A Ling reacted swiftly, sidestepping and pressing the talisman onto the hand. The talisman ignited instantly, releasing a pungent smoke. The hand struggled in the flames for a moment before retracting.
"What the hell is that thing?" Zhang Qi shouted in terror.
Lao Hu yelled back, "Forget about it, we need to find Xiao Douzi first." With that, he quickened his pace, and the others followed closely behind.
Unbeknownst to them, Wang Batian's gang was quietly trailing not far behind.
Wang Batian held a short knife in his hand, his eyes gleaming with greed and malice.
He whispered to his subordinates, "Let them wear each other out fighting those traps, then we strike. The treasure will be ours."
As Zhang Qi and the others ventured deeper into the narrow path, the surroundings grew increasingly eerie. Bones occasionally littered the ground, sending chills down their spines.
"How many people must have died in this ancient tomb?" Professor Li lamented.
A Ling frowned and replied, "These bones are likely those of the craftsmen who built the tomb or tomb raiders who came here; none of them made it out alive."
Suddenly, they heard a faint crying echoing through the silent passageway, sending shivers down their spines.
"Is that Xiao Douzi?" Zhang Qi's heart leaped with hope as he rushed toward the sound.
However, when they turned a corner, they found themselves in a massive burial chamber. In the center stood a gigantic stone coffin, and the crying was emanating from within it.
The group exchanged fearful glances, dread filling their hearts. But for the sake of finding Xiao Douzi, Zhang Qi steeled himself and approached the stone coffin.
Just as he was about to reach the stone coffin, he suddenly felt a sinking sensation beneath his feet and realized he had stepped on a trap.
"Oh no!" he exclaimed, trying to jump away, but it was already too late.
The ground around him began to slowly descend, revealing sharp wooden stakes that were poised to impale them.
In this critical moment, Lao Hu quickly threw his shield at Zhang Qi's feet and shouted, "Step on the shield and jump up!"
With the support of the shield, Zhang Qi made a desperate leap and escaped the trap.
Everyone let out a long sigh of relief.
The scene shifted to Xiao Douzi, who was desperately fleeing down a fork in the path. The ancient tomb in Daxing'anling was as cold and eerie as an ice cellar, and his small figure appeared particularly frail in the dimly lit passage, like a lost rabbit in a dark forest.
Behind him, Wang Batian's men were hot on his heels. The sound of their footsteps echoed like thunder in the silent space, making Xiao Douzi's ears nearly numb.
"Stop right there, you little brat!" shouted a fierce voice. It was Ergouzi, one of Wang Batian's subordinates, with a face full of flesh and eyes gleaming with menace.
Xiao Douzi was terrified but knew he couldn't be caught; one thought dominated his mind: run!
Using his small and agile body, he dodged left and right until he spotted a narrow gap nearby. Without thinking twice, he squeezed through it.
"This little brat can really run!" another subordinate, San Lengzi, panted as they struggled to catch up.
They fumbled at the gap for quite some time before finally managing to squeeze through.
Xiao Douzi took the opportunity to dart into a hidden corner. He was running so fast that he nearly slipped and fell.
At that moment, he noticed some strange objects by the roadside, covered in mysterious symbols.
Although Xiao Douzi didn’t understand the meaning of these symbols, he sensed they were unusual. He quickly picked up a small item that looked important and tucked it into his pocket.
“Big Brother, this path twists and turns; we can't lose him!” Ergouzi said anxiously.
“What are you afraid of? He's just a little kid; how far can he run?” San Lengzi replied defiantly, though he felt a bit uneasy inside.
As Xiao Douzi ran ahead, he suddenly spotted a fork in the path. His heart skipped a beat, and without thinking too much, he instinctively chose the left passage, hoping it would help him shake off his pursuers.
He murmured to himself as he ran, “Buddha bless me, let me get rid of these bad guys.”
Meanwhile, the pursuers were closing in behind him.
“Xiao Douzi, stop struggling! Come back with us quietly, or you'll regret it!” Ergouzi shouted from behind.
Gritting his teeth, Xiao Douzi quickened his pace. His calves felt like they had little motors attached to them. However, being so young, his stamina began to wane, and his steps slowed. But thinking about the consequences of being caught spurred him on as he continued to sprint through the eerie tomb passage.
Suddenly, he heard a strange noise ahead, as if something was moving slowly.
Xiao Douzi's heart raced to his throat. With no other choice and the pursuers almost upon him, he pushed forward bravely.
When he finally saw what lay ahead, he gasped in shock. A swarm of large, fat rats scurried past his feet, their eyes glinting eerily in the darkness. Xiao Douzi was so frightened that he nearly cried out but quickly covered his mouth and cautiously maneuvered around the mass of rats before continuing to run forward while his pursuers relentlessly chased after him.
Xiao Douzi rushed into a tomb chamber in a panic, the air thick with a pungent odor. The walls glimmered with a ghostly green phosphorescence, casting an eerie light throughout the room.
He looked around in terror, noticing some worn pottery and bronze artifacts scattered about, while a few skeletal remains in the corner seemed to tell tales of past horrors.
"What kind of place is this?" Xiao Douzi muttered to himself, his voice trembling.
Desperate to hide, he dashed behind a large pottery piece. Just as he settled in, Ergouzi and San Lengzi burst in after him.
"Where is he? Where did that little brat go?" Ergouzi exclaimed, his eyes wide as he searched frantically.
"Big Brother, could he be behind those things?" San Lengzi suggested, pointing at the pottery.
The two slowly approached the pottery, while Xiao Douzi held his breath, his heart racing wildly in his chest as if it might leap out at any moment.
Just as they were about to reach the pottery, Xiao Douzi spotted a small opening nearby. Seizing the opportunity, he sprang out from behind the pottery like a nimble little monkey and dashed toward the hole.
"There! Don't let him get away!" Ergouzi shouted, and both of them hurried after him.
Xiao Douzi squeezed into the opening and found himself in a narrow passageway that could only accommodate one person at a time.
He pushed forward with all his might, scraping his clothes against the jagged stones of the walls and cutting his skin. But he couldn't afford to feel the pain; all that filled his mind was one thought: escape from these bad people.
