Xiao Luocheng's Western Medicine Clinic was thriving. His medical skills were exceptional, and he was kind-hearted, charging very little for his services, which quickly earned him a small reputation.
Qingyue stayed in the clinic, watching the patients come and go, her thoughts drifting back to her father.
Their family’s traditional Chinese medicine shop had been closed for some time now, with all the herbs taken away for inspection.
However, the results showed nothing wrong. The police could not find any reason for the closure and struggled to face the families of the patients. For the time being, they had no choice but to keep Shui Qingyue's father detained.
“Qingyue, I just received a call. A patient has caught a cold and needs my attention. Stay here and don’t go out; I’ll be back soon,” Xiao Luocheng said as he grabbed his emergency kit and stood at the door, advising Qingyue.
She nodded and waved her hand. “Go quickly!”
Not long after Xiao Luocheng left, the glass door of the clinic was pushed open by a patient coming in for treatment. Shui Qingyue quickly got up and walked out from the back room.
“Doctor Xiao is out on a house call. Please have a seat for a moment,” she explained calmly.
“Miss, don’t you remember me? You bought flowers and paintings from me a few days ago.”
A wave of fragrant scent wafted into her nostrils—still that floral aroma.
But for some reason, her head began to spin. She looked up, wanting to reach out for the flowers that the little girl was handing her.
However, in an instant, her vision was filled with half of a burned face, blood trickling down. The other half had already stiffened, and a strange smile twisted at the corner of its mouth.
Shui Qingyue's body trembled slightly as she took a step back, her palm pressed against the table, barely managing to keep herself from collapsing.
"What... what are you?"
There was an unmistakable terror in her voice. She shook her hand, pointing at the horrifying blood-soaked face before her. Yet, that terrifying visage paid no heed to her words, slowly inching closer, extending a pair of pale, emaciated hands...
"Ah..." Shui Qingyue screamed hoarsely, clutching her head as her body slid down.
After a long while, when all sounds had faded away, she opened her eyes.
The scene before her had returned to its original state, as if nothing had ever happened, except for the fragrant flowers lying quietly on the ground.
Rubbing her aching temples, Shui Qingyue slowly opened her eyes to find herself surrounded by pristine white walls. She lay on a white hospital bed that glowed softly.
"You’re awake, Qingyue!"
She simply replied with a soft "mm," thinking it was Xiao Luocheng.
Turning her head, she finally recognized the familiar face she hadn't seen in a long time. "Dad, when did you come out? I didn’t know!"
She excitedly rushed over and leaned on her father's shoulder, unable to hold back her tears.
"Alright, Qingyue. We’ve figured everything out. Our medicinal herbs are fine and all the prescriptions are correct; it’s no longer our concern. Qingyue, Luo Chen told me you fainted at the clinic. You've been worrying about your dad during this time."
Tears glistened in the middle-aged man's eyes as he patted Qingyue's back, his gaze moist.
“Dad, how did you find me?”
“Aunt Lin told me. Qingyue, Luo Chen is a good kid. He was the one who brought you to the hospital when you fainted at the clinic, and now he's gone back to make porridge for you…”
The middle-aged man wanted to say more, but Qingyue covered his mouth.
She was well aware of Xiao Luocheng's kindness. However, as a daughter, she didn't want her feelings to be easily uncovered.
“Dad, did our family offend someone outside? Otherwise, why would all these strange things happen to us?”
Her words struck like lightning, causing the man sitting by the hospital bed to shudder. Certain memories seemed to tear open in his mind, revealing a scene from long ago.
He had a twin brother. On that noon when their herbal medicine shop had just opened, he was called back home urgently by his father due to a family matter.
Before leaving, he asked his brother to watch over the shop for him.
But when he returned, he found a young woman lying in the inner hall, one side of her face severely burned.
