197... 198... 199... 200.
"Phew~" I let out a sigh.
Exhausted, I collapsed on the ground, took a breather, and then got up, opened the window, and it was already dawn outside.
I did another 200 squats, regulated my breathing, and it seems like my cold is almost gone. My physical condition is recovering quite well.
At 7:30 in the morning, this is usually the busy time when kids go to school and adults head to work during the morning rush hour. The elevators are constantly going up and down, there are the sounds of the footsteps of the elderly going downstairs in the hallway, the neighbors are closing their doors one after another, there's the bustling chatter downstairs in the community, and the continuous roar and honking of cars on the road. Now, all of this has fallen silent.
As I look out the window and watch the sun rise from the east, I suddenly feel an inexplicable discomfort in my heart.
I opened my phone, and Lao K had already sent me the coordinates of all the shelters in the suburb last night. He had also made reservations for me. I scrolled through the map on my phone, starting to plan the best route to the nearest shelter. I was in Panlong City, a super metropolis.
The entire city covers an area of about 35,000 square kilometers, with a permanent population of over 60 million. It is divided into 30 districts, including 10 central urban districts, 15 sub-central urban districts, and 5 suburban districts.
The entire city is based on the ten central urban districts, extending outward in a radial pattern. The winding "S"-shaped Songming River flows from west to east through the center of Panlong City, dividing it into four relatively independent yet closely connected administrative regions along with its two tributaries, Songnan River and Qing River.
I am located in the Songnan District, which is situated at the confluence of the Songming River and the Songnan River, forming an angle. It is one of the ten central urban areas. According to the map provided by Lao K, the nearest shelter is located in the northwestern outlying suburbs. To reach there, I must first pass through the four central urban areas: Songnan, Jiangbei, Wangpu, and Shangqing.
At the same time, you have to cross the Songming River, then pass through the seven sub-central urban areas of Pujiang, Xia mountain, Liufang, Gin Long Ridge, Shengde, Rongbei, and Qiu meng Mountain. Finally, follow the Autumn Dream North Road extending from the Qiu meng Mountain area, head north, cross the Seventh Ring Road, and then head west to enter the adjacent outlying suburbs. The military's designated centralized shelter is located in the Wangyuan mountain World Forest Park in the outlying suburbs. I roughly measured the distance from my current location in Songnan District to the outlying suburbs on the map, and the straight-line distance alone exceeds 100 kilometers.
If you usually travel from my side, it takes 2 hours to transfer without traffic jams by subway and light rail. If you take a taxi or drive by yourself, in the absence of traffic jams, it will take at least 3 hours with a conservative estimate of twists and turns. If there is traffic, it's impossible to estimate.
This is only the straight-line distance. The actual travel distance is definitely more than 140 kilometers, and this is an optimistic estimate without considering various unexpected situations and uncertain factors that require detours.
I'm staring at this route, feeling a bit apprehensive.
Walking more than 140 kilometers in 7 days would be considered a hike under normal circumstances, and for me, it wouldn't be stressful. But now, in this perilous Dystopian city, you never know what unknown dangers you might encounter on the road ahead. I looked at several other directions for shelter, and apart from the northwest, there are four shelters in the suburbs in the northeast, east, Due south, and southwest directions.
I won't even mention the northeast and due east directions, they are too far away. Especially traveling from the due east direction to the outskirts of Lu Ming Ravine, the straight-line distance from my current location in Songnan District to there is already over 250 kilometers. Along the way, I have to pass through 7 central urban areas, 10 sub-central urban areas, and almost cross the entire Panlong City from west to east. The distance is too far and the danger level is too high.
The remaining directions are Due south and southwest, and the straight-line distance to the Due south direction is also over 200 kilometers. Moreover, along the way, one has to pass through places with extremely high human traffic and dense crowds such as Zhengnan Railway Station, Intercontinental Airport, and Sanjiang Shipping Center, so the lurking crisis can be imagined. Finally, there is the southwest direction leading to Feng Ling Lake District. The distance from my current location in Songnan District to there is approximately 170 kilometers, which is about 30 kilometers more than the distance to outlying suburbs in the northwest direction, and this is not even considering detours.
You have to pass through 4 central urban areas and 6 sub-central urban areas along the way, and also cross the Songnan River. You have to cross the seventh ring road to finally reach the centralized shelter located in the Feng Ling Lake District.
The most famous part of the Feng Ling Lake District is the Feng Ling Lake, which covers an area of over 6,000 square kilometers. In the center of the lake, there is a Feng Ling Island, which used to be a villa area for the wealthy and a leisure tourism area. I went there with my ex-girlfriend two years ago, and the scenery was very beautiful.
Now it should be under military control and set up as a centralized shelter.
The reason for setting this place as a centralized shelter, I speculate that the military must have valued the geographical conditions of the water here. It is currently unclear whether the monsters after the Corpse change can swim, but from my several encounters with the monsters, it seems that they mostly rely on instinctive reactions to move, so the possibility of them being able to swim is low. Therefore, using such a vast water area as a natural barrier and setting Feng Ling Island as a shelter is undoubtedly an excellent choice.
I pondered the route to Feng Ling Lake, which is 170 kilometers away, stroking my chin in contemplation. Considering the area I have to cross starting from Songnan District, it's all old urban areas, basically avoiding all the central bustling areas of Panlong City, which is the best way to avoid highly dense areas and potential high-risk zones. Looking at it this way, undoubtedly this route is also very good. However, the additional 30-plus kilometers (which will definitely be more in reality) will bring who knows what encounters. At this time, it's definitely best to stay away from the city center.
So I pondered and weighed my options, and ultimately decided to designate this route as the backup route. If the route to the outlying suburbs shelter becomes impassable or encounters major obstacles, then I will backtrack and head to the Feng Ling Island shelter. It's best to leave the city center first, reach the vicinity of the Sixth or Seventh Ring Road, and then find a vehicle to head south to Feng Ling Island.
Both of these ring roads are the Beltway Expressway. I've traveled them before, and the routes are very familiar. Usually, the traffic flow is not heavy, and I can easily speed up to 100 miles per hour. I can drive south for two hours and arrive at Feng Ling Island without any problems. However, now I am most worried that the Beltway Expressway may be completely congested.
Just as I was almost done studying the route, I stood up and stretched. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, it seemed like something "whooshed" past the window. Before I could react, I heard a loud "bang," followed by the sound of car alarms.
I glanced out the window and saw a figure lying on the roof of my car, writhing in pain and making agonizing cries. The roof was dented from the impact. My first thought was that this was a person, not a monster. It was clear that the person was seriously injured, but it was too risky for anyone to go and help them in the face of potential monster attacks.
Soon I heard a piercing scream of extreme pain and "crunch, crunch" tearing sounds, apparently monsters had surrounded the area. The person must have been hiding at home in extreme panic, completely driven insane, and finally chose to jump off the building to commit suicide, but the attempt failed. But what I'm worried about now is that my car has been smashed and totaled by him. How the hell am I going to escape?
As soon as I went downstairs, I started walking, and then I was chased by a group of monsters. But as the tragic scene of living people being driven crazy and choosing to jump off the building occurred, I realized that it was time to leave here.
