Beastly Hearts 2: My Outburst

My husband seemed to sense my discomfort, so he privately communicated with my father-in-law a few times. However, my father-in-law remained stubborn in his attitude. Helpless, my husband turned to me and said, "Honey, just bear with it for a while. My dad is getting old and his thoughts might be outdated; don't take it too seriously." 0

Seeing my husband acknowledge my struggles made all my anger dissipate. I could endure; I could give, but I feared one-sided sacrifices. Now that my husband understood, I felt empowered again. I gritted my teeth, reminding myself that my father-in-law was only here for a short while, and if I could just hold on, it would pass. 0

After dinner, while I was tidying up in the kitchen, my father-in-law returned with a displeased expression. "How can you leave the dishes by the sink? That's so dirty!" he exclaimed. 0

I explained helplessly, "Dad, I haven't finished washing them yet. I'll clean up soon." 0

"By the time you're done, bacteria will have multiplied," he scoffed. "You young people are just too lazy." 0

I bit my lip and stayed silent. Noticing my lack of response, he continued, "And your job—always coming home late—what kind of behavior is that? A woman should stay at home to take care of her husband, cook, and do laundry instead of being out in public." 0

I finally couldn't hold back any longer and retorted, "Dad, in this day and age, women can have their own careers too. My job isn't easy either; you can't say that about me." 0

My father-in-law's eyes widened in anger as he shouted, "You dare talk back? I'm your elder! You uncultured brat!" 0

I trembled with rage, ready to argue further when my husband walked in. 0

"What’s going on?" he asked, puzzled. 0

"Look at the good wife you found! She dares to contradict me!" my father-in-law pointed at me angrily. 0

My husband quickly tried to mediate. "Dad, please don’t be angry; Siqi didn’t mean it that way. Siqi, apologize to Dad right now." 0

"I didn’t do anything wrong; why should I apologize?" I replied indignantly, frustrated that he didn’t even ask for context before demanding an apology. 0

"See? She still talks back!" My father-in-law's face turned red with fury. 0

Seeing my firm stance, my husband shifted his focus back to calming his father. "Dad, don’t hold it against her; that's just her personality. She's actually a good person; please be more understanding." 0

With a cold huff, my father-in-law fell silent. My husband quickly pulled him out of the kitchen and into another room. 0

Watching their retreating figures made my eyes sting with unshed tears as I endured the insults and accusations from my father-in-law. Was I being foolish? It was just that I didn’t want my husband to feel caught in the middle! 0

Once the cleaning was done, I sank onto the sofa to rest. 0

My husband and father-in-law came out of the room. My father-in-law glanced at me and snorted before turning on the television. 0

My husband then said to me, "Siqi, Dad mentioned that you've been so busy with work lately that you've neglected the family. I think you should consider whether it's time to switch to a less stressful job." 0

I narrowed my eyes at him and replied coolly, "You think Dad doesn't know about the pressure of work? Do you really believe switching jobs is as easy as you make it sound?" 0

"We're just worried about you; we don't want you to be so exhausted," my husband said, frowning. 0

"You work late every day too; why don’t you switch to an easier job?" I scoffed, finding his words insincere. 0

"We're talking about your situation here; why are you bringing me into this?" he retorted, his brow furrowing. "We care about you and your health; it's all for your own good." 0

"Caring about me?" I let out a cold laugh. "Is mocking and insulting me your way of showing concern?" 0

His expression changed abruptly. "How can you say that? Am I not good to you?" 0

"Good? Are you really good to me?" I stared at him, questioning. "If you truly cared, would you let me endure your father's insults and accusations? Would you ask me to give up my career? Chen Yifei, if you don't want to live well with me, just say it directly instead of beating around the bush." 0

He fell silent. 0

At six o'clock, the door lock clicked, and I shot a cold glance toward it; my husband was back. 0

"Oh, you're home early today," I remarked. 0

He glanced at me but said nothing, heading straight into the kitchen to start cooking. 0

Listening to the sounds coming from the kitchen, I looked over in confusion. He was cooking, and the wall I'd built in my heart began to crumble a little. 0

Had I misunderstood him? 0

I reassured myself and set aside my thoughts to continue working, believing that time would prove everything. 0

Before long, my husband called me for dinner. 0

I walked over to the dining table and was taken aback by what I saw—he had prepared all my favorite dishes. 0

"Did you make all of this?" I asked in surprise. 0

He nodded. "Yeah, give it a try and see how it tastes." 0

I picked up my chopsticks and took a piece of fish into my mouth. The flavor was exquisite. 0

"It's delicious," I exclaimed in admiration. 0

He smiled slightly. "Then eat more." 0

I nodded and began to eat heartily. My husband watched me with a smile on his face, and I felt a warm sensation in my heart. I was getting ready to head back to the bedroom when he suddenly called out to me. 0

"Siqi, wait a moment," he said as he sat up. 0

"Hmm?" I looked at him in confusion. 0

He hesitated for a moment before saying, "Siqi, Dad is getting older, and he's a bit stubborn. Please don't take it personally." 0

Hearing his words reminded me of how he had cooked for me to comfort me. "I understand; I won't mind," I replied. "Why isn't Dad coming back for dinner?" 0

He nodded. "I booked a restaurant and invited some of Dad's friends over for a meal so they could catch up." 0

I smiled and turned to walk into the room. After thinking for a long time, I finally decided that starting tomorrow, I would make an effort to improve my relationship with my father-in-law so that my husband wouldn't have to worry. After all, he was trying hard too. 0

The next day, I woke up early and started preparing breakfast for the family. As I set the table, I saw my father-in-law walking out of his room. 0

"Dad, breakfast is ready," I said with a smile. 0

He glanced at me but didn't say anything; instead, he sat down at the dining table directly. I felt a bit uncomfortable but held it in. I walked over to the table and served him a bowl of porridge. 0

"Dad, try this porridge; I made it just for you," I said cheerfully. 0

He took the bowl, had a sip, and immediately spat it out. "What is this porridge? It's terrible!" he exclaimed sharply. 0

I messaged my husband: "Dad loves your cooking, but everything I make—sweet, sour, bitter, spicy—none of it suits his taste. To make sure Dad doesn't go hungry, I'll leave the meals to you three times a day!" 0
