Li Lin clenched his fists, warily staring at the tall, cold man before him. "Who exactly are you?"
The Falcon sneered, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "My identity is not important." He waved his hand, and the armed men behind him immediately raised their guns, aiming at Li Lin and the others. "Hand over the Starwing Beast Cub, and I might consider letting you live."
A chill ran through Li Lin's heart as he instinctively stepped in front of Xiao Xing. "What makes you think I would agree?"
The Falcon narrowed his eyes, a cruel smile curling at the corners of his mouth. "Because you have no choice." He suddenly grabbed Liya by the arm, dragging her to the front. "Unless you want to watch your companions die before your eyes."
Liya let out a pained groan, her face as pale as paper. "Li Lin, don't worry about me! Protect Xiao Xing!"
Li Lin tightened his fists, his nails digging deep into his palms. "Let her go! We can negotiate for what you want."
The Falcon laughed disdainfully. "Negotiate? What makes you think you have the right to negotiate with me?" His gaze fell on Xiao Xing, a flicker of greed flashing in his eyes. "Do you think this is just an ordinary Starwing Beast Cub?"
Li Lin's heart sank. "What do you mean?"
The Falcon replied coldly, "This Starwing Beast is a product of some experiment, possessing abilities far beyond that of ordinary beasts." He locked eyes with Li Lin. "Moreover, its existence is closely tied to your past."
Li Lin felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. "What are you talking about?"
Suddenly, the Falcon pulled out a projection device, and an image from ten years ago appeared on the screen. "Look at this," he said cruelly. "Do you recognize this Elite Soldier?"
Li Lin's eyes widened in shock; the young soldier in the footage was unmistakably himself from a decade ago. "This can't be."
The Falcon sneered. "Ten years ago, you were involved in a secret military operation." He pointed at the Starwing Beast in the footage. "You discovered Xiao Xing's parents but ultimately led to their deaths."
Li Lin felt a wave of dizziness, memories flooding back like a tide. "No, I don't remember any of this."
Liya looked at Li Lin in shock. "Is this true?"
Li Lin closed his eyes in pain. "I really don't remember."
The Falcon said coldly, "Ignorance is not an excuse." He fixed his gaze on Li Lin. "Now, you have two choices: either hand over Xiao Xing, or watch your companions die."
Li Lin felt unprecedented pressure. He glanced at Liya, then at Xiao Xing. "I... I need time to think."
The Falcon frowned impatiently. "You don't have time."
At that critical moment, Xiao Xing suddenly let out a sharp cry, and a powerful wave of energy radiated outward from it, causing the Falcon and his men to stagger back.
Seizing the opportunity, Li Lin lunged forward and landed a solid punch on the Falcon's jaw. The Falcon grunted and released Liya.
"Run!" Li Lin shouted as he grabbed Liya and shielded Xiao Xing, rushing toward the ruins.
Gunfire erupted behind them, bullets whizzing past their ears. Li Lin gritted his teeth and sprinted forward without hesitation.
Suddenly, Xiao Xing leaped onto Li Lin's shoulder, closed its eyes, and a faint glow enveloped its body. An invisible energy barrier formed around the three of them, with bullets striking it and producing a clanging sound.
Li Lin's heart jolted as he looked at Xiao Xing on his shoulder. "Good job, buddy!"
They stumbled out of the ruins and found a hidden cave to take shelter in. Li Lin kept a vigilant watch at the entrance, only letting out a sigh of relief after confirming they were temporarily safe.
"Are you all okay?" he turned to check on Liya's injuries.
Liya weakly shook her head. "I'm fine, just a bit exhausted." Her gaze fell on Xiao Xing, then back to Li Lin. "What the falcon said earlier... is it true?"
Li Lin closed his eyes in pain. "I really don't remember." He looked at Xiao Xing, guilt filling his eyes. "But if it is true, then I owe Xiao Xing an explanation."
After a moment of silence, Liya said firmly, "No matter what happened, we are a team now." She grasped Li Lin's hand. "We will protect Xiao Xing together and find out the truth."
Li Lin looked at Liya with gratitude. "Thank you."
Just then, footsteps echoed from the entrance. Li Lin stood up alertly, positioning himself in front of Liya and Xiao Xing.
The falcon's figure appeared at the cave's mouth, a trace of blood still at the corner of his mouth. "Nice performance, Li Lin," he said coldly. "But did you really think you could escape my grasp with just a cub?"
Li Lin clenched his fists, ready for a fight. "What do you want?"
The falcon revealed a mysterious smile. "What I want is the power to change this world." His gaze landed on Xiao Xing. "And this Starwing Beast Cub is the key."
Li Lin felt a wave of dizziness wash over him as he glanced back at Xiao Xing and Liya, then back at the falcon. A choice concerning Xiao Xing's fate and the future of the wasteland lay before him.
