At that moment, my husband walked in through the door.
"Can't sleep?" he asked.
I nodded.
He lay down beside me and gently wrapped his arms around me.
"Don't think about it, just sleep," he whispered in my ear.
I felt his warmth, and my heart stirred.
It had been a long time since we had been close.
Ever since my father-in-law arrived, our relationship had been strained.
I couldn't help but recall my father-in-law's words.
Maybe I really should consider having a child.
When I finally decided to prioritize this and prepare for a check-up to conceive, something happened that made me put that thought on hold.
On Sunday, my husband mentioned he would be working overtime, and I told him not to overexert himself.
While shopping for groceries at the supermarket, I ran into one of his colleagues.
He looked at the items in my cart and laughed, "No wonder Yi Fei rushes home after work; having a wife is a blessing!"
"You're welcome to come over sometime," I invited with a smile.
"Sure, definitely."
I glanced at the time and realized it matched the time on the note, which made me feel uneasy.
I asked my brother to go to the time and place mentioned on the previous slip of paper to see what was going on, instructing him not to follow too closely and to ensure his safety.
As I watched television, my thoughts drifted away.
The phone rang, and I answered it.
"Sis, there's a group of people discussing how to raise animals—how to train kittens, get them to eat, use the litter box, and so on. Is there something going on between you and Yi Fei? Why are you following him?"
"It's nothing; it's just a misunderstanding because he went out without telling me," I replied, not wanting to worry my brother or parents since things were still uncertain.
"It’s definitely wrong not to tell you; in the future, let me know if something's up, and I'll keep an eye on him for you."
My brother didn't suspect anything, and I let out a sigh of relief.
I had never realized that my husband liked pets, and I didn't mind having one either! So why had he never mentioned it? Was he lying to attend some event? I was completely baffled.
When I returned home, I found my father-in-law arguing with my husband.
"You unfilial son, how dare you defy me!" my father-in-law shouted.
"Dad, please don't push me. I don't want to do these things anymore," my husband replied.
"You don't want to do these? Then what do you want to do?" my father-in-law asked.
"I just want to be a good husband and take care of Siqi," my husband said.
Hearing his words touched me deeply.
"How dare you go against me!" my father-in-law exclaimed angrily. "Aren't you afraid I'll expose your secrets?"
What secrets? My heart was filled with confusion.
"Do whatever you want," my husband said coldly.
"You ungrateful child!" my father-in-law cursed in fury.
I pushed the door open and looked at both of them, asking, "What are you two arguing about?"
Upon seeing me enter, my father-in-law immediately fell silent.
"My husband thinks you're still hesitating about having children and suggested waiting a few more years, but Dad wasn't happy about it," my husband explained.
"Hmph!" My father-in-law shot us a glare before leaving.
I felt a surge of emotion and blurted out, "Actually, we can consider having children sooner."
My husband hugged me tightly, saying, "Wife, you're so wonderful!"
"Not that it has to happen right away; at least let me sort out my work first, get a health check-up, and take care of my body," I said as I pushed him away gently since he was holding me too tightly.
"Of course, that's only right."
The next day at work, someone sent me a message saying the Editor wanted to see me, so I went to the Editor's office, but the Editor wasn't there.
