"Hey, Senior Brother, do you think there are any demons in the back mountain? My Demon Catching Bell has been ringing non-stop lately, and the demonic energy at the back door is so strong!"
"Yeah, it's strange. My Demon Catching Bell is ringing too, and listen, the sound is getting louder."
Looking at the few young Taoists standing at the back door of Qingcheng Mountain, I hesitated and pulled my fox foot back.
Sure enough, the sound of the Demon Catching Bell was gradually weakening; it seemed this path was not safe.
I lifted my chin and hid in a pile of grass, glancing around. It looked like if I jumped over that wall, I would land right in Rong Youdao's courtyard.
Watching those Taoists still fiddling with their Demon Catching Bells, I seized the opportunity to sneak around to the corner of Rong Youdao's wall and then leaped with all my might along the wall.
However, I didn't expect that another part of the wall was covered in formations. As soon as I jumped into Rong Youdao's courtyard, I was instantly knocked to the ground by the formation within.
Spells, talismans, and formations came at me one after another; I was trapped in the Bagua Formation, unable to move, and my mouth was almost wet with saliva from the letter I was holding.
Damn it, where did Rong Youdao go? What’s with setting up such a complicated formation in his own courtyard for no reason?
I waited until dark before the small door of Rong Youdao's courtyard finally creaked open.
As soon as he stepped inside, Rong Youdao froze for a moment, staring at me lying in the middle of his courtyard with a letter in my mouth and three fiery red tails behind me, looking somewhat dazed.
But he quickly regained his composure: "Is that you? Nan Shan?" As he spoke, Rong Youdao approached me and began to dismantle the formation layer by layer.
As the formation was retracted, my body, which had been restrained, slowly regained its ability to move.
Just as I stood up from the ground, I shook myself, sending all the dust that had settled on my fox fur onto Rong Youdao beside me.
Seeing the little black specks on his white clothes, my mood suddenly improved significantly.
"What are you doing in my courtyard?" Rong Youdao suddenly looked down at me.
I spat out the letter I had in my mouth, opened my fox mouth, and said with a hint of resentment, "Isn't it because your fellow disciples captured my demonic aura at the back door of Qingcheng Mountain using the Demon Catching Bell? Now I can't freely enter or exit the back door of your Qingcheng Mountain Taoist Temple. What if they catch me?"
Rong Youdao fell silent again.
Straining to lift my neck, I glanced at my fox fur behind me, feeling a bit uncomfortable. I continued, "And what’s up with this formation of yours? Look at how tangled my fiery red fur is getting."
For some reason, Rong Youdao suddenly smiled. He knelt down on one knee and patted my head.
To my surprise, I leaned into him and even rubbed against his palm.
What the hell am I doing? I'm a fox, not a dog!
But my actions were faster than my thoughts; it was already done.
Only after I finished rubbing against him did I realize what I had done. I quickly turned away with an air of pride, sweeping Rong Youdao's hand off with my three large tails. Turning halfway around, I said haughtily, "You need to retract the formation in your courtyard. I still have to deliver messages to Cang Ming and Ms.Liu, and I need to come through your side."
Rong Youdao paused for a moment and asked, "What do you mean by sending a message to Senior Brother and Ms.Liu?"
I felt a surge of anger at that. "I've been delivering letters to them for half a month now; it's exhausting for this fox! Who else could it be? It's just about your Senior Brother Cang Ming and Ms.Liu, isn't it? I've risked my life to repay a favor, and look at my paw."
As I spoke, I lifted my dark fox paw for Rong Youdao to see. "Look at my claws; they're almost blistered from all this running. This past half month has nearly worn me out!"
Seeing the blisters on my paw, Rong Youdao immediately pulled me into his arms and said, "Alright, since you're so tired, I'll carry you there myself."
"Why would you carry me? You don't need to; just deliver the letter to Cang Ming," I protested as I struggled to jump out of Rong Youdao's embrace. I then swept the letter that had fallen to the ground with my tail and placed it in front of him.
After doing all that, I happily bounded out of Rong Youdao's courtyard.
Because I left in such a hurry, I didn't notice that Rong Youdao was watching my departing figure with a gentle smile on his face.
