I woke up with a start from my dream.
A cloth was wrapped around my forehead, and I felt a dull ache.
"Madam, you're awake?"
I pressed my temples and shook my head slightly. "Water..."
The maid quickly brought over a cup of warm water, carefully feeding it to me. The cool liquid soothed the dryness in my throat, alleviating the discomfort almost instantly.
At that moment, the door to the room was pushed open from the outside.
My five-year-old daughter, Xiao Yin, was holding Liang Lin's hand, standing before me one behind the other.
Xiao Yin's eyes, strikingly similar to Xiao Hang's, glinted with hostility. "Auntie, you're awake? Daddy said you're my mother. When you were sick, I took care of you."
She deliberately emphasized the word "Auntie."
Xiao Hang didn’t correct her; his probing gaze fell on me.
Xiao Yin tilted her little head and asked, "Mother, do you really not remember anything?"
I looked at them in confusion. "Who are you? I don’t remember anything."
Xiao Hang clearly grew impatient and scoffed sarcastically, " Yin, your mother is pretending to have amnesia. She doesn’t want to agree to let Liang Lin become a concubine and doesn’t want her in our home."
Xiao Yin seemed to understand only partially as she tightly held Liang Lin's hand. "Mother, you're so stingy!"
Liang Lin subtly curled her lips in a faint smile.
Xiao Hang turned around with the two girls and left the room.
A young maid entered from outside. "Madam, the master just went out. If you have any instructions, just call for me."
The maid lowered her head to tidy up the medicine box and murmured softly to herself, "Madam, the master is really good to you. When you had that unfortunate miscarriage back then, he stayed by your side without leaving for a month."
"We all thought there was no love in this world. Now that the master has been with you for several days again, we maids believe there are indeed lovers in this world."
I was taken aback.
Back then, when I had that unfortunate miscarriage, it wasn’t Xiao Hang who stayed by my side day and night; it was my sworn brother Zhao Mingcheng.

As he picked up a spoon to feed me the medicine, I shook my head. "Brother, I have no appetite."
Zhao Mingcheng said sternly, "No, you have to take your medicine. How can I relax if you don't?"
He was usually calm and composed, so it was rare to see him angry. Reluctantly, I drank the medicine. He watched me intently until I finished, then let out a sigh of relief.
I asked curiously, "Brother, how did you know I was sick?"
After a long silence, Zhao Mingcheng replied hoarsely, "You are at the Pei Residence; I couldn't help but worry."
I was taken aback by his straightforwardness. Noticing his slip of composure, he turned his face away and cleared his throat. "It was Yin who came to find me at the Shen Manor and said you fell from a tree and had a headache."
His voice trembled as he looked at me with red eyes. "How are you? Are you feeling any discomfort?"
A warmth spread through my heart as I gently reassured him, "Brother, don't worry. I just fell from the tree and bumped my head. The doctor said it's nothing serious."
"I only pretended to have amnesia to tease them because they were so anxious."
Zhao Mingcheng's expression relaxed before he realized something. "So you haven't lost your memory?"
I smiled mischievously. "That's right."
He shook his head in exasperation but with affection.
Looking around to ensure no one else was present, I whispered, "Brother, actually, these past few years, Xiao Hang and Xiao Yin haven't treated me well; they're just slightly better than the servants. It was also Xiao Yin's fault for climbing the tree that caused me to fall."
Zhao Mingcheng's gaze darkened slightly as he paused before responding softly, "Yes, I know."
I was startled. "You know?"
