li Lin furrowed his brow. "I don't know, but I have a feeling that Xiao Xing's identity might be much more special than we think."
Just then, footsteps echoed from the cave entrance. Li Lin stood up alertly, positioning himself in front of Liya and Xiao Xing.
The figure of Black Crow appeared at the entrance, a trace of blood still at the corner of his mouth. "Nice performance, Li Lin," he said coldly. "But do you really think you can escape my grasp with just a young beast?"
Li Lin clenched his fists, ready for a fight. "What do you want?"
Black Crow revealed a mysterious smile. "What I want is the power to change this world." His gaze landed on Xiao Xing. "And this Starwing Beast Cub is the key."
"What do you mean?" Li Lin asked warily.
Black Crow slowly paced back and forth, dangerous light flickering in his eyes. "Do you know why this world has become what it is today? Because of human greed and foolishness." He pointed at Xiao Xing. "But this little one holds the power to change everything."
Li Lin felt a wave of dizziness. "Are you saying... Xiao Xing can save this world?"
Black Crow let out a cold laugh. "Save? Or destroy? All I know is that controlling it means controlling the future of this wasteland."
A heaviness settled in Li Lin's heart as he glanced back at Xiao Xing and Liya, then turned to face Black Crow at the cave entrance. A choice concerning Xiao Xing's fate and the future of the wasteland lay before him.
"So, Li Lin," Black Crow extended his hand, "will you choose to cooperate with me, or will you choose destruction?"
