While one group of police officers continued to interrogate Zhang Moukang, another team arrived at the grave of Zhang Jian's mother to conduct an investigation.
Not far from the grave, the police noticed some irregularities in the soil. After digging through the disturbed earth, they discovered bloodstains and signs that someone had knelt there.
Following extensive investigation, several more pools of blood were found at the scene, clearly indicating that this was the primary location of the incident.
Although the exact cause of Zhang Jian's death was still unknown, it was evident that it was not a traffic accident.
Upon learning that the police had located the scene of the incident, Zhang Moukang confessed to killing his son, Zhang Jian.
According to Zhang Moukang, on the night before the incident, his son had mentioned wanting to visit his mother's grave. In recent days, Zhang Jian had frequently dreamed about his mother warning him of something ominous. Therefore, they set out at 5 AM the next morning.
During their journey, nothing unpleasant occurred; however, while approaching their destination, they encountered a rough stretch of road that caused the vehicle to scrape its undercarriage.
When he asked his son to check the undercarriage, he assumed Zhang Jian had moved away from behind the vehicle. As he began to reverse, he accidentally ran over his son, who was lying on the ground.
But was that really what happened?
The police reconstructed the scene of the incident and found that Zhang Jian was already an adult with a head diameter of approximately 20 cm. The distance from the ground to the car's undercarriage was only 10 cm, making it impossible for Zhang Jian's head to fit underneath the vehicle. Therefore, it was impossible for him to have been crushed by it; Zhang Moukang was lying to the police.
Through further investigation at the scene, officers discovered an iron pipe several dozen meters away from the bloodstains, which also bore traces of blood.
The investigating officers suspected that this iron pipe was the murder weapon used by Zhang Moukang.
The police immediately brought Zhang Moukang to the interrogation room and initiated a hands-free call with the officers on-site.
Upon learning that the police had found his tools of the crime, Zhang Moukang realized there was no room left for him to argue and recounted the events of the Incident Occurrence once again.
He maintained that at the time, his son had gotten out of the car to check the undercarriage, and while he was reversing, he accidentally bumped into him. His son then yelled at him, and although he intended to lecture his son, he did not expect his son to grab a metal pipe from the trunk and attack him.
This infuriated Zhang Moukang, leading to a heated argument between them. During the struggle, he seized the iron rod and struck his son, inadvertently killing him in the process.
However, Zhang Jian stood at 1.8 meters tall and weighed over 200 pounds; at just 21 years old, his physical strength far surpassed that of his father, who was in his forties.
"He's in his twenties, I'm in my forties; our physical conditions are not on the same level. If they were fighting, there's no way he could have overpowered his son," he insisted.
Moreover, upon examining Zhang Jian's body, seven fatal wounds were discovered on his head, some of which overlapped. More importantly, all these injuries were concentrated at the back of his head, with no other wounds found on his body.
If their confrontation had occurred as Zhang Moukang described, the injuries would likely have been on the front of his head rather than at the back.
Given this evidence, it appeared that Zhang Jian had been ambushed and killed unexpectedly. All signs pointed to Zhang Moukang having deliberately murdered his own son.
While the cause of Zhang Jian's death seemed clear, what could have motivated Zhang Moukang to commit such an act?
Previous investigations revealed that Zhang Moukang had a very good temperament and that their family was harmonious with decent financial stability. Why would he kill his own flesh and blood?
After extensive inquiries, a shocking conspiracy began to surface. On the day of the Incident Occurrence, Zhang Moukang had made three phone calls: the first was to his current wife, the second to an insurance company, and the last one was to traffic police. Notably, this insurance call was not related to vehicle insurance.
After the police arrived at the insurance company and conducted their investigation, the findings left the officers astonished.
Just a week before the incident, Zhang Moukang had purchased an accident insurance policy for his son, with himself as both the policyholder and beneficiary. Additionally, he had taken out three other accident insurance policies with different companies. If Zhang Jian were to die in an accident, Zhang Moukang would receive a compensation of 1.5 million.
Considering that Zhang Moukang claimed his son had accidentally fallen from a vehicle, and after inquiring about the insurance claims process, the police suspected that Zhang Moukang had staged the accident to commit insurance fraud. However, they found it hard to believe he would harm his own son.
The officers felt that this case might involve insurance fraud, but on one hand was the bond of family—his own son—and on the other was the hefty sum of 1.5 million, representing a living child's life. It seemed implausible.
Yet, faced with overwhelming evidence, what could be said in defense? According to Zhang Moukang, although he appeared wealthy to outsiders, he was actually struggling financially.
Zhang Moukang had several mistresses and had spent over 200,000 on them in recent years alone.
When the police contacted one of his mistresses, she stated, "Zhang Moukang said he needed to step out for a bit and promised to give me at least 300,000 when he returned, along with a designer handbag."
During questioning, just four or five days before the incident, she mentioned to her lover, "I have to go out for a while to take care of something; when I come back, I’ll give you at least 300,000."
However, when the police confronted Zhang Moukang about this matter, he denied any such claims.
Regarding the fact that he had killed his own son, Zhang Moukang expressed remorse but did not shed a single tear.
But when the police informed him that the 1.5 million insurance payout had nothing to do with him, Zhang Moukang broke down in tears.
