The police had sealed off her father's traditional Chinese medicine shop, yet over the past few days, some patients' families still found their way to the Shui Family.
With her mother passing away early and her father being arrested, all responsibilities fell on Shui Qingyue's shoulders. She was ultimately just a woman, unable to bear so much alone.
Fortunately, there was Xiao Luocheng. Ever since he brought her back, he had stayed with the Shui Family, protecting her in the role of an older brother. He eagerly took on many tasks.
"Miss Qingyue, it's bad! Someone is breaking down the front door with a piece of wood! They're rushing in!" Aunt Lin burst into the living room, panic written all over her face. Upon hearing this, Shui Qingyue stood up, ready to see what was happening outside, but Xiao Luocheng pulled her back forcefully.
"Let me go!" He held her tightly in his embrace, his brow furrowed with concern.
As Xiao Luocheng stepped outside, Shui Qingyue and Aunt Lin followed closely behind.
Outside the Shui Family's gate, a crowd had gathered. As soon as the door opened, rotten eggs and vegetable scraps began flying in one after another.
Xiao Luocheng stood protectively in front of Shui Qingyue, holding her hands tightly as chaos erupted outside the courtyard.
"Everyone! Please calm down and listen to me!" Xiao Luocheng turned his face away, displaying an unusual calmness.
"Doctor Shui has been arrested. The matter will be investigated thoroughly, and we will ensure justice is served. Here is some money; please take it to handle your loved ones' affairs," he said. Gradually, the noise outside the Shui Family's gate began to quiet down.
The crowd accepted the money and dispersed one by one.
A sharp beam of light pierced through the distance, landing on Shui Qingyue and Xiao Luocheng.
He was about to turn and lead her inside when a familiar voice rang out behind them. The three pairs of eyes—Xiao Luocheng, Shui Qingyue, and Aunt Lin—turned toward the source of the sound.
"Young Master, Miss, please have mercy and buy a painting. My family is gone, and I have to rely on myself to make a living."
It was the same frail young girl. Shui Qingyue suddenly remembered that she had bought flowers from her in the hospital; it seemed the girl’s life was quite difficult.
"Luo Chen, let’s buy one. Give her some extra money; this child looks quite pitiful."
Qingyue took the painting from the girl’s hands and examined it closely.
Though the technique was immature, it was already rare for someone her age. It was a portrait, featuring only a face with no other distinguishing features.
Shui Qingyue stared at the painting for a moment before following Xiao Luocheng into the house.
Days passed, and her father had still not been released. The matter regarding the Shui Family's herbal medicine shop had stirred up quite a commotion throughout Great Shanghai. Several newspapers had come knocking, clamoring for Doctor Shui's daughter, Shui Qingyue, to step forward and clarify things, but all requests were firmly rejected by Xiao Luocheng.
Qingyue was taken to a Western-style clinic where he had recently set up his practice while shielding her from the storm outside.
Now that Qingyue could no longer stay at home, he brought her to the clinic.
Every day, Qingyue wore Xiao Luocheng's white coat and a blue mask, which helped to conceal some of her distress.
However, ever since her head injury, she often felt inexplicably dizzy and misinterpreted things. She had never mentioned this to Xiao Luocheng.
Perhaps it was due to the immense pressure, or maybe it was a lingering effect of the injury.
Before arriving at Xiao Luocheng's clinic, Qingyue made sure to bring along the bouquet of flowers as well.
She wasn't sure what kind of flowers they were, but they emitted a wonderfully fragrant scent. Even after all these days, the flowers looked as fresh as if they had just been picked, showing no signs of wilting.
She also brought the painting she had purchased from the little girl.
