In the depths of the old street, a small café named Silent Café quietly awaited the passing pedestrians.
In the evening, only a few customers lingered inside, and the air was filled with the aroma of roasted coffee beans mixed with an almost imperceptible tension. Silence sat in a corner, gently stirring a freshly brewed latte, her gaze occasionally sweeping towards the dim alley outside.
Suddenly, the tranquility of the night was shattered by hurried footsteps. The bell above the door chimed lightly as a middle-aged man rushed into the café, his expression anxious. "Miss Silence, I need your help," he said, his voice trembling slightly.
Silence looked up, her eyes warm yet sharp. "Please sit down and take your time," she gestured for him to take a seat and poured him a cup of hot tea.
The man's name was Yamada, an editor at a small publishing house. He recounted a bizarre incident: a few days ago, he received an anonymous manuscript that was a mystery novel with a complex and captivating plot. However, as he delved deeper into the story, Yamada discovered that its events bore an uncanny resemblance to several unsolved mysteries in real life, even including some details that had not been made public.
"This can't just be coincidence," Yamada's voice was filled with fear. "I feel like someone is watching me, even manipulating me."
Upon hearing this, Silence furrowed her brow slightly. She took the manuscript from him and began to read it carefully. As she progressed through the pages, her expression grew increasingly serious. Every detail in the manuscript seemed like a meticulously laid trap, drawing one deeper in while making escape impossible.
"Who is the author of this book?" Silence asked.
"I don't know; there were no clues left with the package," Yamada shook his head.
After pondering for a moment, Silence decided to accept this challenge. "I will investigate this, but you need to stay calm and not act rashly," she advised him.
The next morning, Silence began her investigation. She first visited the scenes of the unsolved mysteries that Yamada had mentioned, interviewing relevant individuals one by one in search of clues. However, these cases seemed shrouded in thick fog; neither the police nor the media had been able to uncover their truths.
Just as her investigation hit a deadlock, Silence received a mysterious package. Inside was an old photograph and a handwritten letter. The photo depicted a young woman with delicate features and eyes that radiated an indomitable spirit. The letter read: "To find the truth, start from her past."
Silence realized that the woman in the photograph was likely connected to the manuscript's author. She decided to trace this woman's identity. After considerable effort, she finally found an elderly painter who had been a friend of this woman during her lifetime; his name was Matsuo.
Upon seeing the photograph in Silence's hand, Matsuo's eyes widened in surprise. "This is Koharu; she was an exceptionally talented writer," he recalled. "But her life was filled with tragedy; she ultimately chose to take her own life."
"Suicide?" Silence keenly picked up on this crucial word. "Why did she choose to end her life?"
Matsuo sighed deeply and slowly recounted Koharu's past. It turned out that Koharu had once been a promising young author whose works often touched on society's darker sides, provoking discontent among certain individuals. In an unfortunate incident, she lost her closest friend under mysterious circumstances. This event dealt Koharu a tremendous blow; she began to doubt whether her writing could truly reveal the truth or if it would only bring more misfortune. Ultimately, in despair, she chose to end her own life.
