Upon returning to my apartment, I carefully removed my makeup and changed into comfortable loungewear before dialing Gu Junjie’s number.
To make Gu Junjie let his guard down completely, I put on the act of a lovesick woman, obediently catering to his every whim.
“Junjie, I’ve talked to my parents about us. They’re really happy and plan to personally handle our wedding,” I said softly, my voice laced with a hint of playful sarcasm.
On the other end of the line, Gu Junjie was clearly ecstatic, his voice trembling with excitement. “Really? Vivi, that’s wonderful! I… I’m so happy!”
I smiled slightly and continued, “But I have a little idea. Since we don’t have to worry about the wedding, how about we go on our honeymoon to Aocheng ahead of time? What do you think?”
“Vivi, isn’t a honeymoon supposed to happen after the wedding?”
“But I want to experience the joy of being married in advance, and I’ve heard the casinos there are quite interesting!”
He hesitated for a moment but ultimately couldn’t resist my coaxing.
Hearing him relent, I seized the opportunity to paint an enticing picture: “I also told my parents that when you come back from Aocheng, I’ll help you talk to Dad about getting you a job at Lin Group since you’ll be our family’s son-in-law.”
Gu Junjie’s tone grew even more excited. “Vivi, you’re so thoughtful! Thank you! I’ll definitely work hard and won’t let you down!”
After hanging up the phone, a cold smile crept onto my lips.
Gu Junjie, oh Gu Junjie, how naively adorable you are, thinking I would fall into your trap again.
In the days that followed, Gu Junjie called or texted me every couple of days to ask about the preparations for the wedding and honeymoon. I always responded nonchalantly, allowing him to bask in the dream of becoming Lin Group’s son-in-law.
Finally, it was time for our departure to Aocheng. Gu Junjie had moved into my apartment a few days earlier, his face brimming with excitement for this honeymoon trip.
“Vivi, don’t worry! Even though I don’t have money right now, I’ll cover all the expenses for this honeymoon trip—even if I have to borrow it!” Gu Junjie looked at me with determination in his eyes.
I smiled and nodded but had other plans in mind. Borrow money? Over four years of college, I couldn’t count how much I had spent on him; how many of his friends were actually wealthy?
Yet somehow, Gu Junjie managed to scrape together 100,000 yuan from them.
I sighed once more at my past self who was hopelessly infatuated—what did I even see in him?
That night upon arriving in Aocheng, we checked into a luxurious hotel.
Gu Junjie appeared unusually excited, as this was his first time in such a lavish place.
“Vivi, are you hungry? How about we go get something to eat?” Gu Junjie said, taking my hand and his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
I feigned a coy smile. “Junjie, I’m not hungry yet. I heard that Aocheng’s casino is quite interesting; why don’t we go there and have some fun?”
Upon hearing this, a flicker of hesitation crossed Gu Junjie’s face, but it was quickly replaced by greed. “A casino? Sure! I’ve heard the atmosphere there is thrilling!”
With that, I led Gu Junjie to the casino.
There were already people waiting for us inside, and upon my arrival, someone immediately stepped forward to greet us.
“Miss Lin, you’re here! Who is this?” a middle-aged man in a suit asked politely.
I pointed to Gu Junjie beside me. “Oh, this is my fiancé, Gu Junjie. We’d like to play a bit; could you please help us arrange that?”
The middle-aged man nodded and smiled at Gu Junjie. “Mr. Gu, what would you like to play?”
Gu Junjie licked his lips, his voice trembling slightly. “Um… just something casual.”
Under the arrangement of the casino staff, we were soon taken to a VIP room.
Inside the room sat a stern-looking middle-aged man with several stacks of thick chips beside him.
“This is my dad’s friend, Uncle Wang, who came specifically to play with you,” I introduced him to Gu Junjie.
“Uncle Wang is quite the Gambling King,” I added. “Junjie, you should learn from him.”
“You’re so smart; you’ll definitely win a lot!” I encouraged him.
As soon as Gu Junjie heard the title Gambling King, his eyes lit up with excitement as if he could already envision himself dominating the game.
“Gamble with Uncle Wang; let’s get started,” Gu Junjie said eagerly as he took a seat.
For the next few hours, Gu Junjie was completely immersed in the thrill of gambling.
Sure enough, after winning a few rounds at the beginning, he gradually became more invested and started increasing his bets.
Meanwhile, I simply sat by and quietly observed everything.
Finally, when Gu Junjie lost all his chips, he looked incredulously at Uncle Wang across the table.
"I... how could I lose?" Gu Junjie murmured to himself.
Uncle Wang shot him a cold glance. "In the gambling world, there are no eternal winners. Mr. Gu, you owe us five million."
"Here’s the IOU, sign it!" Uncle Wang leaned over the table, placing the document in front of Gu Junjie.
At his words, Gu Junjie looked as if he had been struck by lightning, collapsing into his chair.
Watching him in such a disheartened state brought me a sense of satisfaction.
Uncle Wang gave me a reassuring look, and I nodded in gratitude.
It wasn't until I confessed my plans to my parents that I learned he had such a good friend. My mother was upset for several days over it, while my father said he contacted Uncle Wang for my sake, which barely placated her.
Looking back now, Uncle Wang turned out to be reliable.
Beside me, Gu Junjie was sweating profusely, and the tension in my heart finally eased.
"Junjie, don’t be discouraged; maybe next time we can win it back," I softly comforted him, though my eyes were filled with mockery.
Gu Junjie’s face turned pale as he turned to me, desperation in his eyes. "Vivi, please help me!"
"Can you... can you help me sign this?"
I was taken aback that he immediately thought of pushing the debt onto me. Just as I was unsure how to respond, Uncle Wang chuckled.
He raised his hand to signal the bodyguards. "Take this Miss Lin out first!"
I pretended to struggle a bit, looking conflicted before finally gritting my teeth and saying, "I'll ask Dad to help you when I get back."
He nodded repeatedly, tears of gratitude in his eyes, completely oblivious to the cold smile in mine.
