She had always thought that someone like Yao Zhandong, with his nouveau riche demeanor, would only have friends of the same ilk.
But the man before her, dressed in a shirt and casually leaning back in his chair, had his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing a strip of lean skin. His clear features seemed to stand in stark contrast to the raucous atmosphere surrounding him.
From this angle, she could see the subtle movement of his Adam's apple and the smooth line of his jaw. For the first time, she felt that the term "unworldly" could indeed apply to a man.
As the drinks flowed and others grew increasingly animated, shouting and blushing as they began to drink and play games, Yao Nian sat stiffly. When Yao Zhandong had brought her over earlier, she had only managed to eat half a shrimp; now, it had long been digested.
She stared longingly at the curry crab fried rice in the distance, silently waiting for the slowly moving rotating platter to bring it closer to her. Just as victory seemed imminent, she had just picked up her chopsticks when the platter spun at a visible speed, causing her to watch in dismay as the bowl of fried rice that was about to reach her slipped away again.
Frustrated, she set her chopsticks down.
"Shen Du!"
Yao Zhandong pointed at the bottle of mineral water in the man's hand and complained, "What are you drinking? You’re not giving me any face!"
So his name was Shen Du; Yao Nian silently repeated it in her mind.
Shen Du smiled and pushed the rotating platter back in response. "Yao Zong, I do have something on tonight. I’ll make it up to you next time."
As soon as he finished speaking, that bowl of crab meat fried rice returned right in front of Yao Nian again.
"Is this for me?"
Yao Nian tilted her head, taking two seconds to realize Shen Du was speaking to her. Before she could respond, he reached over and took a bowl from her table, serving two generous scoops of fried rice right in front of her.
The rice glistened with a golden hue, and the crab meat sizzled enticingly.
Looking at the mound of fried rice before her and recalling how he had seen all her little movements just moments ago made her feel a bit embarrassed. She hurriedly expressed her thanks.
Seemingly noticing her discomfort, Shen Du struck up a conversation after she finished the bowl of crab yellow fried rice.
"Hua University is a great school. Why did you choose to study law?"
Yao Nian paused for a moment before answering honestly. "I can't do linguistics, I'm not interested in philosophy, journalism is dull, and my math skills are too poor for business management. So law was all that was left."
Shen Du chuckled in surprise.
She turned to ask, "Are you a friend of my father's?"
"Sort of," Shen Du replied, opening a bottle of mineral water and taking a sip. "Don't I look like one?"
Yao Nian silently glanced at the others, who were flushed and engaged in a heated discussion, and swallowed back the thought that he seemed to be the only normal one among them.
Shen Du was not very talkative, giving off an impression of good upbringing. Besides occasionally helping Yao Nian reach for dishes she couldn't access, he spent most of the time quietly listening, a faint smile always gracing his face.
In this long and tedious banquet, Yao Nian was surprised to find that she didn't feel it was unbearable; instead, she wished time could slow down even more.
Just past nine in the evening, guests on the first floor began to disperse one after another, and Yao Nian's graduation banquet came to a perfect close amidst Yao Zhandong's retching sounds.
For Yao Zhandong, however, the nightlife was just beginning at this hour.
He had always maintained a policy of not returning home before dawn, something Yao Nian had long since grown accustomed to as she stepped out of the Hyatt alone.
As the city lights began to twinkle, the streets were vibrant with nightlife, and rows of bronze streetlights cast a warm glow.
The girl squatted in front of a landscaped area, her eyes fixated on a red-shelled beetle on the leaves, completely unaware that the hem of her skirt had gotten dirty.
Suddenly, a blinding beam of light shone on Yao Nian. Instinctively, she raised her hand to shield her eyes and squinted toward the source of the light.
