In the 1980s, in the Daxing'anling region, the trend of Tomb Raiding was not as rampant as in some other areas, but under the temptation of profit, many lawbreakers still took risks.
Wang Batian was a typical example; he ruled this area with an iron fist and a ruthless heart. Upon hearing that Zhang Qi and others were planning to enter an ancient tomb again, he began to entertain sinister thoughts.
He gathered a group of subordinates, all of whom were petty thieves and scoundrels, idling their days away while dreaming of easy gains.
In a tavern in the small town, they heard rumors about the ancient tomb and were seduced by Wang Batian's sweet words, fantasizing about becoming rich overnight.
Wang Batian led his men to infiltrate the tomb in advance, meticulously setting traps throughout the various passageways.
They utilized mechanisms they had learned from some old Tomb Raiders and combined them with the tomb's terrain to create deadly snares.
In one of the passageways, they cleverly modified the stone slabs on the ground, installing pressure-sensitive devices that would trigger traps if anyone stepped on them carelessly.
One of his subordinates, small in stature but with cunning eyes, muttered while setting up a trap, "Boss, these traps are so powerful; they’re definitely going to be doomed."
Wang Batian sneered, "Hmph, all the treasures in this tomb are mine; no one can snatch them from me."
The group raced down the left passageway, thinking they could temporarily shake off the bats, unaware that a greater crisis was quietly approaching.
Lao Hu ran ahead, his weathered face filled with vigilance.
Years of experience wandering through mountains and ancient ruins had given him an instinctive sense of danger.
As he ran, he kept an eye on his surroundings, his steps becoming cautious. His old military coat billowed in the wind as he moved, and his hunting rifle bounced against his back with each stride.
Suddenly, Lao Hu seemed to step on something; his expression changed instantly as he halted and shouted loudly, "Everyone stop moving! There might be traps here!"
The sudden shout startled everyone; they quickly came to a halt as a tense atmosphere spread among them.
Lao Hu crouched down, his eyes fixed on the ground. He noticed some subtle gaps that seemed to emanate a chilling aura.
He pulled a small dagger from his pocket and gently inserted it into the soil beside the gap, cautiously probing the surroundings.
At that moment, Xiao Douzi, filled with curiosity and anxiety, couldn't help but take a small step forward. This tiny movement triggered a chain reaction.
With a sudden "crack," the ground began to tremble, and a massive pit appeared in the once even tomb passage. The pit was filled with sharp wooden stakes glinting ominously; falling in would surely leave one riddled with wounds.
Xiao Douzi screamed in terror as he lost his balance and slid toward the edge of the pit.
Zhang Qi's heart leaped into his throat. He shouted, "Xiao Douzi!"
In one swift motion, he dashed forward, grabbing Xiao Douzi's arm and pulling him back with all his strength.
Once pulled back, Xiao Douzi collapsed onto the ground, pale and filled with fear.
"Oh my gosh, you scared me to death! I... I didn't mean to," Xiao Douzi said, his voice trembling.
Lao Hu stood up, wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, and cursed, "That damn Wang Batian must be behind this! Setting so many treacherous traps in this tomb makes me want to drag him out right now."
Zhang Qi gritted his teeth and replied, "Once we find him, we won't let him off easily. But for now, we need to figure out how to get past these mechanisms. Everyone be careful; no more reckless moves."
Professor Li observed the pit with lingering fear and remarked, "The design of this trap is exceptionally intricate. Judging by the depth of the pit and the arrangement of the stakes, the builder had a profound understanding of mechanics and engineering. This further proves how advanced the ancient civilization behind this tomb was."
A Ling furrowed her brow and said, "Let's not dwell on that for now, Professor. We need to find a safe way out quickly; this place isn't suitable for lingering. Who knows how many more traps are waiting for us?"
At that moment, Lao Hu took a long rope from his backpack, tied one end to a sturdy-looking rock nearby, and tossed the other end across to the opposite side of the pit.
He pulled hard on the rope to ensure it was secure, then said to everyone, "We can climb across using this rope, but we need to be careful."
Zhang Qi nodded. He tightly strapped the monkey to his back, grasped the rope, and began to slowly climb toward the other side.
His arms ached with each pull due to the earlier scratches from the bats, but he gritted his teeth and moved forward step by step.
A Ling followed behind, clutching a talisman in her hand, murmuring incantations as if praying for everyone's safety. Professor Li and Xiao Wang, with Lao Hu's help, cautiously climbed up the rope as well.
Just as they were about to reach the other side, a strange noise suddenly emanated from the pit below, like some massive mechanical device was in operation.
Lao Hu's expression changed, and he shouted, "Not good! This mechanism might have more tricks up its sleeve. Everyone, hurry!"
Before he finished speaking, they saw wooden stakes in the pit slowly rising and tilting toward the direction of the rope.
If struck by the stakes, the consequences would be dire. Zhang Qi gritted his teeth and quickened his pace, ignoring the pain in his arms as he climbed with all his might.
A Ling also cast a lightness spell, making her body feel lighter as she swiftly moved along the rope.
Professor Li and Xiao Wang struggled a bit; their speed was slower. Lao Hu anxiously called out from behind, "Professor! Xiao Wang! Put in more effort!"
Just as the stakes were about to pierce Professor Li, Zhang Qi finally reached the other side. He quickly turned around, grabbed a long knife, and forcefully cut through the rising stake, saving Professor Li and Xiao Wang.
