After Liang Lin became Xiao Yin's music teacher, Xiao Hang had already drafted the divorce agreement. He could hardly wait to rid himself of me and pursue Liang Lin once again. He was my husband, and I was his wife.
I made my way to his study, where he was painting. I calmly said, "I agree to the divorce." His hand paused mid-stroke.
Counselor Zhang brought over the newly written Divorce Agreement. I glanced at it and quickly signed my name with the brush that Counselor Zhang handed me.
Xiao Hang stared at the Divorce Agreement, hesitating to sign. I said lightly, "If Master Pei is not satisfied, we can draft another."
With a cold expression, Xiao Hang signed his name. I tucked the Divorce Agreement away and casually remarked, "Return all my dowry; I will no longer appear before you and Yin."
Xiao Hang's anger vanished in an instant as he looked at me in surprise. "You really agree?"
I smiled slightly. "I agreed; no more meetings with Yin."
Xiao Hang frowned. "Zhao Xiaoxiao, are you plotting something again?"
I chuckled softly. "What could I possibly be plotting? Xiao Hang, I wish you and Liang Lin a lifetime of happiness and many children."
Xiao Hang scrutinized me, trying to find signs of sadness or heartbreak on my face. But there were none. My expression was calm and open.
His frown deepened further.
In a low voice, he said, "You may have lost me, but you've gained the entire Duke's Residence. You should feel happy."
I nodded. "You're right."
Seeing my indifferent demeanor only made him more agitated. He said coldly, "What happened today must not be disclosed."
Counselor Zhang replied respectfully, "Yes."
Xiao Hang ordered, "You may leave now."
" Counselor Zhang, step aside."
Xiao Hang scoffed, "Zhao Xiaoxiao, what are you throwing a tantrum about? I’m not really leaving you with Yin. Do you really think you've lost your memory?"
I replied earnestly, "I'm not throwing a tantrum."
Xiao Hang huffed and turned to leave.
I called out to him, "Xiao Hang, I’ll call you husband one last time. I hope you and Liang Lin can be together well. Don’t let her down again."
Xiao Hang paused for a moment before striding away.
Counselor Zhang caught up to him, hesitating to speak.
Xiao Hang coldly said, "No need to persuade me. She’s just being childish. Once she remembers me and Yin, she’ll be begging for my forgiveness."
Counselor Zhang replied, "Sir, the Divorce Agreement has been signed. Why don’t you…"
Xiao Hang interrupted him with a stern face, "Does she really think that losing her memory gives her the right to do as she pleases? I won’t give in to her whims."
Counselor Zhang hesitated, "But the Divorce Agreement…"
Xiao Hang snapped back, "It’s just a trick she’s pl Yin g."
Counselor Zhang dared not say another word. He could see that Xiao Hang was angry, but he didn’t know what was causing it.
Counselor Zhang thought Zhao Xiaoxiao had truly lost her memory, which was why Xiao Hang had hastily signed the papers. But Xiao Hang believed Zhao Xiaoxiao was faking it, which was why he was so upset.
I returned to Duke's Residence.
In my chamber, after dealing with household matters, I gazed out at the round moon outside the window. My eyes felt slightly moist.
I was once a noble lady but had married Xiao Hang, a fifth-rank official. Now we were separated.
I thought I would feel happy about this, but instead, I wanted to cry.
I rubbed my eyes and looked up at the moon casting its cold light in the sky.
Xiao Hang is my husband, yet he treats me as if I don’t exist. He allows Xiao Yin to call others mother. He is indifferent to both me and Xiao Yin.
I have completely lost hope in him.
I want to leave the capital and find a secluded corner to live alone.
In the courtyard, Zhao Mingcheng gazes at the window of my room, where the light flickers, his expression somber.
When I was young, I was bullied, and he would help me retaliate. When I was punished and made to kneel in the ancestral hall, he would accompany me. He took pity on me for being so young and having lost my parents, so he cared for me especially. I regarded him as an older brother. Yet, he secretly envied the deep bond between me and Xiao Hang.
Now, like him, I have become a solitary figure.
I lie on the concubine's couch, tossing and turning, unable to sleep as memories flood back.
Liang Lin is my close friend and also Xiao Hang's first love. Xiao Yin is my daughter; she is clever and bright but has misunderstood me because of Xiao Hang and Liang Lin. She speaks to me with sharp words.
I thought she would be overjoyed at Liang Lin's arrival, yet I have seen her secretly hiding in a corner, crying. I know she still cares about me as her mother. When she learned of my troubles, she told me not to pretend, but her eyes were red with unshed tears.
Xiao Hang brought Xiao Yin and Liang Lin to see me. Xiao Yin held Liang Lin's hand and called her "Mother" in a sweet voice. Xiao Hang did not correct her. His probing gaze fell on my face, as if trying to discern whether my amnesia was real or feigned.
I continued to pretend not to recognize them.
Xiao Hang impatiently urged me to stop pretending, s Yin g it was a tactic I often used. I feigned sadness and turned away to wipe my tears.
Without hesitation, Xiao Hang left with Xiao Yin and Liang Lin.
